San Diego County residents can expect higher water costs in 2027 after the San Diego County Water Authority approved a 3% wholesale water rate increase.
The agency says the increase is needed to cover operating costs, maintain infrastructure, and meet long-term financial goals. Officials state the 3% increase is lower than earlier proposed 6% increase and remains below the national inflation rate.
According to the Water Authority, the lower increase was made possible through two new water transfer agreements with agencies outside San Diego County. These partnerships are expected to generate additional revenue, helping offset costs and reduce the need for larger rate increases.
This approved increase applies to wholesale water rates and will impact individuals and businesses differently depending on how each agency passes along the increased costs to customers.
The Water Authority also indicated that similar annual 3% rate increases are anticipated through 2032 as it continues to address rising costs for energy, construction, and other essential operations.
For consumers, this means water bills are likely to continue rising in the coming years, although at a more moderate pace than previously expected. Local water agencies will now determine how the wholesale increase affects rates for their customers.
