There’s a misleading flyer being mailed to SDG&E customers. The flyer warns that electricity rates could rise by 37% for people who do not sign up for a Virtual Power Plant program. While this is a legitimate program and looks like an official SDG&E notice, SDG&E says it has nothing to do with it.

The flyer promotes solar panels and battery systems and encourages homeowners to participate in a program that can allow stored energy to be shared with the electric grid.

UCAN’s Executive Director Edward Lopez has looked into this flyer and finds the flyer gives customers a misleading impression. Some of the federal incentives mentioned in the flyer are no longer available to everyone. He also questions the claim that customers could face a 37% rate increase and doesn’t know where that number came from.

UCAN urges customers to research utility-related mailers and verifying claims before making decisions about solar, batteries, or electricity programs.
