Wireless Phone Early Termination Fees (ETFs)

Early Termination Fees or ETFs remain consumers biggest complaints. ETFs only apply if you are under a contract with the company. Here is a list of the current wireless phone ETF fees.

  Advanced Devices Standard Devices
AT&T Mobility $325 per line minus $10 per month for each month of service $150 per line minus $4 per month for month of service
Sprint Nextel $200 per line for first 4 months then minus $10 per month for each month of service but at no time less than $50 $200 per line for first 4 months then minus $10 per month for each month of service but at no time less than $50
T-Mobile USA $200 $200
Verizon Wireless $350 per line minus $10 per month for each month of service $175 per line minus $5 per month for each month of service

Click on a company's name to see the details of their ETF policy. If you purchase your wireless device from a kiosk or other authorized dealer there may be an additional cancellation fee. Remember you can avoid ETFs altogether by paying full price for a wireless device and not entering into a contract. And in California each of the carriers provides a 30 day trial period when you sign up for new service that you can cancel without incurring an ETF, though you may incur some charges related to returning the phone.

If you have a question or complaint about ETFs contact UCAN's fraud squad via our telecom complaint form.

Boo hoo

Lol...you all crack me up.

If you have to pay for unlimited minutes, you are mad at the company. If your on an old plan that costs more than the current plans and you don't proactively get a new plan, your mad at the company. If you don't choose unlimited minutes or pay attention to what you are using and go over your minutes, you are mad at the company. If you live in a good area but decide to move and its not the same, your mad at the company. If you cant get your phone to work with your wifi connection, your mad at the company. If your phone that is not made by your cell phone provider isn't working, your mad at the company.

Grow up and have a great holiday weekend!

AT&T problems

I had no problem with Cingular, but since it became A&T I've had nothing but problems. I foolishly used my upgrade to purchase a Motorola Flipside in January at a mall kiosk. I brought it back twice the first week because I wasn't happy with its performance, and they never offered to take it back even though I was still within the remorse period (as I learned after the fact). It never worked perfectly but it was good enough until March, when I turned it off to attend a play and was unable to get it to turn back on. I spent the next week on various fool's errands trying to return the phone (which they wouldn't take because it was just outside 60 days), driving a 40-mile round trip to an equipment center that said it was broken but not broken enough for me to use the insurance I had bought to replace it (!), screaming at some billing d.epartment idiot who kept trying to tell me that I should have taken it back within the remorse period (he then tried to say the reason they didn't take it back was that it was broken). I wrote them a letter saying the least they could do is give me a faster upgrade. My next upgrade isn't due until Sept. 2012! They did give me a month's free service.

While the phone was out of commission I ended up buying a go-phone I didn't need, and finally I went back to my old phone and shipped the Flipside back to motorola. They sent it back and say it is repaired.
I hadn't tried it because when I reactivated my old phone, the guy at AT&T said he took me off the data plan, so I was figured I would have to take the phone to an AT&T store to get back on the data plan.
Today I get a bill that appears as though they charged me for THREE phones -- the regular non-smart phone I've been using, and TWO data plans for the Flipside I haven't used in over a month. There's also another $3 charge for something I didn't sign up for. I tried calling AT&T to question the bill and got stymied by a guy who asked for my security code. I couldn't remember it but had already given him my phone number, my name, my ZIP code. He said it didn't matter, he couldn't do anything without the code. I said I didn't have it and he said I'd have to go to an AT&T store to change it. I did try to change it on the AT&T website but even though it tells me I've successfully changed the code, it then refuses to recognize the new code.
On top of all this, I discovered tonight that I never signed the contract for service for the Flipside. Think I need a lawyer?

do i have to return the phone if the contract is over?

if i have a contract with verizon for my htc thunderbolt, after 2 years do i have to return the phone if i dont want to continue with verizon?

No, the phone is yours,

No, the phone is yours, especially after your contract.

ATT & Verizon Vs. Metro & Straight Talk

I have had at&t for almost 2 years now and my girlfriend is going on 3 with Verizon. I started out with a regular bill around 50 dollars a month as agreed with 450 minutes 1000 texts and unlimited internet. about 13 months into my contract i went over for the first time on my minutes and texts. My local at&t store associate gladly helped me out and took the 170 dollar overages down to about 25 extra dollars by backdating the type of plan I had (he changed my plan to an unlimited plan for the month prior). I then decided to keep the unlimited plan averaging 85 dollars or so. When I added unlimited texting and internet my bill became 112 dollars a month. Enough for 3 unlimited lines with metro. Though I had a decent amount of work coming in so this was ok with me. 6 months later, this month, my bill is 137 something.

If you think that is bad, wait, because starting the next month after I upgraded my plan to full unlimited, my bill was 275 dollars. Not to mention, I had previously paid for several months in advance, dropping a couple hundred dollars at my local att store. I only found out about the amount owed because att shut my phone off when I was in Miami (out of town). I had to pay 300 dollars to turn it back on. The following month my bill was 250 dollars again, and ever since I have paid 170, 145, 160 and so on until this month. I am over it.

My girlfriends bill was 535 dollars last month for Verizon. This woke me up. One month of service, 535 dollars, with only 325 dollars in overages talking to me. Explain, the extra 210 dollars Verizon, because I don't know a single plan that cost that much (besides 3 or 4 line family plans, unlimited I might add). Her plan is a measly 600 minutes a month with 9.95 data added and unlimited text. It should be 110 or so like mine. Never is. So for us to transfer phone companies to a reasonable unlimited plan with metro or straight talk, it will cost us 535 + 200 for her cancellation fee 130 + 75 for my cancellation fee which is $940. Oh and we would have to buy new phones and pay for the unlimited plans so add another 100-200 for that.......

Today, I spent an hour or two on the phone with some lady who knew all the answers. Ha! She only apoligized 110 times! Then took 10 dollars off my bill. Ha! So as she explained how in those previous months I was paying for my service in advance, like rent she said, I thought to myself, that would be a good explanation if I hadnt looked online for the first time last night at my previous 18 months in bills. I noticed that my bill cycle is from the 2nd of every month to the 1st of the following month, and I dont pay for that bill cycle until the 24th of that following month. So, God, please tell this woman how I could duck out of 2 months in phone service on the 30th when they shut my phone off.

I explained that I knew how the plans worked, over and over, she repeated that I was paying in advance and that was why my previous couple bills were 300 dollars. What a quack.

I cant believe at&t has even lasted this long. I've paid about 1500 dollars in the past year for one line, averaging 125 per month. And half of the months I didn't have an unlimited plan! That is enough money, to pay an unlimited metro phone up for 5 YEARS!!!!

How Does AT&T Stay In Business ?

Basically by cheating people like you and me.
I received a letter from AT&T telling me that my one and a half year old phone phone (Blackberry Curve)
would no longer work on the AT&T network after May 15 2011. I needed a new Blackberry 3g phone.
The letter said free and I would not have to change my plan. Well, that wasn't the case. They wanted $174.00
for the phone and I would lose half my minutes, 7PM minutes, 9.99 second line, plus pay 60% more.
I'm dumping AT&T for sure. Their service was always bad anyway and customer service even worse.
Just going to let them cut off my service on May 15, but I will not pay early termination fees since they
terminated my service.
Looking a Sprint's unlimited plan. Same price as what AT&T wants to charge me for my new crappy phone.
Plus Sprint gives you a free Blackberry 3G (or for $1.00) with that plan.

Stay away from contracts....

A phone contract is definitely something that you should not make a hastily decision about. I could write volumes on the nightmares I've experienced with AT&T and Verizon. Hidden charges and fees, horrible customer service, shotty reception in many places, and many dropped calls. I recommend that anyone who is truly thinking about getting a cell phone, stick with a prepaid no strings attached plan. 2 years is a long time and a lot of things can go wrong financially.

Phone contracts are not needed at all

I do not have a contract, and never have. I used Metro PCS which worked fine across the whole united states. Now I have BOOST. Both are prepaid. NO CONTRACTS.
No maximum minutes. No nothing. There are others out there like these---no contracts, no roaming, etcetera.

with Boost I pay $35 a month and METRO PCS is also $35. I think Virgin Mobile is similiar. Reception on all three is great. Why would anyone have a contract these days? Boost kisses my A and is real friendly to me.

No need for Contracts

You're right. I had T Mobile for 10 years. Paying their high bills and the Fed's taxes every month. Now, I have Virgin Mobile. I get unlimited internet, email, text and voice for $60.00 a month + county tax ONLY. The taxes for contracted companies are nearly one third the cost of your bill. I was paying $130.00 a month for just unlimited voice calls, no internet, text and email. Text was another $5.00 a month. Virgin Mobile has plans for $30.00 a month, that includes 1500 minutes talk, 500 text messages, and 10 Megabytes internet. You can't go wrong with these plans. I live in a remote area in Florida and the reception is superb. Virgin uses the same towers as Sprint. If you can use Sprint coverage, then you're good to go with Virgin Mobile.

T-Mobile and unidentified charges

So my wife has been in a contract for 7 years with no problems with T-mobile other than the little fees that seem to pop out of nowhere but we don't complain about those because we are otherwise happy with the service.

Then, we get the mail on Fri and lo and behold there is a 386.00 charge from a call that says we received at 1am in the morning, and since I am with her, I know the call did not come in. in any case the bill is always well under 60.00 so we look at the number and cannot ID it.

So we called T-Mobile and spoke to Elizabeth (heavy accented) she just repeated again and again that she would not remove the charge, so I (frustrated) at this point said fine, cancel the service.

We are done with T-Mobile. And damn our credit history - I will not pay them a dime !

phone upgrade and getting out of contract

I called Verizon to get out of contract. They stated my cancellation fee is greater then what I calculated because they are counting a phone upgrade my son did on my line, but his number adding 60 dollars to the fee. He eventually assumed financial responsibility of the line and terminated my 3rd and 4th line from my account. It seems to me that I'm paying twice for a upgraDE THAT APPLIED TO A DIFFERENT LINE AND THAT THEY'VE ALREADY BEEN PAID WHEN MY SON TURNED AROUND AND CHANGED TO at&T. dOES THIS MAke sense?

cell phone acting up

I think that verizon is sending bugs to my phone. The reason for this thought is that about a month before my contract ends, my phone started acting up. After I discover that something was wrong with the phone, I called verizon to see what was going on with my phone. I did not remember the actual renewal date for my contract, but as soon as I cleared their security screening, and I stated the reason for my calling, their next response was "your contract is eligible for an upgrade." So I said that is why my phone started acting funny, so I was told "maybe."
However, I do not like the idea of this feeling that verizon is hijacking my phone because they wants me to renew my contract, so I bought a new phone from some where else, and the exact same "LG Env". After getting the new phone, I checked it and double checked it to to see if it was working correctly, and it was. Therefore, I proceed to activate it, but after I activated the phone the exact same thing started happening to the new phone the "0, #, OK" key stop working, sometimes it dropped my calls, and chipped in and out like someone is tapping into my conversation, the same thing that was happening to the old phone which I have had for over 2 years.
Now I am not even thinking about renewing my contract, because my wife phone started acting up too which is also up for renewal.

Droid won't work where I'm going; can I cancel?

I am moving to a remote island where there is no wireless. Have the visa for proof. Can I cancel my Verizon contract under those terms?

were being railroaded by verizon

My wife and I recently terminated our service with our carrier. Namely verizon. When we both received our bills. We had a $200.00 ETF on them. Now we were formerly with altell and our accounts transfer to verizon after altell sold out. I called verizon to figure out why we were being charged the full $200 and not a reduced amount either through our old altell contract or through verizons standard contract. The representative could not give me a straight answer so I asked to have a supervisor call me. It has been 2 weeks and naturally I haven't heard anything from them. Can you tell me what altells ETF was and maybe give me some advise as to how we should pursue this.

Poor Coverage with t-mobile

I recently moved and have poor coverage (1 bar max) I can barely make or receive calls, and when I do, they get dropped 90% of the time. What are my options? T-mobile's "loyalty specialist" told me they do not guarantee coverage in buildings (a house) and that I'd have to pay an EFT if I want out.

U HAVE A EASY FIX

Hi,
U can get wifi calling enabled if your phone is capable of using wifi. it may add $10 to your monthly bill, but u get good voice clarity and save lot of minutes.
Alternatively, you can transfer your service to any of your friends or thru craigslist(It will work out cheaper than ETF)

Regards,
Jay

WiFi

WiFi doesn't work. Save your money. That's the 'solution' T-mobile gave us. We have a total of five phones. Only 2 have WiFi. We have tried this for 6 months now and there has been no change. They say we have a good signal. How would they know?!?! Funny that we also have one person with an AT&T phone which gets great reception (no wifi).

Try another company

If the end of my 2 year agreement is up in Sept. and I (and 4 other users) are on the family plan, can I just "secede" from AT & T family plan and try another company? OR am I locked in?

thanks.

Canceling Contract

When your 2-yr agreement expires you should be able to cancel your line out of the family plan. Coordinate your cancellation with the Primary Account Holder as they may be needed to ensure your line is canceled. If you are the account holder you may need to designate a new primary line for the account. If you have any problems trying to cancel after your contract is up, file an online complaint with the UCAN Fraud Squad we may be able to help.
