How AT&T "Free Trial" of XM Radio, MobiTV, MySpace Mobile, etc... could cost you thousands and how to cancel or unsubscribe

UCAN News

These services could cost you thousands... please post your experiences with them below.

XM Radio, MobiTV, MobiRadio, MobiVJ, Pandora, MySpace Mobile, Fantasy Sports Edge, MLB Gameday with Audio, InStyle Magazine, Univision Movil, Hip Hop Official by GoTV, GoTV Alt Rock, Music ID, Mobilcast, Wayfinder Navigator 6.

All of these services and more are available through your AT&T (Cingular) phone. The problem is that these services use a lot of data and can cost a lot if you do not have an Unlimited Data Plan. But you can still sign up for these services using your phone with a Pay As You Go Data Plan and right now many of these services are claiming FREE TRIAL, with little mention from AT&T (Cingular) of the data charges you incur using these services, which can easily exceed THOUSANDS of dollars in a billing period. So use care with these service, occasionally check your Account Balance, and here is a tip, we could not find on AT&T's (Cingular's) website or when using these services:

Never signed up, and couldn't cancel!

When I bought a new car with XM capability, I was - without my knowledge - given a 3-month free trial of XM radio. After three months, I received a very aggressive sales call asking me if I wished to sign up for continued service. The salesman didn't want to take NO for an answer, but I persisted in declining service. Then the bills started coming. I called XM customer service multiple times to cancel the service I had *never* signed up for, but the bills kept coming with no record of my cancellations. After months and months and several phone calls, the cancellation finally 'took hold' and I have received no further bills.

Here is the response i

Here is the response i received after trying to access my online account with AT&T. I received warnings from my Norton, as well as I.E. security programs about this site. Since I have had mysterious charges on my bill, that AT&T is trying to get me to claim as mine, with no explanantion of what they are, I do wonder if this is part of the problem. The security for the page has still not been updated. I sent an email to them 2 days ago regarding this problem. AT&T is telling me that this is, "just were we have not updated or security certificate". I do not like the thought of everyones information in this site, and an expired security certificate. To use the word "just", as if this is a minor detail, and its okay to do this, really makes me think twice about this company. Maybe its not such a big deal to them, but to the ones who have account information online with them, it is a very big deal. And, they had no mention of dealing with the problem.

Thank you for taking the time to e-mail AT&T regarding your comment that
you are receiving a message that the security certificate is invalid or
possible fraudulent activity. You did attempt to change your password
word, but you were unsuccesful. I am happy to help you with your
inquiry.
Upon review of your account and our applications, I find that there has
been no attempt to access your online account. The notification that
you are receiving about the security certificate is just where we have
not yet updated the certificate. If you would like to change the

Re:

File a complaint with the BBB, the State Attorney General's office and the FCC (Federal Communications Commision) at www.fcc.com. You can even call them directly and explain the issue. If you didn't make the charges you shouldn't have to pay period and the fact that you called them and attempted to rectify the situation and was told there was nothing they could do is outrageous. The fact that they are suggesting an option of adding more money to your monthly bill by purchasing something that you don't use is even more outrageous!! It can't hurt to file a complaint at least to get some of these charges reduced. Also thats why I have been an ATT gophone customer for about 8 years and counting now. I will never get locked into a contract with any of these companies. My phone bill is not that bad and I even have access to all the other features that regular customers have access to.

By the way my unlimited internet usage is only $19.99 not $50.00. You really should file a complaint with the FCC.

AT&T Data charge

balikitty's picture

Hello!
I have been with AT&T over 4 years now. (formerly cingular) In those years i have never accessed the internet, although my phone was capable to do so with the touch of a button. I purchased a new phone January 20, 2008. Since then, I have went from a $176.00 phone bill, for 3 lines, to $500.00 and the second bill was $1,055.00! I did pay all the charges on the 1st bill, except for the "useage charges". When i spoke with CSR, he was shocked to find out I had a regular cell phone, instead of a PDA. He mentioned that for someone to actually use this many Kb, I would have to have a PDA, and no monthly net package. Im sure he was not supposed to do this, but he could not contain himself.
My bill was submitted for credit, this is the most the CSR could do for me. And, the credit was turned down. I was told i could not block the internet, AT&T could not do this. (which may be true) I am afraid of my own phone right now. I have not downloaded, bought, played, emailed, searched the web, nothing. I do use text messaging, $20.00/month, unlimited. I make sure i do not go past the limit of sms for my text messaging. If my text message is lengthy, i simply send one, and make a seperate 2nd message, as i do not want to take the chance for more charges. I have done absolutely nothing to access the net by phone. I am not paying this bill, I did not do this, and will not pay this amount to keep them happy. Besides, after that, the charges may continue. I have no idea if the new phone is malfunctioning, this all started after i purchased my latest phone. AT&T CSR, "Corey" did look back at my bills and saw that for 4 years, there has been no access to the net, and yes, of course like any other cell phone, i could access the net.
The supervisor that i spoke with briefly during this phone call, recommended to me that i sign up for internet service so if anymore charges came through, it would be $50.00, instead of $900.00. I refused, stating that, " I do not use the internet on my phone, and this would be useless to have". I have read over many posts of AT&T overcharging, and doing other unpleasant things with customers. This is completely a false charge to my bill. I have made sure the phone is not somehow "stuck" on the internet, it is not. The CSR told me also, that if my phone actually was stuck in the mode, the charges would stop after the page downloaded. I have no clue as to where to go from here. This is the only contact so far. I do believe being nice can get you farther. If that attempt fails, im sure my mood will change. Please offer any help, any links, anything that may help me with this problem, it is completely unfair and i am not paying this. I dont want my credit ruined over this bill, but there is no way im paying them a free $1000.00, only to have to give more next month.
I have noticed one thing that may or may not be the problem. In my phones settings, in the details. there is a different cell number set. One that ive never had. My number is supposed to be in this information, but it is not. The person that sold me the phone, (from AT&T) programmed this number into my phone. I dont know if this is the problem, I imagined it was not, but this is the only flaw ive found so far.
Any info or past experiences would be appreciated, as this is worried me day and night due to my credit rating on the line.
Thanks much for any input!
