Former PUC Commissioner Chong now employed by industry

In a move surprising to no one, Rachelle Chong has a new position and this time it is with the very people that seemed as if they were employing her all along, the industry.

Verizon's Feeling Growing Pains - LTE network outage affects customers

It looks like Verizon’s golden child, its new LTE network, is feeling some growing pains during its formative years. According to posts by Fierce Wireless and Engadet--and confirmed by a post on Verizon’s Twitter account--Verizon’s LTE network went down on Tuesday evening. Little information has been released as to the cause of the outage, but it could be seen as a big blow to Verizon’s growing LTE network.

Verizon eliminates ETFs on DSL bundles; other ETFs may apply

Verizon just announced in a press release that it is simplifying itsr DSL bundles and eliminating ETFs on their services.  Great!  No ETF!  Except there’s still an ETF.  Yes, you’ll still need to sign a two-year contract with DirecTV and you’re still liable to pay their early termination fee.  Of course, you can always go with their FiOS option to avoid a contract, but you’ll be paying about 50% more for that.

AT&T Releases First Prepaid Android Phone - is that the sound of crickets?

Chrip chirp chirp. Is that the sound of spring birds stretching their wings for a morning flight? Or is it the sound of crickets in response to AT&T’s announcement of its first prepaid Android phone? Engadget posted yesterday that, along with a new prepaid data plan, the wireless behemoth is dropping the LG Thrive on prepaid customers this Sunday, April 17. I guess crickets are a bit harsh, but let’s dive into what AT&T has to offer and compare it to another prepaid carrier that has had an Android handset available for prepaid service: Cricket Wireless.

Robocalls - ruining your R&R one call at a time

After a long day, there are few things better than sinking into a comfy chair and relaxing with some soothing music. But before you can hit play on the music player of your choice, your cell phone starts playing the theme song to Air Wolf (doesn’t everyone have that as their ring tone?) You glance at the caller ID, which is a strange number. Thinking it may be important, you answer the phone, only to discover it’s a terminator! Well, not quite. It’s a machine of another sort--a robocall.

CTIA confirms that by 2012 all cell phones will have a common charging port

Hey, can I borrow your phone charger?  No, I have a Motorola.  Wait, maybe that one will work.  Let me try plugging it in to my phone … err, maybe it’s upside down … oh crap, was that little metal prong important?

I don’t know about you, but I have enough random phone chargers by now to open up my own storefront.  Apparently I’m not alone.  Today CTIA Chairman/Sprint CEO Dan Hesse announced that by January 2012, all U.S. cell phones will all have a common microUSB port.  Finally, the holy grail has arrived: I can own one phone charger that’s compatible with all cell phones.

Free or not to free? AT&T's free month of iPad data service not a great deal

Throughout the blogosphere, news has been circulating of AT&T offering a free month of its 2GB data plan for iPads old and new. Apparently, AT&T has been e-mailing its customers to notify them of the offer. Reluctantly, I am an AT&T customer because when I received my iPad there was only an AT&T model available. While I didn’t receive AT&T’s e-mail, I did see the story pop on various blogs and I thought I’d give it a shot.
