Prepaid Calling Cards

There is a multitude of calling card companies in the marketplace these days, so be careful.
There are also some good deals out there if you know what to look for.

Things to consider

Hidden charges: billing increments, minimum call length, taxes and surcharges,
connection fees etc. 2.9¢ a minute might seem like a good deal, but if there is a connection charge of 99¢ for each call and a Universal Service Fund charge of $1 for the first call on a $10 calling card, your savings are diminished. Be a smart consumer and shop around for the best rate.

Quality of Service: A company may offer great rates, but also offer a terrible
connection or no connection at all.

Expiration of card or service: Many cards expire within a certain time limit,
and many companies go bankrupt. The calling card market is extremely volatile
so be careful of what companies you use.

I will not buy these cards

I will not buy these cards again! i was very disapointed and felt ripped off by the company. I had bought two 5$ cards so i could make a quick call to my husband in mexico while he was visiting family. After activating the card and entering my pin. i had a total of 11 minutes to talk to him. I wanted to buy a 10 calling card but it had been expired so i had to just buy two 5 dollar ones. But i will say that i will never buy these cards again and i wanted to let everyone else know be careful if you buy these cards, but personally i thougth i was getting cheated out of my money

"Clear Connections" is a big FRAUD

CAUTION: Do NOT purchase Clear Connections. It's a BIG FRAUD.

I made a few calls to Taiwan. The advertized rate was 1.7 cents per min, plus 1.5 cents per min for using the access number. However, I was charged 7 cents per minute. My first $10's card was gone after 4 calls.

I called CC's customer service 888-805-9012 to complain more than 10 times. Each time I received the same response, 'I apologize for this error. am filing a complaint for you. Someone from the back office will contact you in 48 hours.' No one ever called me. I never recieve my refund.

I started using my second $10 card. This time it's worse. First, the rate has gone up to 2.9 cents per min. With 1.5 cents surcharge, it should be 4.4 cents per min. But I was charge 9 cents per minute.

Therefore, the pattern of charge seems twice as advertised.

I don't mind losing $10. But I will not buy their cards again. I will go back to Penny Talk.

Pincity appears to be closed

Since the second week of May 2009 or so, Pincity appears to be closed for business. I can still access its website, but all of the toll-free access numbers, including the company's main customer service line, all say they are "invalid."

The website says nothing, of course, and makes it look like everything is fine. But beware of this company--it appears to be another phone company that's gone bell up. Fortunately, I had only $9 on the books that now appears lost.

LAST DAY of Our Biggest Promotion!! Celeberating 10 Years!!?

I have found the problem of the access numbers, and the quality of the phone connection. Pincity.com was still promoting their 10 year anniversary on June 12, 2009. I refilled $35 in May and now it is all gone. Today, the phone lines and website are all down. Pincity was trying to get more money from the customers before closing the business. All I want to say is that Pincity is so fxxking cheap.

I am using pincity for last 5 years, and it never stopped working for me. I use it almost everyday calling Taiwan and the quality is always good, and they're one of the very few that doesn't expire your balance. They have that account protection thing that will lock your account if you don't use it for more than 6 months, but last time i just called their customer service and they had no problem activate my account again and I am able to use my $150+ balance right away. i think you shoud contact their customer service and you will get your balance back to use

Advertisements are NOT comments

I have now been alerted twice to a comment I made about the original post here. Both were advertisements for companies attempting to sell what seems to be VOIP (see dated entries Feb. 7th and March 1st above) rather than commenting on the original post or one of the comments to that post. Am I the only one who believes that these are not legitimate posts to these comments? Shouldn't there be another place for these posts. Perhaps something like "Advertisements" could be put on the home page. When it is clicked, one would get a choice to look at these under appropriate headings such as telecommunications, automobile service, etc. Just a suggestion.

Calling cards are not always the best deal

Calling cards are not always the best deal, as noted in the article above. One has to watch every little (or big) charge, the cards can, and do, expire with minutes remaining, and they can be quite time consuming to use because of long PINs that are almost impossible to memorize. Granted, the big telecoms are ripoffs but if you do some research you can find smaller companies that are excellent and may not cost much more than some calling cards. For example, the long distance company I use charges 4.8 cents a minute billed by the second (NOT by 6, 12, or 18 seconds or by the minute). That rate includes all of the United States (except California [3.4 cents] because I live there), Canada, Australia, New Zealand and a good part of western Europe as well as other places around the world. I call the U.K. a lot and this company saves me quite a bit of money. By setting up my cell phone as directed by this long distance carrier, my cell phone carrier only charges minutes used (free nights and weekends) and my long distance carrier still charges me the same 4.8 cents per minute for the calls I make to Scotland. I am not charged a monthly fee for making these international calls and if I were to make no long distance calls at all in a given month, I am charged nothing. Best of all, because this is my land line long distance carrier, I just pick up the phone and dial. No PINs, no unused minutes because of time constraints, no extra fees for international calls.
Is there a down side? Sure. I still prefer to pay my bills by check. However, this company accepts payment only by direct debit to a bank account or credit card and bills are furnished by e-mail or the internet. I thought a long time before deciding to go ahead. So far, after seven months, this company has exceeded my expectations. For my costs, the convenience of not having to hassle with a calling card PIN, the clear connections nationally, and mostly excellent connections to overseas numbers (still much much better than my last company or the telecom giant I had before that) it beats a calling card. Fortunately or unfortunately, the days of "set it and forget it" telephone service is over.

Prepaid Calling Card Alert

ALERT: If you push "SEND" while using a prepaid calling card with your cell phone, you will automatically activate the 3-way calling feature. If your second line is activated by mistake, that second line will be billed AT THE FULL BILLING RATE. The bottom line is if you push "SEND", the line with the prepaid calling card info will be charged correctly. The other line will activate and go to the same number you called and the billing will be at the maximum calling rate per minute. It will look like a massive billing error. BE CAREFUL.
