Consumer Watchdog adds new Board Members
San Diego, California – The Board of Directors of the Utility Consumers Action Network (UCAN) has added two new members, Pat Zaharopoulos, Esq. and Murtaza H. Baxamusa, Ph.D, AICP.
“Each brings a range of experience, professional competence and demonstrated commitment to the service of the public interest to UCAN. Their separate perspectives and backgrounds will augment those of the present board members.” said UCAN Board Chair Kendall Squires.
Zaharopoulos has more than 40 years’ experience working in the public sector for city, county and state government, most notably as a prosecutor for the State of California for more than 30 years. She also served as an adviser to San Diego’s mayor and city council, working for transparency in local government. She has argued eight cases in the California Supreme Court, and received the Attorney General's Award of Excellence. She has been named Public Lawyer of the Year by the San Diego Bar Association, was nominated twice for California District Attorneys Association Prosecutor of the Year and was a Department of Justice nominee for Women of Vision in the Law.
Dr. Baxamusa is the Director of Planning and Development for the Family Housing Corporation; and lectures in urban planning at the Sol Price School of Public Policy, University of Southern California. He is active in local advocacy for working families and serves on several boards. Both new members are founding members of the Middle Class Taxpayers Association, which is in formative stages as primarily a policy advocacy forum.
UCAN is a non-profit, public interest, advocacy organization that has been serving San Diego consumers for 30 years. It has a national reputation for utility rate advocacy, and focuses on energy, telecommunications and water.
