Scam Busters: Caller ID Spoofing

UCAN News

Scam Busters: Caller ID Spoofing has taken a front row seat again as portrayed by Bonnie Dempsey of the Main Street Press. Bonnie quotes UCAN's consumer advocate and "previous target of an attempted scam", Sue Macomber as stating that "government action is urgently needed and encourages people to urge their lawmakers to support related legislation."

Just so you know, I was "spoofed" by a Caller ID number from the Texas State Comptroller's Office telling me I needed to provide my bank account and social security number because I owed the State of Texas a great deal of money.  What made me suspicious was that I had resided in CA since the 1990's and therefore, what could I possibly owe the State of TX without receiving any billing statements or notices?  In addition, Texas has no state income tax.  Instead of using the number on my Caller ID to redial for verification, I went to the Internet and looked up the number using the actual area code of 512.  I called and was informed that no one called me from the State Comptroller's Office and I didn't owe a dime to TX.   I received a second call from another number that represented itself as Citibank and that they had a computer problem and lost data.  The caller stated that all of my personal information needed to be updated including full name, maiden name, mother's maiden name, phone numbers, social security #, and for whatever reason, my bank account # including routing #.  When I tried to ask a bunch of questions the "spoofer" hung up.

I told this reporter and Good Morning America that I can't understand why legislators are reluctant to vote on laws to prohibit this activity.  I also stated that "with the stalling of action, victims continue to be abused and stalkers tauntingly use this method of operation to commit their crimes."  The article points out that the most recent attempt to regulate this scam was initiated by Senator Bill Nelson in Florida.  "The Truth in Caller ID Act of 2009, which would ban the transmission of phony caller ID numbers, was referred to committee".

How do you get action?  Write your legislators and let them know there's no excuse to stall regulation on spoofing and get your neighbors to call and write as well.

Cloned Phone: How do you fight it

My 60 year old father's phone was cloned and we now have a $1100 phone bill that Verizon is trying really hard to get us to pay. I have explained a number of times that my father didn't make these charges but they claim that cell phone ESN numbers can't be cloned. I know that's a lie. My phone bill is proof of that.

Is there anyone out there who has advice on how to fight these rogue charges? I've contacted the FCC and the Attorney General. These companies know that cloning is huge and they are more than happy with letting their customers pay the bill. There must be something that we can do.

If you have information to share or have a similar issue, please send me a message on Twitter: @divagwendolyn. I refuse to not fight back and not let everyone know how Verizon treats its customers of 10+ years.

The more we find ways to

The more we find ways to evolve the more consumer fraud evolves and the wider it becomes. I suppose we all had to go through this at some point of our lives not knowing how to deal with it. So I am glad to see there are people actually involved in avoiding scams, it's supportive for all of us.

Cell phone spoofing and cloning

I know what it must look like to the observer when people talk about how their phones were 'spoofed' or 'cloned'. It sounds so far fetched and like a Twilight Zone episode and that it couldn't happen in real life. But I am living proof that this happens and it happens often. My son has been stalked and harassed by a crazy girl that has gone from simply texting threats and making hang up calls (and I'm not referring to one or two, but more like 50 or 60 text messages in a day) to no longer using her own phone, but using both of these methods. Most people say, 'why not change your number?' Good idea. He has changed his number 10 times. It doesn't matter. Others say 'why not get a restraining order on her?' Another good idea. We are in the process of doing so, however, it is not a simple thing to prove, which is of course, why she changed her MO. Did you know that when your phone is cloned, the calls that the cloned phone makes to a third party, show up on your bill so it looks as if YOU are the one that makes the calls? This psycho chick (PC), knowing we were gathering evidence to file for a restraining order, as well as criminal charges, began to target another innocent girl, trying to make it appear as if she, the innocent girl, was making the calls. It was really a simple thing to do once you understand the technology. PC cloned the innocent girl's cell and make a million calls and texts to my son. Then, those calls would show up on innocent girls phone bill and PC appears innocent. One question you may be asking is, 'how did PC know that we were in the midst of gathering evidence and filing for restraining order?' Answer: cloning a phone, and I believe spoofing as well, allows the guilty party to activate the victim phone's speaker and listen in on conversations that are going on, even while the victim phone is shut off! Before we caught on to this, we felt secure to talk in the privacy of our home and thus she was able to pick up on everything we were saying. And all of the phones in question are Verizon phones. Now Verizon refuses to acknowledge that their phones can be cloned, but they have a Cloning Department. Go figure. They say that phone bills and call logs cannot be manipulated. I have proof that they can. We have told them this for over a year, but they have chosen to stick their heads in the sand, afraid of what the bad publicity would do to them if this got out. Finally, one of the agents from Verizon, that was subpoened to be a witness for PC, began to listen and from what he's told me, an investigation has begun. We are considering a class action lawsuit against Verizon for allowing this to occur, especially after they have been told about this breech in security of their customers.
If anyone else out there has had these types of experiences, I would love to hear about it. I want to take this to the media, but no one seems interested. This type of thing is running rampant...... the public just doesn't know. And, I've also learned that any phone can be cloned and it takes less than 10 minutes to do it. ESN numbers? We have discovered that they are a cinch to get and that's all the cloner has to have to gain access to you and your cell!

I am actually filing charges

I am actually filing charges against a girl and her boyfriend who managed to use a caller ID spoofer off the internet to clone my number and leave offensive/ harrassing voicemails on my best friends phone. I plan on doing anything and everything to get these people and maybe even the phone companys in trouble.

I believe this has happened to me.

I just opened my latest T-Mobile bill to the tune of $270.00 when it is usually $70.00. My wife's line received 2 calls that showed up on caller Id and when she called them back, they had no idea who she is or why anyone called her from those numbers. One was a police dept. The other actually left a voice mail that sounded like a voice changer had been used, saying they were calling from a local gentlemen's club and that I had left my credit card. Two things were wrong with that. I don't go to those places. And, she is not on any of my cards. How did you deal with this? And, how do I go about proving that we did not make those calls?

i don't believe this story!!!!!

i read so many stories on this site but somehow i don't believe this story....sorry .. try another, i mean why these people are calling you why not me. i think you read somewhere that people can change their caller id so you decided to creat a drama about it.

Seriosly.just because the

Seriosly.just because the scamers didn't spesificly target you dosn't mean they aren't out there. My mom's phone number is being used for a scam.

I believe the story

I believe the story and think that most of the people using the spoof call are lowly small minded individuals that need to hide behind something cause they are just plain weak!!
They should ban call spoofing and make people stand up!! The sooner the better.
