Some grocery stores close the register on personal checks

When you next head to your local grocery store to buy greens you may need to first make sure that you have greenbacks, or plastic, with you as some grocery stores are no longer accepting personal checks for payment.

Fresh & Easy has a no-check policy and now Whole Foods is experimenting with a no check program at two of its stores in LA and Arizona.

When interviewed by Channel 8 News about the check policy, UCAN Executive Director Michael Shames said it will inconvenience some people.

Shames identified "seniors, minorities, and people who have been hard hit by the economic downturn who right now have lost their bank accounts, credit cards and are only able to transact business through cash or checks,"

Personal checks are fast becoming dinosaurs in Shames' view and the consumers who rely on them need to know that time is limited as more merchants move away from accepting them to simplify their business operations.

In San Diego, Vons, Albertsons, and Ralph's currently still accept personal checks.
