In 2009, John Mattes, who can currently works as the "Investigative Guy" helped develop the Community Journalism Pilot Project through UCAN's affiliate New Media Rights.  John was responsible for investigative reports that gave local citizen journalists and filmmakers the opportunity to "shadow" him and learn about investigative journalism as well as crafting videos for online distribution.

John began his career not as a journalist, but as a County Supervisor in Madison, Wisconsin. John then became an attorney and served as Investigative Counsel to the US Senate for the POWS.

Subsequent to his Senate work, John successfully sued the CIA and DOD on behalf of hundreds of covert agents left behind in Vietnam. At the same time, he served as an investigative consultant for ABC World News I-Team based in Miami.

After working as an investigator on ABC's Whitewater investigation, John stepped in front of the camera as an investigative reporter for the newly- launched TV station WAMI in Miami. His investigations included uncovering a multi-million dollar kickback scheme at Miami International Airport, legal loan sharking in the auto title loan business, and financial ties between a local mayor and organized crime.

From there, John traveled across the country to Los Angeles to become an investigative reporter for the nationally-syndicated Uncovered TV .

Since his arrival his San Diego, he has won 6 Emmys , A regional Morrow, a Golden Mike and numerous Press Club awards for his work exposing schemes and corruption.
