Gas prices poised to skyrocket
Today, gasoline prices in San Diego jumped 5¢ in 24 hours to a new all time-record high for the month of March of $2.935 a gallon for regular unleaded gasoline. Last Tuesday, gasoline cost 12¢ less.
Last year on this day, gasoline cost $2.57 a gallon. The price of oil on the NYMEX was $61.40 per barrel.
Today, NYMEX oil closed at $60.69 per barrel, an almost identical per barrel price, yet our gasoline costs 36¢ more today than it did a year ago.
Clearly, there is a serious disconnect between the price of gasoline and the price of oil. Last year, our prices were high because the industry was bending us over an oil barrel. This year, it is the refineries that are making us pay through the hose. At the root of the problem is the fact that just seven companies control 91.5% of all gasoline manufactured in the state of California.
What can consumers do?
1) Sign up for a free copy of UCAN's gasoline-saving guide (available to members and San Diego residents only)
2) Write your elected officials in the California Assembly and Senate. Let them know that this isn't a problem about a lack of refining capacity, rather it is a lack of competition that is pushing prices higher.
3) Use our Cheap Gas Locator at www.fueltracker.com
4) Consider joining UCAN. We are the only consumer group in San Diego that is passionately engaged in local energy issues.

Gas prices
How is it that our elected officilas allow this kind of price gouging to go on?
What happened to the price of gasoline during the most recent elections?
Dropped a good deal. Then began their slow rise soon after.
Who says the government cannot do anything about the price of gas?
It is clear that the oil companies are nothing more than profiteers and are praying upon our want and need for gasoline. Lining their pockets with our hard earned dollars and laughing at us all the while. Not to mention the record profits that they're raking in.
Our local leaders need to address this issue. Not just on a local level but on a national level as well. I refuse to buy my gasoline at any of the major gas suppliers :
SHELL- CHEVRON- EXXON- 76 - TEXACO
What would the effect be if a whole city stopped purchasing at the major suppliers and went to the smaller operators? I'm not talking for just 1 day. I'm talking for months.
Would the major suppliers take notice or would they stick it to the smaller guywith higher prices to pass along to the consumer?
I would bet they would hit the smaller guy and still force the public to pay the higher prices.
Government needs to step in just like it did during the elections and take the control we all know they have.
