Water Rate Increase 2007

The City of San Diego is committed to increasing water and sewer rates for the 2008 fiscal year. The current proposal leaves many questions to be answered regarding rate structure and the disproportionate increase of rates for some customer classes, while others receive reductions.

Rincon water rate increase protest form

Rincon in Escondido is also raising water rates. They say they have a protest form at rinconwater.org but I cannot find it there. Do you know where I can print out a protest form? Would you consider hosting it on your site?

Thank You,

Bruce

Water rate increase

The entire staff of UCAN and Executive Director Michael Shames respond---You are very welcome. We will continue to do our best to represent the ratepayers.

Good work on the water rate increase

I want to express my appreciation to the entire staff
of UCAN for their hard work relative to the City of San Diego's new
proposed sewer rate structure.
As a home owner in San Diego for 39 years, I too, questioned the continual
increase in years past by the City of San Diego to increase water rates to
improve our water infrastructure. Rates were always increased but we never
saw any major improvements for the dollars received.
Several months ago, the City admitted to using money from the water
department which was generated by the several years of increases.
Now, after your hard work, we as customers, will see our water bills get
some relief in our sewer charges.
Again, I appreciate your dedication for all of your hard work for the many
proposals you review in behalf of a citizen as myself.

water rates

Sirs:
Am I to understand the water dept. wants to raise rates 40% over the next 2 years?
That is an astronomical increase. Almost comical when you think about it. What can I do
about it? I am thinking of appearing before the city council with a raft of figures to undercut their position. Any thoughts?

Water Rates

It would seem to me that the first step would be to support the oversight/monitoring committee that would watch the administration and use of City water and sewer funds. The UCAN settlement found at www.sewerrefund.com would be worth reading. An oversight group would monitor the need and appropriations of funds, as well as make sure the City does NOT continue to undercharge commercial customers for sewer rates at the expense of all San Diego residential customers, in violation of state law.

Even though the City agreed to change its illegal practices in 2004, there was no plan at that time to reimburse San Diego residential citizens. Michael Shames, ED of UCAN initiated a class action to get the money reimbursed to residential customers. But the City did not offer to reimburse residential ratepayers for years of overpayment. Michael Shames requested a refund last year. When he was turned down, he initiated a class action to get money reimbursed and effectively questions future rate increases. An oversight committee has costs attached to it---but nothing compared to the approximately $40 million dollars that now go back to ratepayers.
