I have a solution
Lets say General Motors comes out and says in the year of 2010 we are going to produce a car that does not run on gas The car will be totally hybred and this is all we will produce from here on. The technology is here and it can be done. Think about this.
No dependency on oil,No more fighting for oil ,or war for oil. Car companies and the economy would floururish like the country should. The car companies probally would not be able to keep up with demand.therefore creating jobs. It will happen
when enough people get fed up and let them know we are not going to pay high gasoline prices .
I wouldn't mind gas prices
I wouldn't mind gas prices going absolutely wild thus forcing people to invent watter fueled cars or magnetic driven vehicles or anything that would not create so much damage to the environment as petrol. After all, necessity is the mother of all inventions.

price gouging by san diego gas & electric and oil companies
San Diego...America's "test tube" for oil companies to gouge consumers filling up their gas tanks at the gas pump and power (read san diego gas & electric) companies ripping off rate payers at the point power enters their homes.
As a San Diego gas pump user and a power consumer, I am sick and tired of this shoddy treatment. Aren't you? I'd much rather live in America's worst city to get decent gas and utility prices.
Gas prices and boycotting major companies
I have been thinking about the high gas prices and the large profits the large oil companies are reporting. Also, as I understand it, the cost of gasoline does not correspond with the cost of a barrel of crude oil. With these two factors in mind, we should start a grass roots effort to take control of the problem by using the old principle of supply and demand. The way it would work is, we would pick the oil company that is reporting the highest profits and boycott their products for a month or so until their supply is to the point where they have to lower prices! After the prices fall we can move on to the next company. ExxonMobil might be a good place to start!
anyone have info on long-term gas price forecasting?
I am working on a project regarding transportation technology for my MBA at UCLA. I am looking for information on gas price forecasts for the next year, 2 years, 5 years etc. Is there anyone who does such long term forecasting?
Thanks,
DEAN
Neighborhood Share A Ride - Start one in our your neighborhood!
My idea is to start a local share-a-ride in one's own neighborhood or community. Example:
There must be at least 250 - 500 families in my neighborhood alone out here in East County; I thought if we even got 5 out of those 200+ families together to originate their trip from their own neighborhood (as residents in our neighborhoods do anyway every workday) that would cut down on 4 roundtrips for each of those 5 families that participates.
I know there are more logistics to work out and many more details but if starting with one community and then another and another that would:
1) immediately save money on gas not to mention wear and tear and mileage
2) take more cars off the road, lessen congestion, and cut back on fuel demand
3) perhaps start to make a scratch into the immense profits the gas companies are gorging themselves on my more and more cars using shared rides.
4) Fosters community involvement and neighborly activism
5) Advantage over Caltrans Car Pool Program is that, this idea focus on solely your neighborhood unifying those who live together for the short term purpose of saving on high gas prices!
Im all for a Gas Flu Day / Sick Out! We need to get the word more out there! Media exposure! TV Newspaper! Radio!
We are sick of gas prices except for those who most immediately benefit from higher prices and those who dont have to pay out their own pocket i.e. corporate gas and government officials.
When you run out of gas
When you run out of gas ...
Here is what you can do next time when you are about to run out of gas. Drive to the nearest gas station. Preferably one of the famous brand names. Park your car in the pump island and let the attendant know that you are out of gas, and out of money. He has to tow your car away, push your car out of the way, or better yet, give you some gas!
Imagine “out of gas cars” sitting in pump islands of every gas station in California. This should send a clear message to our state and federal government representatives that it is time for them to take actions to regulate and lower these outrageous gasoline prices.
Talk is Cheap, Gas is Not
Talk is Cheap, Gas is Not
What can we do to bring down these astronomical gas prices down to earth and stop big oil price gouging?
Any ideas other than writing to our congressmen, senators, Arnold and George ?
to get gas prices down we
to get gas prices down we are going to have everyones help ! We need to buy as little as possible! start carpooling, dont use lawn mowers,weedeaters,go-carts..etc.drive as little as possible, buy grocerys on your way home from work so you dont have to go back out when you get home or get 2 or 3 others go with you and next time you get to ride for free.ok heres the big on stay home all weekend everyone could use more family time.dont go out to eat or shopping( they will lower there prices also).i just gave you samples.just use the least amount of gas as possible and have family time at home on the weekends.i dont think it would take 2 or 3 weeks for gas prices to go back where they should be.then they will know we will work together because were tired of making them richer and our familys having less!
Response to Talk is Cheap
We could all use public transportation, bikes and/or walk a little more. Most folks complain that public transportaiton is too far from home and work. If we drive to the public transportation and park, it's rarely too far from a bus or trolley stop. I used to ride the Coaster on business trips to Los Angeles a couple of times a month. Only once, did I see it crowded. It took no longer than sitting in traffic on the freeways and was a lot more comfortable.
Perhaps if we all use public transportation as much as possible, it will send a strong enough message to congressmen and the White House. I agree with you that "talk is cheap" and applaud your candor.
Talk is cheap, Gas is not
Thnks for your response UCANSUE. I agree with you on using public transportation and bikes and hybrids. Unfortunately not evreyone can do that. For example my sister works in the SF Bay area but she lives 70 miles away and there are not any good public transortation. So she has to drive 140 miles ady.
I think we should pressure our local, state and federal governments to implment both price cap and consumption limits; such as surchrge for those who use more than say 40 gallons of gas per week. This way most people will not drive big gas guzzlers.
Worse than you think
Every one is disturbed but I don't see any analysis. If you track gas prices back to 2003, here locally they were $1.36 a gallon for regular. According to the oil industry's own website material a rise of $1 for a barrel of oil will translate into a rise 2.74 cents per gallon at the pump. OKKKAAY! Using their own figure, gas should be about $1.76 per gallon now.
Add to this that last year the US Oil companies posted the largest profits in history (yes in history) what is going on is clear. One might think that in a market economy, the big oil companies would compete for your dollar and drive prices down. That hasn't happened. Like a highly trained drill team, they turn en masse and their adjusted prices are virtually the same. Hard to believe they aren't communicating and orchestrating this rises. In fact, it is unbelievable. In the US, there are legal statutes concerning this such as the RICO act. Under the RICO act, oil executives found guilty of colluding to price fix would do time in a federal prison.
Well gee, thats nice you say. Then why aren't they in prison? Apparently, your elected representatives only response was to discuss a windfall profit tax which bye the bye would not translate into lower gas prices or rebates to the consumer but merely a place at the trough of these ill gotten gains for the government. Horrors. Check it out. Not one senator or congressman has raised the issue of subjecting the oil companies to the RICO act. Not one. Guess that tells you who they work for and represent now doesn't it.
This will not end until we take back control of our own country.
"Unless the mass retains sufficient control over those entrusted with the powers of their government, these will be perverted to their own oppression, and to the perpetuation of wealth and power in the individuals and their families selected for the trust." Thomas Jefferson
collusion difficult to prove
you make very good points my friend, however, it's highly unlikely you would ever find direct evidence of one ceo explicitly talking to another ceo about price manipulation. The reason is: they don't need to. You are right that the pricing similarities are more than pure coincidence, but in today's information economy, there is no shortage of services reporting the price of oil and gas and other information about rival companies. besides, sending a couple of ceos to jail would hardly change the status quo as they would merely be replaced by ceos with the same agenda and slightly more discretion. bush was right when he said your country was "addicted to oil." the part that he conveniently left out is that he and his buddies at shell, exxon, haliburton, gm, ford, lockheed and the rest of the military-industrial complex (including the democrats) are the PUSHERMEN. the oil companies are simply playing the game by the rules set out by the government. and until the interests of consumesr and citizens are put above those of the other "people" (corporations) inhabiting this world, not a whole lot is going to change.
Ethanol Alternative to Gas, Maybe Not ?
Lots of excitement about using ethanol (E85) as an alternative to gasoline and to reduce foreign oil dependence . Ethanol plants are being built everywhere, creating a huge demand for corn. Now maybe ethanol can substitute for gasoline and lower gas prices, but corn prices have almost doubled in the last year. Farmers are selling coin for fuel instead of feeding corn to cows. resulting in higher meat and dairy prices. I'm not sure gas prices are coming down, but food prices are definitlely going up !!! The federal government seems to be actively promoting ethanol (especially farm states)., and I am not sure I trust the feds to solve high gas prices anymore than I trust ExxonMobil.
Ethanol push causing a crop crunch
Looks like the meida is catching onto the problems with ethanol.

Gasoline prices.
My comment is that after Hurrican Katrina did lots of damage, and the oil companies and the refineries increased their profit margins dramatically, using the damage from the hurricane as an excuse, we had lots of coverage in the media about the gouging, and we even had several politicians bringing attention to it. Now, with no reason for the prices to be high, we're being gouged again, and I don't see much press about it. Does anyone see anyone doing or saying anything about it, or have we just come to accept it? I read, I believe last year, that the consumer could easily take charge of the situation simply by boycotting Exxon Mobil, and if we did that, Exxon Mobil would drive the prices down, in an attempt to be competitive. I think it's time to get those emails going out to everyone, and to boycott Exxon Mobil until the prices drop 50 to 60 cents per gallon, and they going back to making only a huge profit.
Boycotts
Selecting a specific company for a boycott is not a easy decision. ExxonMobil is an easy target because of their size, but locally other majors such as Union76 and Shell almost always have considerably higher prices.. Some suggest buying only at independent stations, but their prices are not always the lowest. The only grassroots solution I see is buying gas at the lowest price stations regardless of brand. If everyone used fueltracker, price shopped, and considered every fill-up as a vote with dollars, then maybe we have a chance of getting high price stations to compete.
Disclosure: Yes, I own shares in XOM and BP, but I need dividends to buy gas
Gas Prices
I am disappointed in our society. Our federal government is letting the gas prices get out of hand and in return is causing a lot of conflicts within the U.S. This causes a lot of problems for our citizens. Example,
1. Retired person(s) living on a fixed income cannot afford this type of increase.
2. It is forcing a lot of U.S. companies to fall by the wayside. Take a look at GM, Ford, etc ..... This is hurting the large corportations also with layoffs, loss of sales, etc.
3. This is the same thing as robbery ...... Oil companies get richer and the poor
get poorer.
People need to stick together and fight this problem.
diesel prices follow gasoline's lead
I use Diesel in my truck and the
prices have been stable ($2.79) while gasoline for my car keeps going up.
Last time gas prices shot up, so did Diesel at
about the same rate.
