UCAN Pledges $500,000 to fight Sunrise PowerLink

UCAN News

In an exclusive interview with Michael Shames today, KGTV News reported that UCAN's Executive Director has committed a $500,000 war chest to fight SDG&E's $24 BILLION plan to build the Sunrise PowerLink. UCAN has argued that the PowerLink is unlawful, a fire hazard and that there are at least 17 better, cheaper and more environmentally responsible solutions on the table for SDG&E.  GET THE STORY AT KGTV.

SDG&E isn't about Saving Money

Regulated utilities like to spend money. Like for the Sunrise Power Link project. And wrestling in court probably ranks right up there with the rest of their dollars. Why? Because when they turn around and ask for rate increases from the same folks that allows them to spend the money they'll get it. And from what industry do those folks return once they're off the commission? Likely the energy industry where they'll be treated as fairly as the industry feels they've been treated by them.

When the Industry has a commodity that people really can't live without the public likes to regulate them so they're not gouged for pricing. So they form a commission and then the business goes to them and asks for rates that guarantee profit. And the more money spent the higher the rates and the more the profit. Works every time. If the commission would use the concept of owner equity being used to develop new resources, i.e. take it out of the pocket of shareholders, I don't think we'd see near the attempt to spend.

It may be necessary to fight SDG&E to stop the needless expense (and harm to the environment using the method they plan,) but the real culprit is probably the PUC. And how do you fight that? I suggest instead of being appointed they be elected. And the public that elects them should ensure they aren't beholding to the industry. And make it a requirement to restrict their after office job so they don't go into the industry.
