SDG&E Sunrise Powerlink Offers to Avoid Anza-Borrego State Park

UCAN News

Rob Davis wrote an article in the Voice of San Diego reporting that SDG&E had to back down to the fury from environmentalist groups that the Anza-Borrego Desert State Park was the only route for the Sunrise Powerlink. Of course there are comments by UCAN Executive Director Michael Shames tactfully and factually stating that the move to change the Sunrise Powerlink's route appears to be a diversion.  Read more.

The real questions are whether or not winning this battle wins the war for more unnecessary taxpayer money spent for a project (lobbied for the sole purpose of making a large corporate entity richer) and whether or not the real issue has been laid to rest using diversionary tactics. In the Voice of San Diego article, author Rob Davis quotes SDGE's parent company Sempra's CEO Donald Felsinger stating in 2007 that "I will assure you that if there was any way not to build this through the park, we would not build it through the park".

It's just like politics as usual playing the "shift the issue" game. We see this game played on every single political campaign ad and have heard it in every debate. Well, it's time we wake up and really study what is needed and what is not when it comes to proposals that will either cost us billions and/or make billions for some corporation. What happened to the campaign promises about renewable energy sources?  Why was the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission given new powers to take precedence over findings by the California Public Utilities Commission while we're listening to legislative hearings interrogating people as to who stopped regulations?  We're also being diverted from discussing whether or not there is any brush on this route that could start massive fires that destroy endangered species, property or could kill people. This southern route additionally was alleged to contain 2,000 acres that were supposed to be owned by The Nature Conservancy and part of the Anza-Borrego Desert Park. Are the environmentalists going to settle to just preserve what is offered?

When are we going to stand up against corporate greed when we know darn well there are many other options than this giant line of power poles equivalent to a 12-story building stretching as far as the eye can see?

I can assure you I am not taking the position of a democrat, republican or an environmentalist.  I'm taking the position of one taxpayer fed up with being fed "lines" of lies!
