Sunrise Major Development: Imperial Irrigation District Pulls Out of Deal

UCAN News

In a dramatic development on November 16th, Imperial Irrigation District said it was ending attempts to cooperate with SDG&E on the Sunrise project. IID criticized SDG&E's preferred route for the project as economically damaging to the environment, to agriculture in Imperial County and to its Imperial County citizenry.

IID went beyond simply pulling out of the project. It wrote that it is continuing with other transmission projects that could provide access to renewable energy in Imperial County and thus render the Sunrise project obsolete. It wrote: “We believe we can provide you and your ratepayers with an environmentally sound and lower-cost service alternative (to the Sunrise line),” the irrigation district told SDG&E. The project with the Los Angeles utility would move power north of San Diego County, then west to L.A. which could then be routed down to San Diego giving SDG&E access to renewable energy.

With an environmental impact report on Sunrise coming out in a month and a half, IID is saying it would cause significant damage to agricultural lands, the IID letter could be a potential death knell for SDG&E's preferred route for the project. SDG&E's arguments for the Sunrise project also suffered a blow last month when wildfires burned across the proposed route and under the Southwest Powerlink.
