SDG&E's $220 Million Rate Increase Bomb

Newsletter Article

It isn’t official and it'd very unlikely that you’ll hear a peep about it on your TV, but SDG&E is dropping a rate increase bomb sometime around Christmas.

In a set of obscure documents quietly filed with the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) in August, SDG&E announced its intent to increase annual rates by almost $220 million beginning in 2008. For small customers, who use about 500 kWhrs and 40 therms per month, they want an additional $24-$36 per year increase for electricity and close to $84 per year for natural gas. For customers who use more than these modest amounts, the increase could be much larger.

SDG&E can’t get this increase without CPUC approval. Unfortunately, the current crop of Commissioners (most of whom have been appointed by Governor Schwarzenegger), appear open to giving SDG&E what it wants. These same Commissioners have rubber-stamped large rate hikes for PG&E and Southern California Edison customers.

The good news is that by the time this case is decided in late 2007, there may be a different set of Commissioners at the CPUC. The gubernatorial election is this year and a new governor can change the make-up of the Commission by the time this case is decided.
