SDG&E advanced meter proposal approved with UCAN recommended changes

UCAN News

Customers that buy their electricity from San Diego Gas & Electric Co.are expected to benefit from a settlement announced Feb. 13. UCAN reached agreement with the Public Utilities Commission staff and SDG&E that make major revisions to SDG&E's proposal for a $600 million advanced meter infrastructure project.

As part of the deal, the utility has agreed to increase the benefits of the project, while reducing the costs charged to its customers.

Under the original project, the utility would remotely read customer meters, rather than sending out readers every month. But the plan was criticized by both the DRA and UCAN, a San Diego-based consumer watchdog. DRA's estimates showed that SDG&E's plan would result in a net increase in costs to ratepayers of nearly $100 million.

An advisory panel will provide oversight of the installation and implementation of the new technology. To see the actual Commission decision approving the settlement click on the link below.
