Feinstein in dark about opposition to Sunrise PowerLink

UCAN News

White eyes in the dark, looking clueless

In today's  San Diego Union-Tribune, Onell Soto reports that Senator Dianne Feinstein, the author of the Desert Protection Act, has enthusiastically urged approval of the Sunrise PowerLink.

Even more astonishing, is that Feinstein dismissed opposition to the project as the rantings of "NIMBY" environmentalists and others.

Not true.

UCAN has argued that the Sunrise PowerLink will actually cost $3.7 billion and is completely unnecessary. Our expert research and testimony shows that there are at least a dozen better ways of generating additional power for San Diego that are environmentally friendly, cost less, and do not require a massive powerline. Even the California Public Utilities Commission Department of Ratepayer Advocates thinks the PowerLink is a bad idea.

Moreover, SDG&E has refused to guarantee that the PowerLink will actually employ green workers or even be used to import green energy. The truth is that if SDG&E was really planning to create green jobs and green energy it wouldn't make promises; it would make written guarantees.

Finally, it should be noted that Senator Feinstein has taken $122,000 in campaign contributions from big utilities in the first three months of 2009.

In the story, Senator Feinstein promised to meet with County Supervisor Dianne Jacob to examine the overwhelming financial, environmental and voter opposition to the project. Let's hope she listens.

Oh, did we mention that SDG&E's parent company, Sempra, has spent $1.3 million last year in lobbying?
