CPUC President Sides with SDG&E in Proposed Decision Implementing Sunrise Powerlink Southern Route

UCAN News

As predicted by UCAN almost two years ago,  CPUC President Michael Peevey issued a proposed decision favoring SDGE's position on the Sunrise Powerlink. It imposes literally no conditions upon SDG&E to use the line for renewable power.

This decision followed, by one day,  Governor Schwarzenegger's Executive Order calling for 33% of California's electricity to come from renewable energy sources by 2020.

SDG&E is on board with 33% renewable energy as long as the CPUC approves the Sunrise Powerlink. "In assuming a positive decision on our Sunrise Powerlink next month, we are committed to getting to that 33 percent goal by 2020," said SDGE's President and CEO Deborah Reed during Schwarzeneggar's November 17 press conference announcing the Execuitve Order.

Michael Shames, UCAN's Executive Director, said the timing of the Peevey's proposal one day after the governor's order was "no coincidence at all."

Peevey's proposal relies heavily on the promise of Schwarzenegger's 33% RPS levels.

The CPUC is expected to decide the fate of the Sunrise Powerlink around December 18.
