This is nice to have all advantage of this smart meter in stop watch as it is of many new features and will make users avail of various kinds of different facilities. In my view attempting a new thing required courage and patience so that it could be handled wisely.

From all the comments I have

From all the comments I have read here, it is disappointing that not one has a good opinion about the “Smart Meters” when compared o Wagner meters which is not encouraging at all! I am happy that you are concentrating a page for this especially seeing that people are having such bad experiences?? I mean, people buy these gadgets to save money and cut down on our power bills and from the reaction here, it seems to be having exactly the opposite effect for us!!

SDGE's SmartMeter

On Friday afternoon I had the pleasant surprise of coming home that my rental unit's power was shut down for the weekend. Apparently they intended to install the smart meter (without our prior knowledge) and discovered some back-feeding going on between the two units. They turned off the power immediately and refused to re-install without the consent of city officials. This occurred on late Friday afternoon and by the time we knew that a city official had to be informed it was past 5pm on Friday so needless to say we spent an entire weekend in a powerless house with no heat. Such a nightmare!

Refrigerator and network router blown when SDG&E installed meter

Our refrigerator and network router were ruined because of the installation process of the new meter. SDG&E installers knocked on our door and told us to turn off all computer equipment. We forgot about the router so I'm not so pissed about that one. HOWEVER, they did NOT tell us about the refrigerator, or anything else. It would have been very easy for us to cut all the circuit breakers had they just told us, but they did not! We had to spend about $2k on a new refrigerator when the previous one was only halfway through its normal life span (according to the repair guy, that we also had to pay extra for since we only realized the refrigerator was toast a couple of days later, on the weekend, when we noticed that everything had melted!) Not cool!

Refrigerator and network router blown

This is outrageous and proves the lack of planning and concern SDG&E has shown with many elements of the SmartMeter program. You should insist that SDG&E reimburse you for the expenses you have incurred, and if they refuse please consider filing a complaint with the California Public Utilities Commission. Also inform your California State Senator as the California legislature is receiving an increasing number of complaints about SmartMeter rollouts from angry constituents.

SDG&E Rates

Here is a rate comparison from last year to this year and SDG&E says it is normal. For the billing period of 6-11-10 to 7-13-10, we were not home for 5 of those days, and we have never turned the AC on this year - the amount due is $82.01 compared to $61.39 last year for the same time period. How many people have this same problem?
SDG&E Comparison Chart for 2009 – 2010
Year Date Range Due Date Amount
2010 4-12 to 5-12 6-2-10 79.77
2009 4-10 to 5-12 6-1-09 67.26
Difference +12.51
2010 5-12 to 6-11 7-4-10 73.06
2009 5-12 to 6-11 7-1-09 48.37
Difference +24.69
2010 6-11 to 7-13 8-3-10 82.01
2009 6-11 to 7-13 8-2-09 61.39
Difference +20.62

SDG&E Rates

Your rate comparison has been mirrored in many homes-not just with SDG&E's SmartMeters but virtually every utility that has deployed them so far. A relative of mine is a senior citizen living alone and they do not have air conditioning.

They recently received electric and gas SmartMeters and compared to the same period last year SDG&E says their electricity useage has increased 60% and their gas useage by 30%! This is totally bogus.

Please consider filing a complaint with the CPUC-they need to investigate overcharges being levied on ratepayers by SDG&E!

The California Public Utilities Commission Wants You!

The California Public Utilities Commission told me they are quite interested in hearing from SDG&E customers who have had problems with SmartMeters. Whether it is a problem with installation, inexplicably higher electric or gas bills after the SmartMeters were installed, or any other problem, you can file an online complaint by going to http://www.cpuc.ca.gov/PUC/CEC/e_complaint/a_utilitycomplaint.htm

If the CPUC receives enough complaints they will launch a full scale investigation of the SDG&E SmartMeter program as they have already done with Pacific Gas and Electric (PG&E) in Northern California.

Cost Of Electricity Going Down????

Are you a shill for SDG&E? You can see only good coming of this? Give us a break!

At least 4,100 SDG&E SmartMeters "crashed" in Escondido on 5/18/10 and SDG&E says the meters "got confused" The only ones confused are SDG&E's captive ratepayers.
Now SDG&E is going to have to replace at least 30,000 SmartMeters in Escondido and 3,000 in Tierrasanta because they are afraid they may get "confused" as well.
Doesn't give us a lot of confidence in their accuracy, does it?

And Sharelynn Moore, spokeswoman for Itron, manufacturer of SDG&E's SmartMeters was quoted in the North County Times on 5/21/10 as saying the suspect meters will be returned to Itron's factory in the state of Washington to be "wiped and redeployed"

And no technical standard has been set for SmartMeters yet they are being installed and utilized.

Not a pretty picture.

Cost of Electricity going down!?

I only hear stories of Electric Bills going up.......but mine went down and so have others that I have talked to. Is this due to more efficient reading of Electric usage? Besides a hardware issue in Escondido that was fessed up to by SDG&E could Itron's Smart Meter actually be 'Smart'? I think your bills are going up because you are staying awake all night trying to come up with a new way to bash 'change'. I say keep the installations going, I only see good coming of this.

sdge meter scam

At our warehouse, sdge had a company replace our light fixtures with low energy use lights, got the new meter installed, and walla our monthly bill went up by about 30 %

what a load of crap by sdge

SDG&E SmartMeter Fiasco!

San Diego Gas and Electric (SDG&E) is not disclosing information about major problems with their SmartMeters.

The week of 5/17/10 more than 4,000 SmartMeters which measure electricity permanently failed in Escondido, California and at least 30 homes lost their power as a result.

Now SDG&E says they will need to replace 33,000 SmartMeters that could be impacted. And the manufacturer of the SmartMeters, Itron says they will merely "wipe" the meters in question when they are returned and then re-deploy them. This is quite troubling.

The California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) needs to begin an investigation into SmartMeter problems at SDG&E and other California utlilty monopolies without delay. The reliability of customer bills once SmartMeters have been installed has been questioned by many customers who saw their bills increase inexplicably. The CPUC needs to "pull the circuit breaker" on further deployment of SmartMeters until the reliability of their performance has been proven and the cause(s) of their failure has been determined.

I believe we have only seen the "tip of the iceberg!"

Tip of the iceberg

It remains to be seen if this is a tip of an iceberg, or not. There's not enough evidence for us to come to that conclusion. We do know that SDG&E was pretty forthcoming about this issue. Last Friday, SDG&E informed UCAN that it had identified a potential issue for certain meters in its first generation meter deployment that were installed last year in Escondido. These meters contained an earlier version of software. Over the past week, during a remote, wireless upgrade of the meters, about 4,100 of them developed problems, with approximately 30 of those triggering a remote disconnect switch causing a power outage. In some cases, the meters simply stopped recording usage data altogether. SDG&E believes the problem was isolated to about 4,100 meters; however it will be replacing all 30,000 with the first priority being the 4,100. It will complete replacement of the 4,100 in the next two days and then will be replacing the other meters in the upcoming weeks.

A similar version of problem meters also was installed in Tierrasanta during its 2008 pilot. It will also replace approximately 3,000 Tierrasanta meters ahead of schedule over the next few weeks.

UCAN will continue to monitor the meter problems, but so far, it hasn't been a serious problem in the SDG&E territory.

Many Reasons To Worry About The SmartMeter Program

My wife and I have learned the hard way that SDG&E's SmartMeters and their installation program are anything but "Smart!"

We were in the early rollout of the SmartMeter program and we received advanced notice by mail that the meters would be installed at our home sometime in the near future. We were to call a special phone number (which turned out to be SDG&E's installation "subcontractor") if anyone in the home had a medical need tied to electricity. I called the number and gave our address and clearly stated we required advance notice if our electricity would be shut off so the SmartMeter could be installed.
A couple of weeks later a rude installer arrived and told my wife they were shutting off our electricity for 15-30 minutes. There was no advance notice. My wife requires air conditioning in the summer and heating in the winter for health reasons. The installer was unconcerned about the major inconvenience and health risk he was causing. When the electricity came back on one of our cable DVR's was "fried"

I contacted SDG&E and received an apology and was told it would not happen again. Then a short time later an SDG&E SmartMeter installer showed up once again with no advance notice to install the natural gas "Smart Meter" Once again a total lack of courtesy or concern was shown by the installer.

I have been monitoring the readings to compare to our monthly SDG&E bills but now the Electric Smart meter has a constant error code "Fat. Error 7" and SDG&E thinks they may have to replace the electric SmartMeter. I wonder how we can expect an accurate bill this month with an error code like that?

I have also heard of many people not getting adequate warnings from SDG&E to unplug their televions and other sensitive electric equipment before the electricity is shut off for SmartMeter installation , and after their power is restored their televisions will not come on and need to be repaired.

Many customers are also seeing a suspicious increase in their monthly SDG&E bills since Smartmeters were installed at their homes.

I am glad to see that UCAN will be investigating these and other issues with SDG&E's SmartMeter program.
