Quicker Trigger For Shut Offs
EIX/SCE had been drooling getting these installed for years and have been thwarted until now. They were bragging how they could cut off service if someone was behind for as little as $35. Great news for the stockholders - or is it? CPUC has already expressed concern over SCE's anxious attitude for being able to quickly shut off service remotely once these things are installed.
SDGE has always been good at helping people in their territory keep their service on. I myself fell on hard times and could not believe how patient and reasonable they were with me on many occassions. I'm hoping this remains true after they finish installing all those 'smart' meters.
They haven't come to my neighborhood yet but I know of people who have had them installed. They were notified by mail when the contractors would be out, and then they knocked on the door to announce their presence prior to beginning work. But that's what I saw in the senior complex where I was visiting. In that kind of neighborhood, you don't want to unexpectedly cut off someone's medical equipment. So I was impressed with the way they handled themselves at that location.
In my opinion, the new and old should run in parellel at least for a while to allow consumers a way to validate their billing. Once the new meters are in, you have no way of knowing if the billing is correct or held hostage to their 'creative' programming to calculate your usage. And we all know that computer glitches do happen as well as intended sabotage. How do we know that some clever cracker doesn't figure out a way to hack the system? I really don't feel secure with the new technology. I want the reliable old meter left in place as a backup. If they want, I'll submit my own reading into the system and validate it with a picture of the reading and fax it in. Sorry, I just don't trust them to refrain from temptation. Look at what happened to 'deregulation.'
SDG&E Smart Meter Installations
Michael-
I beg to differ with you on this subject. Sempra Management responded to me that as far as the Smart Gas Meters are concerned, since the neither the electricity or gas needs to be shut off they have no intention of giving advance notice to customers regarding Smart Gas Meter installation. This is unacceptable.
Just because consumers do not complain to UCAN does not mean that the problem is not pervasive. It would be prudent to do a survey of residents and businesses who are in the pilot rollout of SDG&E Smart Meter installation to discern what is really going on out there.
I have heard of many businesses being disrupted by having their electricity shut off without prior notice in order for SDG&E to install Smart Electric Meters.
I encourage other SDG&E customers who have experienced this problem to come forward. SDG&E's subcontractor is really bad news from my experience.
I stand by my previous remarks.
Abuses by independent contractors
Thanks for sharing your personal experience. It is important that the public know about this. However, I must note that your report suffers some credibility when you reference insensitivity and notice deficiencies that "has become legendary". We haven't seen that much evidence of this claim. We have definitely received some complaints -- probably a dozen or so over the past year. But this is fairly small in light of the number of customers who have had meters replaced. So while your experience is clearly alarming and problematic, so far it appears to be more peculiar than pervasive.
SDG&E has contracted with an
SDG&E has contracted with an outside company to install and monitor the SmartMeters. Their subcontractors' insensitivity and lack of notice to consumers about the SmartMeter installations has become legendary.
Their subcontractor does not hesitate to inconvenience SDG&E customers when the installation is done. We had our electricity shut off with no notice even though a household member is on the medical baseline allowance. We had previously requested advance notice of the installation of both the electric and gas SmartMeters and despite assurances by SDG&E that our request would be honored we were given no notice and the installers were rude and insensitive.
What do you expect from a utility monopoly? Obviously SDG&E doesn't give a hoot about its customers and the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) is asleep at the wheel!
