Ringtone ripoff and cell phone spam settlements with Cingular and Sprint
UCAN filed complaints at the Public Utilities Commission against major cellular companies for forcing customers to pay for "Cell Spam." To their credit, both companies acknowledged the problems raised by UCAN and took some concrete steps to prevent them from happening again. The result: settlements in both cases. The cases clearly establish that wireless companies shouldn't send spam to its customers and then charge them. And, when third-party providers try to wrongfully bill wireless customers, the carrier has the obligation to fix the unauthorized or inaccurate bill by that third-party content provider.
See our Cingular and Sprint pages to the right for CPUC decisions adopting settlement and the settlement decisions themselves.

I need to help my friend
My friend has ALS also known as Lou Gehrigs disease. HE is in Southern California. I am in Georgia. I have been talking to him for about a month now. He wanted me to help him get in touch with the Als foundation. He said that the cell phone he was talking on was in his girlfriends name, and that she was threatening to turn it off. Well, now it is off and the ALS foundation can't even get in touch with him. He doesn't have use of his arms and hands, but has figured out how to dial a number after they have called him.
Does anyone know of a way to help him get a cell phone? I am unemployed right now, so I don't have any extra funds. His family lives on the East Coast and him on the West Coast. It is really important for him to talk to family. And in case of an emergency.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you,
TLW Georigia

Beware who you let use your phone
I came across this site during research on ring tone providing websites. I agree with everyones complaint in the difficulty in canceling these charges brought to you. I do not agree with letting your children use your cellular phone. Children are often irresponsible, as were we all at one point. We often initiate these charges on the phone through our own acknowledgment or the acknowledgment of a "responsible party that uses the line. Cell phone is billed through the primary legal holder of the line, therefore anyone who uses the line is acting on behalf of the primary account holder. These cell phone service providers have their legal backs covered, prior to providing or billing these types of services.
Second note: it should be easy to cancel any type of digital agreement for billing of these types of third party services. The cellular service provider should be able to provide you with this type of information. If No one is willing to help. Contact you local state attorney general, and follow the appropriate steps towards a resolution. Sometimes the attorney general's office can get your money back for you.
Sprint helpful but a little slow
I had a ringtone subscription charge on my Sprint Bill for the last few months. Every month I would call Sprint and ask about it. I was told it was probably a rintone download. Not that we remember downloading a ringtone but when your cell phone bill has eight phone lines and you are already paying $200 plus per month, what's $9.99? Anyway, I finally got someone at SPRINT who knew a bit more and gave me the right information. Why didn't they tell me that this was a subscription service the first time I called? It's a subscription to a premium serivces through Cellular Services Worldwide. The user of the cellphone that was getting crammed had no idea what was going on. The fourth Sprint customer service person knew. After finding this sight and others and learning more about this decpetive practice, I called Sprint again. Armed with more information I was able to get a supervisor on the phone and negotiated a credit towards my cell phone bill (against overage charges) to make up for these fraudulent ones. Sprint should make sure there customer service representatives give customers the information they need regarding extra charges on their cell phone bills. We could have taken care of this months ago.
Yes.
I do not have a child. I had never had a subscription anyway, so the charges were a fraud.

I had never even heard of this company, much less subscribed to it. When I went to the website, it said I had Joke of the day credits. Something needs to be done. I don't have a lot of money, and it sucked 9.99 out of my account. I only have $11.29 left. Someone help.
BOYCOTT SPRINT
BOYCOTT SPRINT. These mother f.ckers are trying to charge me 100 dollars for a picture mail that I never sent. Two months ago, I had picture mail blocked from my phone and a couple of weeks ago, I tested it to see if it was really blocked. I took a picture of my daughter and went through the motions of sending it to my wife ( another unfortunate Sprint customer). When I tried to send it, a message popped up saying that this service is blocked on my phone per subscriber's request. So I thought that everything was fine but when I received my bill, the sons of biches charged me $98.25 extra bucks for it. So I called the customer service line and waited on hold for about 40 minutes until I finally got a hold of some kid. I told him what had happened and she said that I'm being charged because I "attempted" to send the picture mail and because I don't have it included on my plan, they charge 3 cents per KB and one normal pic is about 7500 KBS. So I asked to speak to a manager, so she puts me on hold for about 10 more minutes when *mysteriously* my call got disconnected. This is the biggest crock of sh!t I've ever dealt with. How the f.ck are they gonna remove the service and charge me for testing it to see if they did their job right when the damn pic didn't even go through. Does anyone else have any Sprint horror stories?
CELL PHONE RIP-OFF CHARGE SCAM

I just received a message stating that I was being charged for "renewal" services! I didn't even know I had it before! What a scam! What can I do if they don't take the charges off?
Cramming
Any unauthorized charges on a customer's bill is called cramming. It is currently a violation in CA and most other states. In addition, the Federal Trade Commission at www.ftc.gov describes this activity as a violation. http://search.ftc.gov/query.html?qt=cramming&col=hsr&col=news&col=full
Verizon Allows Blocking
After seeing this $!&*# on my bill for 2 months straight, I started checking out the VerizonWireless.com site. I was able to find the option to add/change features on my plan. One of the options is "Block Premium SMS". This will not only block new messages, it will stop any recurring charges. Below is the description from their site. Hope someone finds this helpful

so who do i go to, to cancel getting these premium text messages?

Photobucket Signup Scam, Deceptive Form Brings $9.99 Spam
(revised, please delete previous post to remove PB exec's name)
I am beyond angry after being scammed by Photobucket's new signup form.
I recently opened a Photobucket account. I had no idea that I had to watch my back so carefully with Photobucket, because they have always seemed to be a reputable, aboveboard company. I was wrong, and I now consider them criminally deceptive. I have never felt so abused by an online company, and I am shocked and angry.
In a yellow box, implying that it was REQUIRED information, Photobucket asked for my cell phone number. I'm ill and on medication, and I was not thinking clearly enough to differentiate between PHONE number and CELL phone number, or question a yellow box on a form. I gave Photobucket my number, assured by their deceptive "we won't call you!"
Immediately I got a spam text message from RingAZA, informing me that I was subscribed to get ringtones for $9.99. I closed my phone, but the message remained until I replied STOP.
I then got a message saying I was "unsub" from RingAZA.
I don't believe it. I believe I will be fighting a FRAUDULENT charge on my phone bill, courtesy of Photobucket's criminal scam partners, Ringtone Channel, or whoever they are. I blame this on Photobucket.
It has been extremely difficult to track down anyone at Photobucket who's willing to say anything. I went to their help forums and got a lot of doubletalk from low-level troubleshooters who simply gave me useless 800 numbers for the scamming company, where I spoke to a rude, ditzy phone worker who informed me "WE DON'T HAVE TO HELP YOU." I filed complaints online, and got form letters saying "We are sorry you do not like our associates' offers" and giving me the same useless 800 numbers from the scam companies. Photobucket's first tier offers nothing but resistance and false "help."
I dug around in their website and got some names, and got their Palo Alto office's number from Directory Assistance. I reached what appears to be their liason with Photobucket Pro users. She called back and has courteously assured me that a higher-up will call me tomorrow. She expressed total shock and dismay that this is going on, but you know... THIS IS NOT HAPPENING BY ITSELF. I want to see accountability.
Photobucket, at some high level, decided to partner with these scammers who attach fraudulent charges to users' phone bills simply for being stupid enough to enter a number in the yellow form box. The form is one of the most deceptive things I have ever seen on the Internet, and it is absolutely disgusting that it's being used by a "reputable" company.
I'm sick (stage IV cancer) but I'm VERY angry, and I am strong and resourceful enough to fight this. $9.99 is merely an annoyance to me, but I worry about nicer people, the elderly, for example, many of whom may be on very limited budgets. I worry about people who don't know how to pursue such things. Students, housewives, people whose first language is not English. Photobucket and its criminal partners must be making a killing by stealing from such people, who never intend to pay $9.99 for a ringtone, but may not have the ability to fight it when it appears on their phone bill.
Every time I think about this, I get angrier. I want Photobucket to PAY. I want to see this practice completely exposed.
I want every person who works at Photobucket to THINK about how these fraudulent $9.99 phone bill charges may hurt some little old lady who needs that money for food or medicine, and who can't begin to fight these creeps. They make it extremely difficult to track down anyone who knows anything about this, and the low-level techs I reached on the forums were obviously under orders to keep a lid on customer outrage.
Photobucket must be stopped. At this point, I want to see them fined heavily and publicly exposed for this practice.
I have time and energy and determination to expose and FIGHT Photobucket's signup scam. Where do I go to form an army?
Rip Off By Sprint, New Motion, Bid4Prizes
We have been charged an ongoing $9.99 plus taxes by SPRINT for a 3rd party charge from Bid4Priz that is owned by New Motion, Inc. They, Bid4Priz and New Motion, apparently make deceptive web site ads and test messages ads to get cell phone numbers to make fraudlent charges to one's cell phone. SPRINT allows this scam to take place even though they have been told about it for months. We never ordered anything from Bid4Priz nor did we receive anything from them. Bid4Priz and SPRINT don't care if you are getting ripped off, they just want your money.
how can i cancel
hi i saw the subject i need someone to tell me how to cancel this$9.99 from my bill if you can email me please at misreynas2 [at] hotmail [dot] com
New Motion Inc. SCAM
I just finished filing a complaint with the California Public Utility Commission regarding the exact scam you are referring to. A 9.99 charge began appearing on my pre-teen son's cell phone bill in October. I asked him about it. I thought perhaps it was a one time mistake he'd made. I finally called Sprint last month. I was directed to New Motion. I unsubscribed via their automated system...but surprise...the 9.99 charge re-appeared on my bill this month.
I called New Motion and was told my son authorized the subscription. The only thing he remembers is being asked, "Do you want to win a prize?" Like any child, he chose Yes. They did agree to send me a refund for the past month. I called Sprint to give them a full report and accused them of selling cell phone numbers with text messaging....because how else did they get access to my son's cell phone number? They denied any wrongdoing and the rep seemed clueless about any scam.
By the way, New Motion has odd "customer service" hours. All Pacific time and they take an hour for lunch...no weekends. Who has time to deal with this kind of thing? I first went to the California Attorney General's Office Web site and was routed to the PUC. If you are the victim of this scam, please file a complaint with the California PUC and with Sprint.
Bid4prizes dishonest
Just recently I signed up for Photobucket online and in the process you are hit with an ad for bid4prizes upon signing up, this ad is displayed the sam time as photobuckets signup and there is a box that you can uncheck to bypass this but when you sign in it asks for your cell number.
I signed in thinking it was phtobucket and aparently signed up for this useless site Bid4prizes. I was charged on my cell phone $10.00 instantly. As soon as I saw the charge Icalled Bid4prizes and explained to them what had happened, the support person said that as soon as the charge shows up on their records they would issue me a refund.
So I waited a day and called back only to be greeted by a rude support worker who refused to be helpful and referred to me as being stupid.
So of course along with being insulted they have my money and I have absolutely nothing to show for it.
As far as I am concerned this is deceptive and just short of scamming someone.
Just a warning for those signing up to Photobucket and Bid4prizes.
Once the have your money forget about it.
I used to work for
I used to work for Sprint.
Anytime you have third party text. YOU have to cancel. Sprint has nothing to do with this or any other carrier. This is this Inc. that is getting through to all cell phones. If you have SMS messaging blocked. You will never get any type of text asking you to subscribe to something. Also be aware of placing your cell phone as a contact. That could be another way third party people can get your number.
bogus charges, overcharges
I also recieved my bill from Verizonwireless....had 2 charges for premium text messages for 9.99 each. I called, and I have to pay for them. I texted stop to both, and both gave me a number to call, so here it is if anyone wants it.

I'm going back to cricket. I had them for 5 yrs, my bill was the same every month, unlimited calls and text..nothing to count..I could even check my yahoo or hotmail emal on my phone. I also got 500 long distance minutes a month which never got used, I dont' call out of state. All for 67 a month, including the taxes. now my verizon is over 200 a month and my plan is only 79.99. I tried verizon and do not like it, so going back to cricket and will happily pay the cancellation fee for verizon, it will be well worth it.
Virgin Mobile 66047 scam
Also getting 9.99 charges on virgin mobile, anyone know how to get rid of these charges
me tooo
i cant believe this, i have virgin mobile and they charged me $9.99. the only thing you can do is cancel the charges. it pisses me off because now i am out 10 dollars and i dont get a top up until february. i like want to sue this company because they hacked into my phone and took out the money. my service even said it was a scam. if anyone knows any way to get the money back please help me.
My child, too!
Its not VM charging you, but they should be responsible. This has happened 3 times to my child - $30 for nothing!!! She text "Stop" according to the on screen instructions, but that's when you get the charge! It doesn't stop, it automatically takes the $9.99 out of your top up money. I haven't found a way to get the money back, VM says its not their problem, and can't refund the money. VM says they can block all text messages, but that's not cool. It's cheaper to text than to call, and my child uses the text more than anything. She didn't realize she was incurring a monthly fee, it never said that. I am totally frustated, and VM said it was a "Flycell" charge, to call them - so that is my next step. I will write back if I get any updated news. Just delete the messages and don't reply at all, or else they take the $$$!!!

De-authorize 3rd Party charges
Try these solutions:
(1) Call your cellular phone provider and tell them that you do not authorize any 3rd party billing on your account. Verizon currently calls this "Premium Block". I don't know about any of the other providers. Get the name of the rep you spoke with and the date/time you called especially if they say no, that they can't block 3rd party billing on your account.
Write a follow up letter to your provider stating that you requested blocking and either (a) confirming that 3rd party billing is blocked on your account or (b) they refused. Send with Proof of Mailing, USPS. You'll want this letter if you file a complaint.
(2) When you've exhausted your possibilities with your provider and canceling the premium service (good luck with canceling that service, btw, the rip-off artists), file a complaint with the Public Utilities Commission. Here's the link for California's: http://www.cpuc.ca.gov/puc/. Link to the complaint process: http://www.cpuc.ca.gov/PUC/forms/Complaints/utilcomplaints.htm
If the cellular providers are going to conspire with these Premium texting services who are trying to get at our hard earned money then they should be held accountable. For underhanded advertising tactics or simply blasting their services through to our phones and charging us for it, the cellular providers are getting their cut too. You'd better believe their getting their piece of the pie or they wouldn't be billing on the 3rd parties' behalf! So, take a few minutes and file a complaint to get your money back. If enough of us do this the big cell companies will clean up their acts real quick.
I got hit with 66047 as well. Verizon couldn't tell me who it was, what the number was, etc.

Good luck!

How to fight back!
I had a problem with the bill for my new iPhone and like many I took to the internet for a solution. Fortunately, for me and for whoever finds this post, there seems to be a solution. I ran the bill at www.myvalidas.com and they got everything straightened out. Unfortunately, I was charged correctly, but had gone over my minutes without knowing. The ridiculous part was that I did not get my first bill until after the second billing cycle so there was NO warning.
See if you can find help at www.myvalidas.com.

Last month's bill from
Last month's bill from Sprint charged us over $45 for internet use which we had requested to NOT have on our plan. We called them immediately and they said that it was charged in error and the amount would be credited to our account. We just received this month's bill and the amount had NOT been credited, plus we had been charged an extra almost $12.00 for this month. We called Sprint again and they said that their "review" people had looked at the charge and said that it was valid, and that we were liable. Sprint customer service also said that we had used our phone for the internet a number of times, quoting times like midnight, 2 am and 4 am of the same night, among others. We have a family plan, and none of us have used our phones for internet use, yet they have these times and dates. Are we victims of cell phone hacking?
What really angered us was that the customer service people were particularly unhelpful, insisting that there was nothing they could do. We just have to pay up. They wouldn't even listen to what we had to say, just talked over us as if we weren't speaking at all. We eventually managed to get the Sprint person to allow us to talk to her supervisor who said much the same thing as she had, but asked whether we wanted them to initiate a fraud investigation. Of course we said yes. We are hoping that they actually do that and don't just do nothing and then come back to us saying that fraud had been ruled out.
We still have a year on our plan - and, yes, we have marked the end date of our contract on our calendars. We don't have $200 per line to fork out. This is one company we will gladly see the last of. It cannot come soon enough.
Same thing happend to me!!!
Same thing happend to me!!! So I ended up having to switch my phone number (hoping that would take care of the problem) and tadaaa I got yet another charge for something that I never used. I really enjoyed how customer service insulted my inteliegence by calling me basically a lier and that it was impossible...
Sprint overcharge
I too am having a major issue with sprint. I recently noticed that they had been charging me for 3 different county taxes for well over 5 years. I also called them in July to have this fixed and they told me that there would be NO refund (HUH?) that it would have the same charges for the ONE county I actually live in. In August we called to have my husbands phone cancelled since it had been stolen we then took the phone we used previously on this line and asked sprint to use that instead. By doing both the fix in July and use the old phone in August we renewed our contract, we were never told nor were we notified by mail. When I asked about our contract date they gave me a July of 2009 for my phone and an August of 2009 for my husbands phone, the same times that we had issues taken care of. When I told them that I NEVER asked for a renewal and that I no longer wanted the service I was told that there was a 200.00 per line cancellation. Is this how they run a business? I called an attorney and we are considering a Class action lawsuit, any one want on board?
Sprint renewed my contract without my permission
I called Sprint to say that they signed me up for a plan for 2400 minutes when I wanted the 1600 minute plan. They "corrected" the problem but never told me this change date started a new contract. When I switched to ATT I called sprint to cancel service. They tried to talk me into staying but never said ANYTHING about early termination fees. I got a bill for $400. I called Sprint and only then did I find out that I had terminated the contract "early". This is so unfair. They have sent this to a collection agency. Has there been a class action suit started?
Sprint
HI Kristy
I just happened on this website and saw your posting about wanting to do a class action lawsuit against Sprint. I have had a similiar situation recently with Sprint. After they couldn't send me a working phone when I first signed up, then to find out I do not have service between work and home, and numerous billing errors on their part I cancelled service before the contract they CLAIM they have expired and now they are trying to collect over $1400 worth of early termination fee's from me. They have turned it over to a collection agency and I am fighting with both the agency and Sprint over this. I refuse to pay, I think they should not be able to conduct business like this. If you have got any further information regarding what to do or if you have started a lawsuite I would love to join in.
Erroneous billing by Sprint
I also have disputed Internet and over charges with Sprint. My plan is $59.99 a month but for the last 6 months or so it has been over $100! This last bill had $25 in charges for Internet access! The first time I called I was transferred about 3 times. The Customer Service Rep said the Finance Office had to credit my account. Transferred to Financial Office I was told Customer Services had to credit my account. I was then told since I was credited once before and the rep did not make a note to discontinue the Internet, I could not be credited a 2nd time! I just waited a day or two and called Sprint back and got a rep who was decent enough to go ahead and credit my account! On my phone there is a button on the left side for accessing the Internet making it almost impossible not to push just carrying the phone! I think we all need to get together and file a class-action suit.

Sprint ripping you off and over charging
Sprint has been ripping me off monthly for almost one year. Do you check your cell phone bill line by line - you had better if you don't want to be ripped off by Sprint. Every month Sprint over charges me by $150 give or take a few dollars. I then call them and sit on hold for about 45 minutes only to get a customer service rep on the phone who claims they cannot help. After insisting they review the bill with me, no call is any less than 3 hours per month, they eventually realize that they have, once again, ripped me off. So, Sprint goes ahead and credits my account for the over charge, re bills me the following month and over charges me in a different area of my bill. I have four phones with this company and feel like I'm in jail, since my contract isn't up until sometime 2010. How does one go about cancelling a cell phone contract with a company who is repeatedly overcharging and wasting my time every month. Can I bill them for 3 hours of my time at $95 per hour, that's my hourly rate. Anyone out there getting ripped off by Sprint like me? Send your comments and maybe we can do something about it to get
Sprint rips me off monthly
I live in Nevada I have been a sprint customer for like 5 years everything was great until the last year the bogus charges from ring tones and screen savers sprint say's they where downloaded on one of our 3 phone the phone they claim downloaded this is not capable of going online twice i was charged $19.98. I was givin sprint family locator free for 12 months but was billed $9.99 for all 12 months and have asked sprint 3 times to take the service off the account and to this day I am still being charged $9.99. Every month I am charged Data charges when i called and complained the customer service person told me my account has been credited in the past so they cannot credit these charges back to my account now the charges are one month $150 on my husband line last month $75.00 also on my husbands line and $64.00 on my line this month the data charges are $43.86 I relly hate doing business with sprint this is what they do to customer that made them what they are we all need to file a class action lawsuite.

Sprint is ripping me off- Your not alone!
Hi,
My sprint bill just went from about $250.00 to $750.00 Sprint is trying to charge me an additional 1000 minutes in overages. Sprint just decided to change my evening plan from 6:00 to 9:00 pm (without my permission) when I was already paying the $10.00 per month to have my evenings start at 6:00...I Just got off the phone with sprint I have wasted about 4-5 hours today dealing with their incompetence I got routed to the Philippines on one call. On one call the guy started to help me and the call mysteriously dropped off. Some of the sprint flunkies agreed with me but were too incompetent to help. And then on the last call the lady said the charges were legitimate and I only started receiving 6:00 evenings today and it was not on my plan before I got so mad I slammed the phone in her face.
I am beginning to think that they get a commission for pulling these rip-offs off.
Is time to call the Federal Trade Commission and the Better Business Bureau.
After today I think sprint sucks... there coverage has always been terrible anyways.
Another thing… I can’t log in to the billing section of their site it takes forever and hangs up when the screen is about to show up???? Any body else having these problems?

It's Time For The FTC To Hear About Sprint
Hey Gary,
You are absolutely correct and I am just about to complain to the FTC about all this money Sprint is ripping me for. Once again, my bill came and was $550 and should have been $250. Called Sprint and spent 2 hours with somebody in another country in order to get these charges removed. Isn't it funny that every time I call and spend all this time telling them exactly how they ripping me they credit me back. Why do I have to go through this every month. If anyone else is getting ripped off from Sprint let us know. I do not want to deal with Sprint anylonger but I'm stuck in contract until 2010 with 4 phones. So, either they rip me for their cancel fee on 4 phones or they rip me monthly. I want out of the contract free and clear with them.

Sprint rip-offs
I downloaded a ring tone once and was charged $9 for the month which is fine. The next month I was wrongly charged $20 for two ring tones that I did not download. I did not even preview the ring tones, I received spam text message calling me to download the ring tones which I ignored and deleted. When I called Sprint customer service I was told it was third party charge and they couldn't do anything.
Is there a condition in terms and service that says if I use the ring tone download service once, I agree on buying at least two ring tones every month?
I've canceled my data and premium service. Can we do something about these rip offs?
T-mobile rip off
I am a t-mobile customer, i was surprise of the charge on my bill by some scam cell world wide services. be a ware of such services.
THE PHONE NUMBER FOR CSW
THE PHONE NUMBER FOR CSW IS:
1-800-249-5104
I PUT IN AN INCORRECT PHONE NUMBER TO GET TO THE OPTION TO TALK TO SOMEONE. AT SOME POINT, YOU WILL HAVE TO GIVE THEM YOUR CELL NUMBER SO THEY CAN CHECK YOUR ACCOUNT.
BOTTOM LINE IS THEY WILL NOT REFUND MY MONEY EVEN THOUGH I IMMEDIATELY CALLED THEM WHEN I REALIZED I SIGNED UP FOR SOMETHING AND THEY TOLD ME THEY WOULD CREDIT THE CHARGES.
WHAT A MONEY MAKING SCAM!
Wow! I refuse to pay this
Wow! I refuse to pay this company. I am lucky that I found this website. I haven't sent in payment yet for this bogus charge from this scam company. I called the number you provided, by the way this is the one that works. I have tried the one on the website and one listed under another persons posting and they are no longer working numbers. They claim they can not refund my money saying that I initiated the subscription and entered a PIN code from my cell phone. I never did this. THEY sent text messages to me saying my subscription was renewed which causes me more charges because I do not have a test plan, I don't text at all. So, just wanted everyone to know even if your cell phone company says CSW will credit your account, they won't. Why? BECAUSE IT IS A SCAM!!
Ringtones 3rd party and Verizon Wireless
I'm almost 50 and disabled. I bought my wife a used cellphone from a company on e-bay to replace hers that was going bad. It came with a lot of personal information on it so I deleted it all. We heard these wild ringtones and after deleting them, my wife said she would like to have the theme song to "Saving Grace" currently on TV. I found a listing to download it free and by the time I was done, I was getting text messages that I was signed up for "COMBO CLUB" at $19.99 a month. This is through a company called RINGTONETIMES who is owned by CSW (Cellular Services Worldwide). I immediately notified Verizon of my problem and they said I should text the sender and make sure to insert the word STOP in the message. Boy did I!
I got a text message back saying the subscription was cancelled but I have not received my funds back in my prepay account. I spoke with Verizon again and they said they "hope" the company will return the money but they can't guarantee anything. I do not understand how this could happen in the first place. It is theft and I believe Verizon is responsible for allowing a 3rd party to take my funds as they have. The last message from this company is that they have no record of me having a subscription. How often does this happen to young people? This is a major scam that I bet reaches into millions of dollars for consumers. If it's not resolved, the next step is my debut on you tube!

You were billed for $19.99 since you had accepted for the Terms and Conditions once downloading the "Free Ringtone"- Whenever you enter you MTN into ANYTHING, you're more thank likely going to be charged for something. Just make sure you read every detail on the page before entering you # in anything. Just a tip from a customer service rep working for VZW-
Ringtone Cellular Services Worldwide
The same thing happend to me. I did not even subscribe and I am being billed by CSW 19.99 a month. I did not even get any ring tones. I went to Verizon and I was told that they could not do anything about it that I would have to contact CSW to get a refund. Problem is I can not get to talk to a human. They always tell me that there reps. are busy and to leave a message. I have but no response. How can I get to these people?
I called Verizon back again
I called Verizon back again and demanded that they remove the charge. They wouldn't, but this time they came up with a number of the company for me to call. I left messages at this company too with out a response. I believe that nobody actually listens to these messages. These people are making big bucks because most of us would rather just pay the fee that fight it (like I did the first time it happened). I am going to file a complaint with Better Business. I also sent Verizon a message telling them if they don't provide their customers with a way to block these third party billings, they will be losing business. I believe if enough people complained about it, they would have to do something. Have you seen the pop-ups on the internet that tell you to enter your cell phone number to receive a free ringtone, etc.? What is stopping someone from putting my phone number in there? Could that be how we are getting charged?
Yes - the pop-up deal where
Yes - the pop-up deal where you enter your phone number for the free ringtone and then they send Jokes/Horoscope texts and charge $5.99 per week. The company is Csw or Cellular Service Worldwide. As others mentioned - no one will answer when calling or e-mailing. BEWARE of those pop-ups! My daughter did not subscribe to this service nor agree to pay any charges. My phone company - altell - does not want to credit me and says I cannot stop the third party billing.
csw jokes/horoscope
I was charged $17.97 for a subscription I never authorized. Alltel refuses to take the charges off. I'm filing complaints with the Arizona AGG and the FCC. I've also obtained legal counsel.
same problem
same problem with csw jokes/horoscope here in SC.
I would like to pursue Alltel. Suggestions?
Ringtone ripoff
I had the same thing happen on one of our phones. My adult son said he didn't even request the service and has received no ringtones, etc, but was charged 19.99. I searched all of his out-going text messages and phone calls and there is nothing indicating this call was made. When I called Verizon, they indicated I needed to do the STOP 66047 number, which we did. They had no record of a number to call to dispute, but sugested I did a search for "Poly Ringtone club subs" I have spent a lot of time looking for this company, but can find nothing. It is very frustrating. Do you think these companies could pick a random number and charge them? This company obviously doesn't want to be found.

$19.99 charges
I just found similar charges on my bill only they were $19.99 twice a month and I got the same response from Verizon. When I questioned my 12 year old son, he said that there was a pop up on his MY SPACE that asked for his cell phone number. When e put it in, he started getting messages daily from Swami Predicts. I found their website: www.swamipredicts.com. The only phone number listed leads to an automated line, no real person. I have just e-mailed them and am awaiting a response for these unauthorized charges.

cell phone scam
I just got hit with a $10 fee from a similar "free ringtone" scam that my underage child fell for. Everything sounds the same except that the company is Flycell.com. The most infuriating part of this for me is that I told the sales rep that I wanted all fee-based text and phone calls blocked on all of my phones. He assured me that he had done so. Now I find that the only way Verizonwireless will do this is by blocking all text messages. This is not acceptable. If you agree please write your congressman and senator. I am just about to do so myself.
Flycell should be sued!
I had the same thing happen to my child! She has prepaid Virgin Mobile. Out of nowhere, she got a text message saying, reply with a text to #66047, to get access to ringtones, etc. The message never said anything about incurring charges! The message also said if you don't want to sign up for their service, then reply with "Stop" and they supposedly won't send again, or give any service. She texted back "Stop", but unknowingly was immediately charged $9.99 out of her prepaid minutes. Since we don't get a "bill" with prepaid, we didn't realize this had happened. She figured it out when she came to the end of her minutes real fast, and wondered where all her minutes had gone. I looked online to see the money had been deducted. We called VM, and they said it is from Flycell, and not their problem, and they have no way of refunding the money. It was allowed through their company, on their phone system, so why do they feel it is not their problem to deal with?! VM gives you so many minutes for a certain amount of money, so when you don't get those minutes, they should be responsible! Their bottom line is, they could only block ALL incoming text messages so she doesn't get any texts anymore (this has now happened 3 times $30, and my daughter has kept sending the "Stop" text to get it to stop - BUT IT DOESN'T STOP, IT KEEPS TAKING $9.99!!) And VM blocking all text is not good, she does alot of texting with her family and friends because it is cheaper than dialing [.05 cents to text] - her prepaid minutes go alot further by texting. VM said they cannot get the money back - THIS IS $30 FOR NOTHING!!! My suggestion is DO NOT REPLY AT ALL - JUST DELETE THE DARN MESSAGE! These 3rd party thiefs should be sued, and the phone carriers should be responsible to refund your money, since they got the money through top up, but didn't have to give up the minutes! TOTALLY FRUSTRATED!
Don't reply to the text
Don't reply to the text messages... that's when they charge you. With a virgin mobile pre-paid phone login to your account and in the one part you can block numbers from texting you. Block numbers 755-55 "Jamster", 632-32 "dada.net", 717-69 "ringtonetimes.com. Any number these text messages come from write them down and then block them... then post them online so others don't get taken buy these ringtone scamers.
My mother's phone got 5 test messages all within 1 minute from each other. All from different ringtone spammers/scammers. My mother doesn't give out her cell number to hardly anyone. I wonder why/how all of these services would text within 1 minute of each other. She didnt reply to any of the text messages so i dont know if she will get charged. I'm thinking she wont because they seemed to want her to go to their website and pump in a "pin" number. I think Google should throw these companies out of the Google index and out of Adsense and Adwords for ripping off people of all ages young and old. The cell phone companies should not allow any third party charges to any cell phone.
Cell phone companies rip off
Cell phone companies rip off customers any way they can. Competition must be so fierce that they only way to stay afloat is by making offers on deals that are below what they can afford and then inserting hidden charges or charging higher amounts to make up for it and hoping the customer doens't notice. I recently bought 2 phones with special promotions from ATT. In both cases when I looked at my receipt they had charged me more than what they said the price would be. And there were all these other fees that no one knew exactly what they were or why I had to pay them, but nonetheless the were there and I had to pay them.
Cingular
Cingular has charged me for Credits/Adjustments/Other Charges 203.10
And I pay my BILL on time. DONT GET CINGULAR... THEY WILL RIP U OFF LIKE A DOG.
Cingular Text Message
Thanks for sharing your story. Sprint PCS agreed to change its practice of charging for advertising text messages. Go to telecommunications on this web site and click on UCAN Sprint Settlement on the right side. It is called cramming when there are unauthorized charges on your bill and cramming is illegal.
Thank you.

Cingular Text message
Just got my billing. On it is a charge to both my wife's and my cell bill for text message sent from Cingular advertising text messaging is now available to our phones....and they charges us $.15 each for the message. If they mass messaged to all their customers...and charged...what an easy way to raise $$$... The upshot is we don't use text messaging..never have.
