The only thing I know that

The only thing I know that requires heat to vanish termites is fire. Burn the place down if it's absolutely infested and can't do anything else. Of course, I realize the costs of such an event but isn't there some sort of insurance to cover this?

trouble with Samsung TV from Circuit City

PURCHASED 45" SAMSUNG LCD FLAT SCREEN TV WITH EXTENDED WARRANTY FROM CIRCUIT CITY STORES, INC. ON 06-11-06. IN MAY 2007 THE SCREEN WENT OUT. CONTACTED CIRCUIT CITY FOR REPAIR AND WAS GIVEN THE NAME OF THE REPAIR SHOP THAT THE WARRANTY USES. WENT THROUGH THE PROPER CHANNELS AND MADE AN APPOINTMENT FOR THE COMPANY ( PAYLESS TV REPAIR TO COME OUT) WHICH THEY DID. THE REPAIRMAN ORDERED TWO PARTS FOR THE SET. TWO WEEKS LATER THE PART CAME IN AND THEY CAME OUT TO REPAIR IT. TURNS OUT THAT PART WASN'T THE PROBLEM. STILL NO SCREEN. ON 5/22/07 THEY ORDERED A FULL BACK PANEL FOR THE TV. BY JUNE THE PART HAD NOT ARRIVED, WENT INTO THE SHOP, THEY CHECKED SAMSUNG, THEY SAID PART WOULD ARRIVE 6/12/07, IT DIDN'T. WENT BACK TO THE SHOP TO CHECK ON THE PART AGAIN, THEY AGAIN CHECKED SAMSUNG, NOW THEY SAY THE PART WILL COME SOMETIME AROUND 6/29/07. I CALLED SAMSUNG AND TOLD THEM THIS IS UNNACCEPTIBLE, AND SUGGESTED THAT THEY WERE IN VIOLATION OF THE SONG-BEVERLY ACT. THEY SAID THEY NEVER HEARD OF IT AND COULD REALLY CARE LESS, AND THEY CLAIM I DIDN'T BUY THE EXTENDED WARRANTY WHICH I HAVE RIGHT ON MY RECEIPT, WERE EXTREMELY RUDE AND COULD OFFER NO HELP....WHAT TO DO NOW?????

WE HAVE REPEATEDLY CALLED SAMSUNG TO NO AVAIL. I FEEL THEY SHOULD REPLACE THE TV

trouble with samsung tv

We bought our samsung in Dec.2006, paid it off in 6 months, and almost to the date, the screen went blank. Called samsung, they sent a repair man out a week later. He didn't have the part, had to order it. They told us about ten days estimated time. We waited 3 weeks, calling all the time, and talking to rude supervisors..Finally we received a new upgraded model 2 days ago, but wish we could have gotten a refund, as I nor anyone else we know will ever by another samsung product. This whole process took well over 1 month, and was very frustrating. The customer service department is of no help, very surprised, as for how much money the consumer spends on these products.

Please note that this letter is only effective for California consumers!

Samsung TV Warranty Problem

UCAN advises you to send a Song-Beverly Act letter via certified return/receipt requested mail to Circuit City with Cc: to the Federal Trade Commission, the manufacturer and to the repair shop used by Circuit City. You should provide no more than 30 days for a written response. You will find a sample letter on UCAN's www.telenforcer.org website at http://www.ucan.org/telenforcers/consumers/pursueandresolve/formletters/....

ATT/Dish network lies to get business

We currently have Cox cable. A rep from ATT/Dish network came around selling the service, which sounded like a good deal...much cheaper than Cox. I spent a lot of time asking the rep if we would have the same services that we currently had and was assured we would. We got the dish installed today and NONE of those services are on the Dish network. I have gotten the runaround from everyone at ATT and Dish Network, and they told me that they'll charge me a $250 fee if I disconnect it. I am really incensed at this blatant lying to get business, but I guess I'm not surprised.

looking for information on solar PV electricity savings

An electrical contractor and I are entertaining seriously, actually determined to start a solar installation business. On the residential side we have decided that the smart pitch is to convince possible converters tp PV to focus on shaving their Tiers 3,4, and 5 kWh usage because that's where future rate increases will predominantly if not exclusively hit. We're putting together our sales documentation for this start-up. What we're looking for is a credible newspaper article or some other public document that makes the point that installing solar PV could dramatically impact/lower that part of your bill - and the increases in bills to come - if you just install enough to reduce your load to Tiers 1 and 2. We think that's a smart middle-ground position for the investment-wary homeowner.
Would anyone at your shop actually know of a public discussion of this issue that hit print?? Something authoritative we could package for prsopective buyers?

Apparent Internet Speed Decrease

I have been a customer of Cox Comm for several years. For the last couple of months, I have noticed a decrease in

internet speed, both in linking to almost any site and moving to a different page on the site I am currently on. I am

talking about major speed differences, sometimes up to two or three minutes, often my browser will time out.

Nothing has changed on my end, neither my security package nor additional programs.

I am using the normal Broadband internet cable that I signed up for several years ago. Now, Cox is selling their

"Premier" package for $59.00. Does anyone know it Cox delibertly degraded the normal internet package in order to get

people to sign up for the "Premier"?

Any Internet Jocks out there?
Thanks,
Jalanno

Cox Internet Speed

Over the past two months, I too have noticed a considerable slowdown on speed. I work at varied hours including many nights from 2-5:00 am and have found no increase in speed lately. It is understandable that video and other large downloads during peak hours might cause a speed problem to the Internet. I can't explain having the same speed problems during the times most people are sleeping.

The slowdown from Cox.

Jalanno, I am not a tech guru by any stretch of the imagination, but I have noticed the same slowdown in internet speed with Cox as you mention. Here is an interesting article I found about internet slowdowns:

Verizon terminating features without notice?

Verizon used to have a $5 unlimited texting plan(feature), but recently they have been dropping the feature without giving any written or verbal notice. This happened to my brother twice, and just recently my boyfriend. Is that legal? The first time they dropped my brothers plan i called and they could not tell me why it was dropped, but they easily reinstated it. The second time they dropped it they gave me many different reasons, i just assumed they were all lies because a few of them i KNOW were lies. They said it was a "promotion," that expired; no it wasnt. They also told me that they had given me written notice canceling the feature. No they didnt. The written notice that the woman quoted was a letter confirming the unlimited texting from the first time. I can go on and on about this issue, because they told me many lies; i can counter each one. Ultimately the woman told me there was nothing i can do. Then just recently this happened to my boyfriend. He had the same unlimited $5 texting; and they randomly took it off his policy. He found out when his bill was $20 more than normal. No letter giving him an option of keeping/changing to another texting feature. They just one month decided to start charging him for every text. Is this legal? And is there a way of finding out who else this has happened to and why it is happening?

Verizon text messaging plans

erieker, after speaking with the members of the Fraud Squad here at UCAN about your inquiry, here are our collective initial thoughts on the matter.

First off, we did some research online and were unable to find a plan of $5/month for unlimited texting. Then I called Verizon, who is my service provider, too, and was told they do not have a $5/month plan for unlimited text messages. I also asked about my current plan, b/c I couldn't remember the details of my $5/month plan that I'm on. For $5/month, I get unlimited text and pix "IN" messages; that is, I get unlimited messages between myself and other Verizon subscribers. Plus, I get an additional 50 messages per month between myself and non-Verizon subscribers.

So, it's possible that you all misunderstood the "unlimited" aspect of your previous $5/month plan. It may have just been unlimited "IN" messaging like my plan. My suggestion would be to go back and review the original service contract you received when you first signed up with Verizon. If you don't still have that, check out your first few monthly service bills to see what you were really getting billed for.

But, if it turns out that each of you didn't misunderstand, and you all truly had been on an unlimited plan for $5/month, then we would certainly like to hear about it so we can start to track this problem and see if others are having the same problem. Our advice is that each of you file a Consumer Complaint with the Fraud Squad via our website (look on the left side under "NAVIGATION"). We would like each of you to do so separately so that we can not only better track the number of consumers that are being affected by this alleged "switch-aroo," but also so that we can get individualized detailed descriptions of the plans that you all were on, what has changed, when, how, etc. The more details you each can provide will help us in figuring out what went wrong somewhere along the way.

Sprint Broadband adding on additional charges and fees

I have a Sprint Broadband Card for internet access - the charge had been $59.99/month + an additional $0.55 monthly for "Federal Wireless Number Pooling and Portability" + "Federal E911"

This month I was charged the additional "Sprint Fees" of "Federal-Univ Serv Assess Non-LD" $0.96 and "California State PUC User Fee" $0.07.

They've also started collecting "Government Fees and Taxes" of CA State 911 tax $0.31, High Cost Part A $0.13, High Cost Part B $0.79, CA Relay Service Fund $0.22, Tele Fund Charge $0.08 and Univ Lifeline Serv Charge $0.70

Since this is a wireless data card and not a mobile/cellular phone, I don't believe they should be collecting ANY of these fees.

I spoke with a Sprint customer service representative today who stated that as Sprint sees fit, it will add additional charges ("Sprint Fees") to my account to compensate for fees it incurs from the government. She also referred me to an FCC 800 number to call regarding the "Government Taxes and Fees" that Sprint now collects on my data card but did not prior to this bill. She did state that Sprint began using a new billing system as of May 3rd and that may explain why my billing due date is earlier than prior bills. I smell a class action lawsuit!

handicap access in Vista

I take my husband in a wheelchair to a medical building in Vista. The
exterior double door is heavy glass, so there is no way that one person can
open the door and push a wheelchair in alone. I cannot find who owns the
building, but have contacted the medical firm there that we visit regularly,
as well as the city of Vista. Neither has replied with any information or
help. Isn't it an ADA law that requires accessible entrance, especially to
a medical building??
Any advice, contact persons, suggestions or help you can provide will be
MUCH appreciated.
UCAN does so much good, we hope you can point us in the right direction
to solve this problem for us and the many others who use this building at
2023 W. Vista Way, Vista, CA Thanks !

termite treatment

Do you have any information about the use of heat for termite treatment? Is it effective & cost effective compared to tenting with gas?

Termite Treatment Alternatives

Although we are not experts in this area, we can provide you with some links that you will hopefully find helpful: 1) http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2003/08/30/Ho249239.DTL and 2) http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=alternative+termite+treatments.

The first link refers to a type of heat treatment you referenced above and is a San Francisco Chronicle article.
