The 800 # and 876-536-5711 Jamaican International Rates Scam

UCAN and its sister organization Privacy Rights learned of a phone number scam that is particularly vicious because in one case the phone number USED TO BE the fraud dept. number for Experian. In the other case, a La Jolla, CA victim who was desperately trying to call the 800# listed by IDT to opt-out of information sharing, ended up with the same exact message and ended up being referred to the exact same number where "International Rates" would apply.

Until very recently disconnected, the number was 800-301-7195.

An individual called our hotline and reported this to me today. She had been given that number so she could place a fraud alert. She called it (and I've done the same to verify her story) and was referred to another number to call. She got a message that says: "The number you have dialed has a new number assistance service. For more information ... dial 1-876-536-5711. ... International rates apply.... Brought to you by Marina Telecom." Nothing is accomplished by dialing the 876 Jamaican number. When given the choice to check one of the toll-free numbers or hold, the caller gets nothing but connected for a giant waste of time --to be followed by a third-party International call charge on the next phone bill.

Either the 800 numbers were discontinued and remained as references on other websites or the numbers were hacked into by a foreign company. UCAN could find no reference to a search for Marina Telecom.
The key words in that message are "International rates apply." But it's easy to not hear that warning.

When one individual dialed the 876 number, she later found that a fee of $7.14 was applied to her phone bill. Turns out that the area code 876 is a Jamaica area code. A google search on area code 876 turns up many warnings about this area code being associated with scams. It's easy to hear the area code 876 and think that it's one of the toll-free area codes.

It's instructive to do a google search on the full number (800) 301-7195. It shows that dozens of legitimate web sites, including the ITRC provide that number as the fraud department of Experian. If people call that number and listen to the recorded message, they are likely to then call the 876 number and be charged the international rate of $7+.

Further, when we made multiple calls to the (800) 301-7195 number, sometimes we were directed to dial 10-15-15-800 instead of the (876) 536-5711 number.

My parents just informed me

My parents just informed me of this Jamaican scam ordeal that they have been dealing with for a month. I say do what I do, DON'T ANSWER YOUR PHONE, EVER, IF IT IS A NUMBER YOU DO NOT RECOGNIZE!!!! If it is someone important, they will leave a message and you can decide then if it is a legitimate call.

One More Number

(876) 417-0875

Called three times today alone. They've been calling my grandparents for the past year asking for money. They've had two different reasons for calling. One was to give them $900.00 [sent to Jamaica, NY] for $9,000,000. This man who called himself "Peter." The current scam is to send $100 to Beaufort Island, N.C. and we would receive $4.5 million and a Mercedes Benz from a "Louis" also calling himself "Detective Ron." We threatened we would record them and their threats and send the tapes into the police and so "Louis" changed his name to "Detective Ron." He is verbally violent, telling us to f*** off, etc. Also he said that as a "Detective" he would throw us in prison for not sending us the money.

I am really fed up with the

I am really fed up with the tales of abuse I read here and on other sites. I am going to collect them all, write them into a letter [a snail mail letter] and mail copies to every governmental group I can think of, Congress people in appropriate committees, as well as prominent media. It is outrageous that these people can continue to harass and threaten people, and nothing is ever done about it. I've had enough. I will also refer this and other web sites in my letter, so the governmental and media people can check for themselves what is going on. This has got to stop.

I don't quite understand

I recently got a new cell phone number and I received a phone call in the middle of the night a couple of days ago. I didn't answer and dove deeper into my sleep when I heard the ring bc I knew that if it was an emergency the person would call back and hardly anyone I knew even had the phone number. I called the number back when I woke up the next morning and received a recording stating that my call could not be completed at this time and try my call again later. As soon as I hung up my phone rang again but I didn't hear it. I thought that it was a telemarketing company but when I called later that morning a male with an accent answered. I explained to him that I just got the number and he must have misdialed because I don't know him and I quickly hung up. He then proceeded to call me three additional times. When I made it to work I called again and tried to be nicer and help him understand that I know he was not looking for me because I had only had the number about a three or four days. When I told him this he asked for my name which I supplied (first name only)and gave his name as Kirk. He stated that God gave him my phone number or told him to dial my number. I don't believe this for one second and as a Christian I have a problem with people who speak of God and tell lies in the same breath. He didn't ask me for anything other than if he could call me again I wonder if my cell phone bill is going to be charged. He called late last night and I did not answer and this morning while I was ironically researching jamaican scams. Today he said that he was calling to just talk; I asked him in regards to what and did not say anything. I told him that I think these calls can get pricey and he stated that he added many minutes to his cell phone.

They call all night!!!

I got at least three phone calls from Jamaica between 7 pm and 9pm and then again at 1030, 1130, 100 and again sometime later. My wife tries to explain that it's the wrong number and then they hang up. She asks where they call from and they tried the crap that they are out of Las Vegas, and we just one $1.5 million and a Mercedes. My wife threatens them with legal action and they hang up. They keep calling, we have called Verizon and seem to get nowhere. As I type this my wife is on the phone with local police. I don't know what will get done, but my god, how frustrating!

I got two today, but this

I got two today, but this time caller ID said "unknown". One time it was a woman, one time a man, you could tell from the accent where they were calling from, and both asked for "Miss Mary." I said nothing, just hung up.

Kirk's calls

You should stop talking to this person; you should not answer the phone if he calls back, or return any calls from him. He is trying to take advantage of you, he is fishing around, trying to find the best way to do this. He is up to no good. Have nothing more to do with him.

i received a call from

i received a call from 876-596-1472 today. they said they were ups and that i had a won $1.5 million dollars, that since i was a member of nysc, i was randomly selected and was the winner. they asked me my address, which i did not give but they knew. where are these people getting this information from? what am i supposed to do about this? i have notified my phone carrier but wondering if i should get in touch with anyone else.

I HAVE LIKE 3 OTHER PHONE #S ON THESE PEOPLE I WILL POST.

uh-oh

It might be interesting to the law that you have a name and address, but it was a mistake to call them back. Check your next phone bill, you will be charged something for the call. These posts are so eye-opening, and these calls seem to have crossed the line from annoying to abusive and threatening, I am thinking to BOMBARD our Congressmen with all this info about what is going on. It has got to stop. Annoying calls are one thing, but being threatened with bodily harm and cursed is another. We need to get Congress involved to stop this. It is no longer just violating the "Do Not Call" list. Every state has two Senators, find out who yours are and send them your information. Send them the link to this site. STRIKE BACK at these sleazeballs.

Getting Congress Involved

No offence, you have good intentions but these con's/slimeballs are in a different country, i.e. Jamaica, and you cannot touch them unless you actually go to Jamaica and file charges against them with there local authorities. Congress, Attorney General, State Attorney General, FBI, FTC and the list goes on with agencies in the US but there is nothing they or any one else can or will do. The do not call list, it does not apply to these slim balls,...who will fine them or go after them. This is why they opperate out of countries like Jamaica.

Trust me we have tried everything and all we did was spin our wheels with our federal government on trying to stop these scum bags.

I disagree

True, the Do Not Call list is for the US only, but the federal government can and does get involved wth overseas operators. Someone posted here about them working with the Jamaican government, they have arrested at least 2 people already. And they have worked to stop major spamming operations in several foreign countres. The problem is getting them to take notice so they do something and don't just shove you aside. If enough people complain, and if they know this is not just annoying calls, it is now harassment and theats, I do believe they will [eventually] act. The squeaky wheel gets the grease.

Wow. This might be one of

Wow. This might be one of the most insanely indepth articles I've ever seen on the topic. Congrats and thanks.

WELL, they are still calling even though I told them my Mother-in-Law Died (NOT). They are also using area codes from her area and this morning our caller ID said ZERO 0

Just a few minutes ago they called again using 876-506-6292 and they tried to disguise their Jamaican accent! Glad to find this sight and hope it helps others, especially if they GOOGLE the numbers.

876 298 3764

Here is another number... I just got back from Montego Bay so someone must be collecting these numbers....

876 Scam

I got a call and when I saw the number I got it confused with our daughters area code so answered it. He told me his name was "Mr. Washington" but in a way that told me it wasn't. He then told me I had won $5m. I told him "don't don't don't call this number again" and hung up. He called back using call block and I let the answering machine get it. He talked to it telling me that the F.B.I. and the C.I.A. were taping the conversation, I answered the phone and told him "good, so am I." I can't but wanted him to think that. Well I told him to hold on and got my husband to pick up the other phone to listen to him. He then told me I had won $450,000, the amount shrunk between calls I guess. I told him I knew it was a scam, he of course told me it wasn't. Then I asked him what he wanted, he told me I had to pay $150 for a state stamp tax, whatever that may be, in order to get my money delivered to me in a package brought to me by the Marshal. I burst out laughing at him and told him to take the fee out of my winnings. This made him mad, and he called me a "bitch." Needless to say this made my husband very angry. He had a few choice words to say to him and then the man told him "I know where you live and I am coming to shoot you." My husband told him "you stupid S.O.B. do you think you are the only one that owns a gun? Come on, mine needs a bit of target practice" and then he hung up on him. I don't know for sure but I think it was him that called right back, I let the machine get it and when it did he hung up, then he called back again but forgot to block it and again I let the machine get it. If they start to call in the middle of the night like some have had them do I will just unplug the phones when we go to bed, and have everyone call the cells if they need to get hold of us. This is not my first dealings with these people, they called about 6 months ago too. I tried to put this call on phone block but it wouldn't take it, when I called the operator she told me the call was not from anyone in the states and that was why it wouldn't take it. Something needs to be done about these people. The number they use was 876-589-2825 I haven't seen it on here, but they probably have hundreds of numbers they are using.

Homeland Security

Someone here posted that the Department of Homeland Security Immigration and Customs Enforcement office is working with the Jamaican government to shut these people down, they have arrested a few [one a 19 year old guy]. I intend to find out where in Homeland Security to complain, but today we got another call, and I just said I had reported them to Homeland Security, "it is my understanding they are working with the Jamaican government to shut down people like you", and I hung up. I am undecided if I will not answer future calls, or answer and say "you have been reported to Homeland Security" and hang up.

Report Scam

I received a call today from aTel. No.:876-480-2915. I have a winning in the amount of $3.5 Million. They have transfered to me $500,000 but I have to send them $795..00 to pay for the Bar chart code or something like that and to receive my money. He gave me the Western Union Mtcn Nr. 318-384-5573,. I called Western Union and they told me that there wre funds available. They did not disclose the amount.
I've had this happen to me before. What they do, They will send approx: $100.00, but to themselfes. You call the Western Union and they confirm, funds are available and you pay them the amount and your money is gone. and you'll find out later, that he money was sent by you to them. I never paid them, because I was fortunate to have a friend inthe Wetern Union who found this out for me how it works.

I GOT HIT ALSO!

876 calls

I just sent emails to the FCC and my state's Attorney General, after having got one of these scam 876 calls at TEN PAST ELEVEN at night. I get several a day, I have had ten in the past few days. It is bordering on harassment. All ask for a bogus name, "Mary Smith" or someone, no doubt so they can claim it was a wrong number. Some are people, some are weird recorded messages that sound like Stephen Hawking on a bad day. They have money or a check for Mary [or me]. We are on a Do Not Call list; it makes no difference to these morons. I am SICK of them.

its me that posted new number new name same scam

SORRY I POSTED THE SAME QUESTIONS 3 TIMES BUT IT DID NOT SHOW THAT IT WENT THROUGH ON MY COMPUTER UNTILL LATER

New Number New Name Same Scam!

I GOT A PHONE CALL 2 DAY SAYING THAT I WON 5.5 MILLION DOLLARS BUT I WOULD HAVE 2 PAY $199 FOR THEM TO SEND ME THE CHECK IN PERSON.....THE FOREIGN LADY TOLD ME THAT HER NAME WAS MS. I DON'T KNOW IF THEY WILL CHARGE ME BECAUSE I KEPT CALLING HER TO ASK QUESTIONS (ABOUT 3 TIMES) THAN CALLING THAT OTHER NUMBER ONCE BUT IT IS A LESSON LEARNED IF THEY DO AND FROM NOW ON I WONT BELIEVE ANYONE WHEN THEY TELL ME I WON SOME MONEY UNLESS ITS FROM PCH.COM AND THEY COME TO MY HOUSE FREE OF CHARGE AND GIVE ME THE CHECK LOL

New Number, Same Scam

Unfortunatley you did exactly what they wanted you to do, that is to call the 876 phone number, that is how they get money out of you. The 876 phone number is a pay line and they charge your home phone outragious fees. The longer they can keep you on the line or keep calling the more money they scam. Sorry for your soon to be realized loss.

i know but i didnt stay on

i know but i didnt stay on the phone that long i just called back 3 times and 2 of the times i stayed on less 30 secs but the first time i stayed on for about a mintue but i'm sure they got money outta me but i am hoping not that much but i did file a complaint and gave out the numbers!!!

Can They Charge Cell Phone Numbers

I DONT HAVE A HOME PHONE THEY CALLED MY CELL CAN THEY STILL CHARGE ME AND IF SO WOULD IT BE MORE OR LESS THAN A HOME PHONE

CAN THEY CHARGE CELL PHONE NUMBERS?

NO ! They just use your minutes on the cell phone. If you call them, then you get charged for charges to Jamaica. Yes. I have a story also to tell, which starts June 16 '08 to Present time, and still going.

Mother-in-Law was Harrassed and THREATENED by the Jamaicans

This has been an awful experience, not only for my Mother-in-law, but my Husband and her neighbors. They all have been putting up with these Jamaicans for over a Year. I have personally decided to NEVER VISIT Jamaica do to the scum that have called and THREATENED my Mother-in-Law and her Neighbors. They have called and called and called. When my M.I.L. did not give her Personal Information to the Jamaicans, they threatened to come to her house and killer her by slitting her throat in the middle of the night. My husband has told them to stop calling and so have the neighbors, but it would not stop. She is Frail and suffers from Dementia, so we stepped in to handle her finance's a few years ago. What an Eye Opener. Another Scam did suck out of her bank account over $15,000.00, they were out of Jacksonville, Fl. We were able to get some of the money back by filing complaints. And when we thought that that mess was taken care of, by starting a NEW ACCOUNT, my M.I.L. gave the scammer's her NEW ACCOUNT NUMBER! We went through this 4 times and then decided to no longer leave a balance in the account and put a block on it. It worked and solved that problem, but now this NEW DILEMMA with the Jamaicans SCAM.
We found out she had called Jamaica and corrected that with the Phone Company. This group that is calling her are telling her she WON MILLIONS and with the Dementia she does not know her SS# or Bank Account Numbers, which has helped to keep them out of her money. She was to a breaking point after being told 10 times a day that she has WON MILLIONS and all they needed was her personal information. SO, I put call forwarding from her Line to Mine and NOW, I know how they harassed her to the point of almost giving her a Heart Attack. They start at DAWN. But, I had decided to turn the tables on them by telling the Jamaicans she had DIED. But, do you think that would stop them, HELL NO! They keep calling to inquire. They act like they have know her for years and plan on stopping by. SO, after a few days, the calls have lessened. HERE ARE THE NUMBERS:

The same thing happened to

The same thing happened to me. They must have gotten my number from somewhere along the sites i have posted it in my firm's interest. I never react to such scams because I know what calls or packages I should get and from whom. And if the number seems a bit funny I always check it before calling.

They got my Mom

I just came from my Mom's as she told me a woman was calling back about a prize
she won. Well since my Mom is so gullible (somewhat due to disabilities) she had
already sent these people 4 moneygram wires. Anyway....I was there today and
over the ocurse of 45 minutes not one but three calls came in from 3 different people
all asking for wires from her. I pretended I was her for a bit and they were actually
getting mad that I hadn't sent the wire yet. After telling them that I was the daughter
& giving them a piece of my mind they continued to stay on the line and kept asking
for her!!!!! Well I did have her phone number changed for the second time. I don't
know how they got her unpublished number anyway. I'm still shaking I'm so
mad. The phone company did say our feds can't do anything since it is coming
from Jamaica.

876'er attempted to scam my Aunt and Uncle

The number they were told to call was 876-296-3909. A foreign accented man who spoke with broken English said he was with the 'U.S. Marshall's Office' and was on their way to their home to give them $50,000 they had won in a lottery. When she told him she had not entered any lotteries, he quickly retorted that if she had ever ordered anything by mail or had registered with marketing surveys, she would have been registered for this lottery. She immediately called the local police and an officer responded to file a report. It seems that it's a common problem with elderly people being scammed by these Jamaican hoods. What was particularly unnerving was that the caller had personal information that someone only close to them would know (mentioned my dad's name and said they checked with him at the police dept. My dad has been deceased for 10 years and retired from the PD 2 years before he died). It was this information that led her to believe this was not on the up and up. The caller said the 876 number was to the Marshall's office in Cherokee, AL. Cherokee has a population of less than 1000 and there's certainly no Marshall's office there nor ever has been.
People really fall for this crap??

876-292-7791

These people keep calling my mothers house asking for me and saying they have a package waiting for me. This has been going on for several weeks. Today they changed the story to a check waiting for me instead of a package. Sometimes they will try and change there voice and name to fool her. They've left the 876-292-7791 phone number for me to call back.

Jamaica 876 scam Dwight Brown

For the past two days my husband and I have been receiving phone calls from Kingston Jamaica, 1-876-399-8428. The guy claims that we have a UPS package that was shipped to Montego Bay Jamaica to the Sandals resort and that he needs to ship to us within 24 hours. My husband and I vacationed in Jamaica almost 2 years ago so we started the investigation with Sandals resorts. The man calling has been very persistant in calling our home almost 6 times in 2 days. We looked up the scam on the internet and found this. We don't know how they got our number or the fact that we had been to a Sandals Jamaica resort. Any ideas?

re: 876 jamaica phone scam

My wife just sent me an email at my work saying that she had a strange voice mail on her "work" phone. A main saying his name was Ben White was calling from Sangster International Airport in Montego Bay Jamaica and something about baggage to be carried and has some information for her and asked her to call 1-876-393-7259 as soon as possible. We had just stayed at the Gran Bahia Principe in Runway Bay Jamaica in April '08. My wife could not understand how he could get her direct line at her work. I figured that because a couple pieces of our luggage had travel I.D. tags from her employer (Deloitte & Touche, a major International Tax and Acconting firm) that someone during the process of handling our bags at the airport gleened the information and looked her up online in the companies directory. We were not missing any bags or other personal items so there would be NO reason for this type of contact. As soon as my wife told me about this voice mail I went online to search for related scams and found this article explaining how they bilk you for the 876 call.

I got one today:

Caller ID shows 876-480-8020
It was a "Mr. Clark" from "Walmart Company" telling me I won $5.5 million AND a Range Rover. All I needed to do was send $400 Western Union to cover legal costs.

I asked how he got my number and he was rather vague in saying that it was a contest I entered from around Christmas time.

I said that was great!...but what's my name?

He stumbled hard and finally said that "his manager doesn't give him personal info"...

I hung up...LOL

All numbers starting with

All numbers starting with 876 and all statements that you 'WON THE LOTERY', ect. should be ignored and hanged up immediately.
All the scams are exploiting GREED, many people are quilty for, and not always can be identified as a greed, because many poor people are caught in the scemes in hope to solve their problems or EVEN JUST TO EASE THE PAIN TEMPORARY BECAUSE THE HOPE THAT YOU REALLY WON SOMETHING RELIVES THE PAIN OF YOUR DIFFICULT REALITY.

876 scam

The number that is calling me is 8768252728, beware people.

876 and others FRAUDS

My 70-years old friend who's a small struggling business owner was caught into the "Lottery" sceme. Since he's in desperate need of money to pay his bills in this failing economy, he belives in miracle that he might've indeed won the lottery. People with Jamaican accent keep calling day and NIGHT. A lot of money already ended up in their pockets.
Does anybody know how to protect my friend and millions of other elderly Americans?
I don't know what's going on with the aging brain? It supposed to become wiser.

scams

very scary.we will come to know about such scams only by reading these kind of articles or mails etc, thanks for sharing this information.

This is still happening...my

This is still happening...my brother got a call this morning (4/17/08) saying that the man was from ups in Las Vegas and were holding a package for him that needed postage paid in the amount of $150. fortunately, he called me before doing anything and we checked it out....the number he was given was 876-495-7510..J.M. Kingston.

He also received a call awhile back from International Gateway at 817/717-8455...telling him he had won millions of dollars and all he had to do was send $2,500.00 to have the money ship to him....he almost fell for this one.

Who do I call on this?

Same thing happened to us.

Same thing happened to us. we got a call on May 8th evening around 6 PM. My husband is so mad at them already I convinced him not to worry about those scam calls. They are calling from Kingston JM and i got a call just few minutes back May 16th, 2008 at 2:45 AM in the early morning. We got scared and call police, they suggested reverse look up. I was browsing and I got this article.

Thanks for sharing this info!

Suggestions...

Unfortunately since many of these scammers are from foreign countries, there is little we can do save to make our phone numbers unlisted. There are some tips, usually at your State Attorney General's Office, that may help. I've posted New York's web page on the subject below:

http://www.oag.state.ny.us/consumer/tips/telemarketing.html

I know this isn't technically telemarketing, but it's in the same vein.

The best advise is to pass along the information, and make sure you and your loved ones don't fall prey to these people.

Stay Safe.

876 scam

For several months, my elderly parents have been harrassed by someone (Terry Harti) saying that they had won $2.5 million in an "international lottery" . My parents waivered between believing the calls and hanging up--depending upon their state of mind. I finally called back the 876 # (as my parents were told it was toll free), because my father sounded like he was succumbing to the pressure. When I spoke to "Mr. Harti ", he had my parents' address and wanted to deliver the check to the house!. He also requested a photo of my father and a copy of his signature. Then he wanted a Western Union wire of $200. s/h for the check. I persisted that this was a scam and after several minutes the guy asked me for $150. to stop harassing my parents. He put me on hold for several minutes while he got his boss. Then asked me for $100. to stop harrassing my parents--"because he was poor". I was shook up by this experiience and wonder how to stop these type of calls. Now after investigating this, I'll probably be charged for the calls!I plan to contact the Feds. and my state AG. I will also call the my parents' phone co. to get some type of block.

Has anyone successfully argued against paying the fraudulent charges?

The 2 #s for this "international lottery" are (876).316-1275 and (876)373-6141.

Similar Scam

A citizen in our community (Brockport, New York) reported receiving a telelphone call from an accented male looking for someone with a name similar to that of the homeowner. The male claimed he was from "UPS" and that he had a package for the home from Las Vegas. The male said that in order to get the package, though, the homeowner would have to send a Western Union wire with money. Of course, the resident was suspicious as soon as this was mentioned, and asked to speak with a supervisor. The male gave the complainant a number, (876) 393-3919, which the complainant called back. The same accented male answered the phone.

Clearly after checking your site, this is part of the same scam behavior. We are notifying local residents via our web-posted Press Blotter regarding this scam.

Take care to never give out your personal identifying information, and never send money to someone you don't know.

876 scam

6:20 in the freaking morning some guy with a third-world heavy accent called, asked for ME specifically then, as best as I could determine said “Gold Rush Sweepstakes”, threw in the word Las Vegas (probably to get me to assume this was casino related, which it did) and said I had won 7.5 million dollars. My scam-o-meter hit red and I said “Bite Me’’ and hung up which is much nicer than he deserved waking up my achy body at that hour of the morning. He immediately called again and I let the machine get it.

I listened numerous times to him repeat the name of my supposed jackpot, the phone number and the distinctly blunt and demanding order to “call me. Goodbye.”

By the Lord’s protection the phone number *I* heard, each of the 5 times I listened to the machine, was 8 '6' 6-835-7979. Mind you, I did not believe there was any monetary reason to call, but I really like to nail people who try to scam money from the naïve, or little old ladies (of whom I am not admitting to being just yet) So I called that number and the nice receptionist from a gorgeous private country club in Pennsylvania answered ( I confirmed their reality on their website). They had never heard of this particular ‘sweepstakes’, wondered why he gave their number but, like me, figured it was a scam.

Then hubby emailed me—he had been researching it, too. Turns out the number is an 8 SEVEN 6 number—they want you to call back as it racks up your phone bill. (Google ‘876 scams’ and you will find 526,000 entries for it!)

Like me you probably will recognize any call like this as a scam, but just calling the number to hear the guy out so you can get more info to give the authorities will involve you in the scam of taking your money. So do tell your children old enough to answer the phone to not follow the caller’s very bold instructions. Most children (pre-teen and teen) are persons who play mostly fair and naturally don’t expect others to NOT play fair, plus most would love for their home to receive millions of dollars to help out Mom and/or Dad. They rarely have such suspicious minds as some of us!

If you have questions about any number left with you or told to you, you can go on http://www.whocalled.us/ and insert the number. The site can often tell you not only who it was, but the nature of the call (i.e. scam) and you can read messages from anyone else who has left a message detailing their encounter…purpose is for others to avoid the same unpleasant encounter.

It looks like they are using

It looks like they are using a new number for this scam. 767-275-4545. I was given this number after speaking to the "supervisor" of another telemarketing scam "Warranty Service Center." I demaned a phone number and this was what they gave me.

0018764365817

I have been receiving calls initially from a witheld number for approximately a month. I would answer the call and all i got was a man in a gruff voice saying hello. a couple of times then hangs up. My husband answered a couple of these calls for me as i was fed up. This still did not deter this man. I have been receiving these calls at all times of the day and night. This morning I had two witheld calls followed by a call from the subjected number, i am 100% sure that this is the same person calling. I must of had at least 10 calls from this number which i have now been ignoring but i am now receiving text messages from a man claiming to be from Jamaica who wants to be my friend. He states his name is Greg. What puzzles me is how has he got hold of my mobile number. Is it random. I am based in the UK.

I would be interested to read if anyone else has had a similar problem recently.

Same Problem

I'm having the same problem with someone called Greg from 876-578-8180. I'm thinking of changing my phone number but I'm still wondering how he got my current number. Very frustrating.

876-303-3747 Jamaica Telephone Co., Kingston, JM

I had a gentleman report to me today that he's been getting harassing calls from 876-303-3747. The first couple of times he answered, a guy named "Omar Johnson" told him that he had a package for him. The voice was described as kind of an arabic and robotic, deep voice. The gentleman told "Omar" that the package wasn't for him, as "Omar" had given the wrong address in the wrong city. In a follow up call, the gentleman told "Omar" that the package was not his and that he didn't want it. "Omar" responded by calling him a liar, and adding that he was going to get the package delivered to him.

Another number was associated with this complaint. The gentleman said that one of the calls was from 360-778-2603. He said that he talked to "Omar" at that number. The number has since been disconnected. Was it a cloned phone. Searchbug.com said is was a Skagit County Washington, cellular number.

Anyway, I'm posting this just in case there are any similar types of calls. I don't know what the scam is, but there's one in there somewhere, I'm sure. I hope the numbers I've typed in this message will google for others.

Mr Omar Johnson

My mother in the UK has been scammed by Mr Omar Johnson and a Mr Robert Johnson. They have been ringing her constantly telling her that she had won a lottery prize of over £1,000,000.00. In order for her to receive her winnings she had to moneygram amounts of money to them. They started by asking her for small amounts of money but once they knew that Mum believed them they upped the amounts. I eventually became aware of what was happening when I went round and heard them on the phone. They got very threatening because Mum had cancelled her last moneygram to them and clearly they were not happy ! Mum has lost over £7,000 to these scammers and she does not want others to get sucked in. Our police say that they cannot do anything because it is an international crime. The telephone number that she had to call back started with the numbers 0013 which is either the Cayman or the Virgin Islands.

Another number...876-414-3495

We are getting a call from a John Green saying we won $950,000 from some kind of directory raffle and we need to send $200 Western Union to an Orane Porter in Montego Bay, Jamaica. Phone number is 876-414-3495...

876-414-3495, John Green Scam Artist

A family member has also been contacted by this John Green from Jamaica. He has used various different titles, air line agent, custom agent etc.

Bottom line he is a crook. Don't buy into his crap.

Jamaica scam

876-419-1976

Caller from Kingston, Jamaica called several times stateing I had won 2 million dollars and they were going to ship it UPS. Would not stop calling, I returned call to the number on caller ID and the person that answered the phone had rude, vulgar comments to make after realizing I new it was a scam.
Please post this number for people to see.

876 scam - 1-876-561-5486

These "people" call my mother several times per day. They tell her that she's won money from a company called Global something. It varies from $500,000 to over $5,000,000. They tell her she has to pay a delivery fee via Western Union to get a check. The amount of the delivery fee varies from $100 to over $400. When she tells them she has no money to send they generally lower the amount. They've gone so far as to tell her to sell her food stamps to get the money. One stupid scammer even told her that he would pay half the amount. The scam always involves calling an 876 number. The last number she was given was in Kingston Jamaica. 1-876-561-5486. Thank God for Google so I can look this stuff up.

texting scam

so I just got a text message saying "please call me at 1-876-445-4030 it's urgent, thanks" It looks like the work (toll-free) number of a friend of mine so I didn't think twice and called. when the woman on the line turned out to be a stranger I hung up, then I remembered reading something about scams like that... crap.

scam

This type of scam can happen on your e-mails as well. It's called phishing. Someone sends you an e-mail pretending to be from the bank you're using. The mail looks real, they even put in the logo of the bank. They ask you for your account number and security code and anything else they might need, explaining that the bank lost your contacts or something...don't ever fall for it!

876-566-8067

My mother was charged $36.60 for an 8.8 minute call supposedly to Jamaica 1/11/2008, a call she has no recollection of and would like to dispute; but MCI, her then-long-distance company, with customer service agents having Caribbean accents (!), cannot tell us to whom this call was made, other than to Jamaica.
Am I understanding that some people are RECEIVING calls from these supposedly SCAM numbers and being charged for them? Or are charges applying only when a call originates from one's own telephone??
Has anyone reading this been scammed via this 876-566-8067 number?
Thank you!

I am a social worker at an

I am a social worker at an affordable housing building for seniors. One of my residents (over 80 years old) came to me with her phone bill which included 35 calls to Jamaica and Kingston which she never made. The total for the long distance charges was $188. The calls were made at all times in the day & usually were for 1 or 2 minutes. Her long distance carrier is Qwest. I called Qwest and the supervisor is going to call us back on Wednesday. Did you ever resolve your mother's problem or glean more info about it? Like your mom, my resident is charge for making the calls. Any advise when I talk with the supervisor?

scam

I too was a victim of these calls the thing is that i am jamaican and so i could pick up on the accent immediately. It is a shame that this is happening because people who do that give the rest of us a bad name. the number that contacted me was 7027654470 and then it linked to 8768486170. I know this because like a said i was born and raised in jamaica and just happened to move here. the funny thing is they told me i won 4.5 mil and they were from sum bank in LA.nevada. and that i won because i shopped at walmart, big mistake i dont shop at walmart. I am sorry for anyone who fell for this. one hint i can give is that if you call and the operator sounds remotely british or caribbean don't stay on the line. And if its too good to be true it isn't real.

1-876-832-1164

Aloha,

We live in Hawaii and just got a call today from "UPS" apparently with a package holding a check of $2.5 million dollars! Obviously sounded suspicious so we called his bluff and asked him his name, LEROY SMITH, from UPS in LAS VEGAS, NEVADA. We didn't even give him a chance to ask any more questions like our address or sending him money to release the check. We told him that we would contact him back, which he provided the number 1-876-832-1164. He sounded very unsure and unprofessional. I immediately came online to check the number to which I wasn't that 876 is Jamaica's area code. We've heard about these Scams out of the Caribbean. I don't see the number he provided listed here, but I really believe that it was a scam as well.

Be careful!

Had the same thing occur.

Had the same thing occur. Same un-educated personality saying they had a check for $250k and a bose system. told them they could keep it and they claimed he could not. Other point to be made when i called them back i got a VM and did not leave a message they then call back from a 876-394-0729 number. guess they had caller ID. I would definitely be aware of this scam.

(876) 560-4271 and (876) 804-3855

I received a call this afternoon from (876) 560-4271 a man saying that I won 5.5 million dollars from the Las Vegas lottery. When I told him that I don't live in Nevada, he said that I won b/c I make purchases on credit cards and pay bills on time. Although I have recently been to Las Vegas this seemed a little suspicious, so I started asking a lot of questions. He said that someone was on their way to my house in Hawaii with the check and the US Marshalls and FBI were coming along for protection b/c it was a large amount!! I told the person that I no longer live in Hawaii, so he said that I should give him my current address and the people will turn around and travel to my current residence, and that I would still receive the check today. I laughed a little b/c does this person even know the globe? When I asked which credit card was used for this drawing he said "your debit card". I responded with " Well if this is for paying my credit cards on time, how is that valid, b/c you don't make payments on the debit card" His response was "It is for making purchases and paying your bills on time". I asked for a phone number to call back and verify the information that he gave me and he gave me the # (876) 804-3855 POC Mr. Kootz. Needless to say, I did not give him my current address or call either of the numbers back, but I did check my accounts, and there was no unusual activity.

Jamaican scammers

Persons who have been scammed by persons calling from Jamaica (876), please get in touch with the United States Department of Homeland Security Immigration and Customs Enforcement Office. According to the story posted on this web site http://www.radiojamaica.com/content/view/5130/26/ ICE will be working with the Jamaican authorities.

When Robert Leeson called

When Robert Leeson called for my husband at 5:45 AM yesterday, I told him that my husband had been dead for four years. I immediately became eligible for the money (around $5.5 million)! To answer his statement of paying around $450 dollars at a Western Union, I told him that I had to sell my car, was wheel chair bound, and so poor that I am living in Government Assisted Housing. He suggested that my son, who has my power of attorney, contact the 876 phone number. I said that I have no control over what little money I do have, told him that the offer sounded too much like a scam, and hung up. He hasn't called back.

New Jamaica Scam phone number 876-842-4688

A Mr. Anthony Parkinson called me several time on my CELL PHONE of all numbers! I answered automatically the first time; he pretended there was a bad connection and wanted me to call him back. Fat Chance.
He called back several times, I did not answer, then he finally left a message (which I still have on my cell phone) calling me by name and asking me to call Anthony Parkinson at 876-842-4688. Reverse phone number search engines have no info whatsoever on this number.
I Googled the number and Phone Fraud until I found this site.
Be Warned.

Jamaican CRAP

Here's another couple of numbers they're using:
876 326 5310
876 867 9195

I've gotten alot of repetitive calls from both numbers, with "unknown" in between. Luckily my cell provider warns me when calling a number back that it will charge me X amount of dollars before completing the call.

Good luck everyone else who's being bugged by these jerks. I accidentally found this site when I decided to look up the 876 area code online to find out where the calls were coming from. I won't be answering them!

Scammers take THAT

I just got the same call that is being explained here. I confronted them telling them i know what they're doing and that i want in on it! He actually tried to recruit me! I played a long to try and find out how they're making their money. He's supposed to call me back with more instructions. I can't believe this type of thing is happening...

876 Scam!!!

Someone called my husbands cell phone 16 times in 40 minutes while he was gone, so I finally picked it up and a man who called himself Mr.Mason said he had a check for us and said he was with the United States Postal Service. Since my husband checks come from another state that are actually mailed with Fed Ex I didn't immediatly doubt the caller but thought it was odd that he had called over and over. I told him to just bring his check to the house and he claimed my husband would need to call first and gave me this number 876-530-0164. I thought this was suspicous and told him I would have my husband calland I hung up. He continued to keep calling every 2 minutes. Long story short when my husband called him back he said he had a check for him and that he would need to make a western union payment to get the money. He kept my husband on the phone a long time arguing and even threw in something about publishers clearing house, all the while claiming to be the post office. The numbers he called from came up 876-540-5797 876-418-3531 876-530-0164 and several restricted. Whats odd is they only called my husbands cell phone and he just recently got that number tranferred from at&t to verizon and I'm seeing a connection with new phone numbers with this scam when i look for others reports.

International Call Scam 876-303-7115 & 876-420-6397

I just got my Dads phone bill and it is over $300 due to calls made to these numbers. He is elderly and doesnt remember making the calls, but im sure he was returning a call to claim a "prize". Anyways, keep an eye out for these two numbers as well.

Adapting Scam

I just got a call, on my brand new cell phone - I've only given my number to 4 people. It's not posted online anywhere. Anyway, they got the number, have been spamming it, and when I picked up I was told I had 5.5 million dollars waiting for me at the Los Angeles airport. I hung up at that point. He called back, "why did you just hang up on me sir?" and I replied, "because you don't have 5.5 million dollars for me." I was contacted by the following numbers:
876.806.4108,
876.558.5583,
876.315.7856,
and following the 4th attempt the numbers were all blocked.

Just a FYI for all of you - they're still at it.

867 scam

Hello

I have been contacted by one of those low life Jamican scammers pretending to be my internet friend. He called me to chat and I stated I have no friends in Jamica and dont want any and hung up the phone.

Later in the evening I had over 20 calls from the same number and of course I never answered. He persisited and sent numerous text messages too plus has called another 8 times today. Here is the number the scammers are now using: 876-476-7582

Along with this is a telemarking scam too with the following number" 904-302-7532. Supposedly it is from some compnay called Global.

Mark

ABOUT THE 867 NUMBER...

yes it is great to hear you didn't get caught in a mess with those idiots. they played a very good scam w me. sent me a $4,000 dollar check and a very well written letter saying i won a lottery. i figured i enter the lottery a lot but i did look up the place. the bank told me it was a fradgulent check. it was a real check from global international sweepstakes. they said i won $250,000 dollars and to send them the $4,000 so they could deliver it. didn't make sense but it's crazy they knew my name and address. the scam was for me to give them the money when the check cleared and than the bank would have held me responsible they said for the money so i'd be out $4k and they could have possibly
