Cingular(now AT&T) "fewest dropped calls" myth debunked in new federal lawsuit
A new federal lawsuit1 in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California details how Cingular's advertising claims of being the carrier with the "fewest dropped calls" lured consumers to Cingular's service. The complaint explains how these advertising claims were made while Cingular was in fact one of the worst wireless providers in many major markets. At UCAN, Cingular(now AT&T) is one of the companies consumers complain of most. You can see UCAN's various actions against Cingular here and here. "According to Kaltwasser's complaint, filed in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, Cingular misrepresented the findings made by Telephia, a data provider for the telecommunications industry.
Cingular conducted a widespread ad campaign based on what it claimed was a study by Telephia that rated Cingular as having the fewest dropped calls of any wireless carrier in the country.
In fact, Kaltwasser alleges, Telephia actually concluded that Cingular did not have the fewest dropped calls in several major markets, including New York, Chicago, Houston and Los Angeles.
Moreover, independent studies by two other companies, J.D. Powers & Associates and Consumer Reports, found Cingular to be the worst or one of the worst carriers in dropped-call performance, Kaltwasser says."

EVER SINCE THE SWITCH (ATT&T and CINGULAR)
Give me a break… After about 8 months of dropped calls, no signal and poor reception I finally got the straight from AT&T/Cingular.
At my home, when Cingular was Cingular I got the best signal and call quality but when AT&T and Cingular did this merge everything took a turn for the WORST!!!
Call after call to customer service I was told that I had perfect coverage and should not be having call issues.
I told them that it started when the merge took place but never got anything resolved. They sent new firmware, hardware checks, told me to reset my phone every couple of days, basically nothing worked.
Meanwhile I started a company and signed on with T-Mobile for business phones. Perfect signal everywhere. No dropped calls, perfect all the way. EXCEPT… With T-Mobile I have NO ROLLOVER and my evenings start at 9pm instead of paying extra so my evenings start at 7pm with Cingular.
So… TO THE POINT. I finally found someone at Cingular to give it to me straight.
The cell site that I had been using for all the trouble free years with Cingular was actually leased from T-Mobile and when the merge took place with AT&T and Cingular they had to let go of the lease and there went my perfect signal.
I’m sure that this was done in many places as I once heard that Cingular leased many cell sites from many other companies, which actually is a great idea. This way it’s like have the best of every carrier no matter where you go. But… it the name of profitability, some BOZO made the choice to sacrifice a few, but was it really a few???
Well, it looks like I’ll have to transfer ALL my phones to T-Mobile. I guess my wife will not be able to start YAPP’IN until 9pm instead of 7pm.
Best of luck to all of you.
Terrible in Texas
I was using Virgin Mobile for a while, bad credit and low income were hindering me from getting a normal cell plan. Then I got on Cingulars family plan with my brother. It was (and I emphasize the word was) a much better service. Like I said it 'Cingular'. I live in a very rural area, so there have always been "weak spots" of course. Now, however, my service is getting increasingly worse. It is not unusual to have good signal, until I try to make a call. It is unusual to successfully make the call. There are no good places around or near my home to make a call. And, Dropped calls are much more common than successful ones. I do plan to switch ASAP, but I also (attempt to) use my phone for business, and I am not sure if i can take my number with me.
Sprint
I use Sprint, I was able to get a cheap plan using SERO.
AT & T dropped calls
Dropped calls big time - up north Minnesota ...I didn't have this problem last summer with Cingular and my "old" phone. After reading through some of these complaints, I have come to the conclusion that it isn't the phone I have. My new phone is supposed to be more powerful, so it must be the lack of towers/service (I thought they would have bought all the towers too). What happened to the towers?
I truly do not remember having a dropped call with Cingular. Now I start a conversation with someone (when up north) and anywhere from 2 seconds to 2 minutes...call is ended. I am self-ployed and need my phone!!!
Personally, I would not have Verizon either, my husband has it through his employer and he has used mine a few times. His does not even work at our home in Big Lake Township in Minnesota...unless he goes outside. It's interesting watching him in the rain and wind, trying to talk to a customer.
Unlimited Services
Well, if anyone is still reading this page. Here's one for you. Cingular (AT&T) offers a family plan of unlimited texting/MMS for 30.00. I have 3 teen agers. Who's laughing now? We average over 10,000 mesages a month. Got to make the service work for you and stick it to the "man".
Verizon does the same silly
Verizon does the same silly
Cingular Wireless is by far the worst cell phone carrier
Well let me just say that we have a family business plan, my mother, father and I. All 3 of us have experienced nothing but negativity ever since we have had Cingular (we have changed carriers and are in a battle with them). All of us have had non-stop dropped calls and my father has had to switch telephones on 3 separate occasions, which were complete disasters. They state this charge then credit will appear after a few billing cycles which my father refused (and won those battles). We also had a mix up with which credit card was used because we take turns paying the bill. My mother paid accidentally with my cc & I found out about 30 hours later and tried to get Cingular to reverse that business transaction which they said no problem at first, but of course I had to call back on a weekday. Then the nightmare began. When I called back they said I would have been able to catch the charge within the first 24 hours (and granted this was the weekend of Christmas and thankfully I was checking my online statement). There was nothing they could do. Elementary business wasn't even in their minds when you think of credits and debits. So we ended up paying with 2 cc's and I had to dispute charge with my bank. We had a credit of almost 600$ then the following billing cycle a credit of $300. Then when everything was said and done, all charges were taken care of (thank you Huntington), they ended up turning our phones off with a balance due of 60$, all in less than 1 months time! Our previous bill stated credit of almost 300, less than about 2 weeks later we received a balance due of $60. I specifically had called them up numerous times to check on balance and make sure everything was ironed out. I spent over 10 hours of my time trying to straighten that mess around. The $60 bill came on a Friday and our phones were shut off that following Monday. When they disconnected our phones, we couldn't even reach them to pay a measley 60 bucks. Another thing when they disconnected our phones, we never received a bill as to see how the bill ended up over $60.00, they sent us just the amount due. Also, when we were disconnected we were never able to check online and see the transaction activities or phone bill. Everything was disconnected. And from my experience when other carriers shut your phone off you still can contact customer service to pay the portion. It's hilarious because 3 adults and nobody was contacted.
Another thing that I have had to deal with is all the extra charges that I have found on every single bill that we have received. I have become a professional cell phone bill reader because of Cingular. I have had to call on so many separate occasions over their bogus charges or not blocking extra features such as text messaging and internet connections. Every single time I called the customer service rep would state that they had blocked this or that and we would receive a credit only to find credits not applied and features not blocked. The biggest pain was the AT&T feature media pack bundle that was on there every single month and after cancellation after cancellation of that the reps would always say it was getting online and hitting a submit feature and that it wasn't Cingular's fault.
I have spoken to so many nice representatives but also have had my fair share of idiots that don't know a thing or those that are rude. My father has spoken to one that taunted him and laughed at him because she didn't say her name and he didn't know it. Exact words, "haha you don't know my name". The reps also like to transfer your calls to the wrong departments and then those operators transfer you to other wrong departments. Another good one is when you want to speak to a supervisor, cross your fingers because you will more than likely get their voicemail and never receive a call back. You can never ever get higher than a supervisor and they are usually just as stupid.
I have dealt with Sprint and was not happy with them but compared to Cingular I miss them! We have Verizon now and are extremely satisfied with their service up to this date. We also encountered a problem porting our phone numbers over, which legally we are entitled to but that was such a minor issue, we didn't worry about it. We lost bussiness because of Cingular and to top it off, Cingular has sent us the final bill which is almost 1000$. It's amazing to see how they charged each line disconnection fees (oh and btw with the disconnection over 60$ we were going to have to pay a reconnection fee) but each line is 175$ and then I haven't even looked at the final bill just to see what 'extra' charges are on there. Also, in 1 months time because we didn't pay the final bill, we have a $100 late fee. It's a mess. But we will be fighting them tooth and nail and in reality they owe us more for all the aggravation, time & energy because of their screw ups. We were loyal customers and paid our bills every single month.
And the icing on the cake, they laugh at the public utilities commission and other threatened lawsuits. They don't care and are not a customer oriented business. They violated our contract more times than I can count which technically we are not at fault. THEY ARE!
And note this is my own personal complaint out of 3 professional, highly educated adults. They have their own horror stories to tell about Cingular.
Attorney
We found an attorney that has taken our case for free against Cingular. The Attorney told us that Cingular dropped our contract because they disconnected our service in such a short duration of time (within days) and everything else is irrelevant. Nice to see that some Attorney's are out there are good :) I will follow up with the final outcome.
Attorney
Any chance your atty might want another case against cingular?m lemme know please. thx.
Rx signal levels
I noticed that about 6-8 months ago, the call quality started getting extremely bad. At first I attributed this to my handset. Perhaps a bad antenna connection, corrosion, RoHS, etc.... Having to ask someone to repeat themselves several times gets old VERY quickly. So... after some cleaning, and touchup... ...nothing....
So.. I decided to switch handsets. This involves simply switching sim cards. Well.. That didn't help at all!
Since I'm already all in... I decided to look at the _real_ signal level. In the past, I was very happy with cingular's performance. I've been using their service since well, they were called Pacific Bell Mobile Services!
In my area, one can see the signal level hover around -100dBm, where in the past, I would typically see -70dBm. I know this since, back then, I did some informal site surveys. Those surveys showed fairly signal at around -70 to -88dBm. At the time my testbench device was made, the typical commercial grade rx would pull signal out of -110dBm tops. Of course, at that level, you'll probably get a dropped call.
With the signals just measured about 10 minutes ago, on the same test hardware, in the same physical location, I barely got -100dBm in most areas. The peak observed value was something like -90 dBm!
So, what gives???
I want my 30dBm margin back!

Att freaking sucks
I had att for 2 months and it really sucked but t mobile also sucks.Because when i had t mobile i had a dropped call everyday and with att it was the same thing. I live in east la california so t mobile it was the same thing that att but the thing i liked about att was that it got signal iside were i work in a clinic it only had one bar but i was still able to make and receive calls and yeah i admit it call quality was kinda crappy but hey i could still call that's what matters. And when i had t mobile iside were i work it said no signal and everytime i tried to make a call it said call failed. and then i had to go outside for i could get a decent signal and call quality was crappy also even if it had full bars. so i think everyone should chooose whatever suits them. i personally would rather get att instead of t mobile cause it works were i am the most at my house and at work.
ATT Just Plain sucks the worst ever
I can’t wait for my contract to be over problem after problem with ATT never would use them such a shame cingular is gone lost my rollover minutes over charges nasty customer service I mean nasty they offer nothing but guaranteed dropped calls and lies don’t do it
AT&T overcharges
I have been with cellular one, cingular for 10 years with 7 phones on my plan. Suddenly in the last 3 months my phone bill has gone from approx. $200 per month to over $700. Talking to customer service at AT&T is like speaking to a mindless drone. No one can tell me why it has suddenly risen, they promise to remove the overcharges and the next month, same thing. I am switching to Verizon, I sadly cannot recommend Cingular/AT&T to anyone anymore, and I was their biggest fan previously. Just another example of a failing corporation taking over a successful one and destroying that one also. I've seen it often in the corporate world.
Giving up on ATT/Cingular
I've been a Bellsouth/Cingular/ATT customer for 10 years. Since the ATT merger the coverage area is now HORRIBLE!!!!! There are long stretches (60 miles) of interstate highway where for years I got a decent signal but now get "No Service" or "Emergency Service Only." On a drive up the East Coast I went for TWO DAYS within the coverage area map with no signal at all. I had to check messages from my hotel phones. It does not help to stop and get out of the car; still no signal. My contract is up and so I'm swithing. Maybe to Verizon? It canNOT be any worse.
wireless services and overall corruption
if you believe verizon canNOT be any worse, then continue on with your cellphone services. After 5 years of no late payments, being charged 3 to five times for the same minute due to dropped calls and overall disatisfaction with cell phone service rate hikes, my phone is being shut off by ATT today, unless a sign up again for more of the same at double the cost for half the miutes. I guess a person has to ask themself how did we survive without cell phones in the past. I'd have to say,"just fine".I will not have a cell phone again. There are enough out there destroying our enviroment to make corporates richer and "national security" more invasive to get YOU the boogety man. It wont be until every one makes this choice that these crooked companies will shape up, change their company names, and offer honest services that are reliable and at least 95% more worthwhile. It's not just ATT, its Amerika, the land of the greed. As long as their doing it to anyone for the $ its all good...........just lie if you get caught, but make sure you have enough $ to support the lie so that you might only get a slap on your scapegoats wrist. My advice to all is to watch "loose change" 'zeitgeist" & their links before deciding on a new phone. You may determine that a cell phone is not that important compared to the major horrors of our times. Cell free & GR8FL
Sprint, Cingular, and now AT&T
I switched to Sprint many years ago with my then girlfriend now wife, I had the same phone for years, called it the TANK. It would take any beating I gave and still work strong. Well, at the end of last year, my wife and I started receiving letters that our phones would no longer be supported by their network. Being one that doesn't like changes we waited and more and more letters started coming. So, we finanlly went and purchased new phones in February. Since we don't change phones much, we wanted the very best so we could keep them for years. We purchased the RAZOR V3i. Well, we have always had insurance, just in case ( One of my previous phones fell out of my pocket while I was on the motorcylce). I was informed that because it was such a new phone they wouldn't put insurance on it yet. Well four month's go by and we finally call to see if we are able to receive insurance. WE are informed that we had a 30 day grace period to get it and now we're screwed. Not only that, but the service as I have read from everyone else, as I have experienced, sucks tremindously. My wife and I will be changing to another server as soon as our contract is up.
Dropped calls and Loss of Data
Yep.. same here in Baltimore...Since Cingular had changed to ATT, I have dropped calls, limited service reception, and also my phone blinks out and I lose my pics and my phone #'s. Now I don't want to start any conspirocy theories but I know that through sat TV they can send out a signal that will zap any illegal smartcards inserted into consoles I wonder if Att can do the same to smart cards in cell phones (especially ones that have the cingular name on it) and force people to get new phones specifically through ATT stores. Just wondering I'm on this page because I just had another instance of losing data...
AT&T Cingular combined service dropped calls / no service
I have five different phones on my family plan. I can not get service in my home, or around the home most days. I am .37 miles from the tower. According to AT&T, "the tower is close enough and sginal are fine". One phone is used in Dayton. Before we renewed service with AT&T they checked the Dayton address and claimed "with the new G3 service you will ahve no problems in Dayton." There is no signal at all (ZERO) for about 1/2 mile around the use. Their service is worthless for this user and I will continue to try to get out of my contract.
Since AT&T joined w Cingular
Since AT&T joined w Cingular I loose at least 4 call per day. If you are thinking of Cingular AT&T......DONT DO IT!!!!! Your basically going back to the stone ages of cell service......it really does suck.......
Dropped Calls ? How about a $4,000 dollar PDA bill
I think this subject pales in comparison to The SCAM/AT&T Cingular is running with their PDA. They casually mention a price per kilobyte transeferred for us of their PDA outside the country. The average customer (Me) has no idea what this amounts to in dollars and cents. Well let me tell you. $4,000 or approximatly $255.00 per 60 minutes of PDA use. This is further enhanced because the PDA device they sell you is so "clunky" that you have to pick the page you want to download several times to get it right. (In the meantime sever wrong pages are downloading and you are being charged for it). My consolation when I went into the Cingular office? They related a recent customer that came in with a $9,000.00 one month PDA bill. I could go on about how they try to extort the money after the fact etc. but there is a pending investigation that I am involved with concerning this matter.
Sorry but this is much worse than the "Dropped Calls Issue"
Any lawyers want an easy Class Action suit???
Give UCAN a call
Hi Duped,

AT&T Cingular dropping fiasco
Same here in Philadelphia. We "upgraded" from older Samsung and Nokia units to the Sync model when ATT took over from Cingular's plausible service, and since then have had dropped calls every single day. Fully one third of our attempts to call are dropped or never connect to start with. I have changed my aswering message on my phone to contain a warning that ATT sucks, and I recommend all of us with the same problem do so.
ATT Stinks
I changed from T-Mobile to Singular 2 years ago because I could not get T-Mobile signals at my new home. Singular was great until the switch to ATT. Now I keep getting dropped calls from many locations. I am dissapointed and very unhappy. I thought the mighty ATT was supposed to be so wonderful. How can you take over a company and use their equipment that worked so well and now it stinks. I smell a rat somewhere.
Cingular to AT&T
I have had Cingular for over four years and I had never had a problem with it. I would get reception at school and at my house, but after the AT&T change my signal has been failing where before it was great. For example, now after I've been inside a building and I go outside it takes sometimes over 20 minutes for me to get a signal. And after I get a signal it comes and goes. It's so frustrating!!! I tried to turn off my phone, remove the SIM card, press end call and even just turning off my phone for like 5 to 10 minutes and it still wouldn't work. I think that as soon as my contract is over I'll change to another phone carrier. I used to like the service Cingular had but since AT&T took over my signal isn't good.
Cingular to ATT
I started with ATT about 6 1/2 years ago and had real problems when they were bought by Cingular. Eventually I gave in and bought a Cingular GSM phone since it was obvious the old ATT TDMA network was not being supported. The GSM service has been pretty good until the switch to ATT. I now drop call several times a day. Even when making calls from my house with full signal strength showing on my phone I get dropped. I assumed the switch this time would be no problem since I did not think they were changing the network. Does anyone know what is happening?
Fewest call fiasco
Well I worked for AT&T (then Cingular) for three years ending August of 2006. To give you the inside story about this crap when the Telphia report came out the area that AT&T had the fewest dropped calls was actually downtown San Francisco, roughly a 13 block radius (per the report) We were weren't supposed to know this and all customer service reps were specifically told not to quote anything from the report, nor were we to disclose the name of the company. They had this information posted in their customer rep information system CSP. This was a huge deal and we had this come up in our weekly team meetings (they call huddles) over the course of the next month. Then the information mysteriously disappeared from CSP. They told us to proudly support the ads but not to disclose anything. So there ya go, now it finally got dropped, just like there calls. I mean you work for a company for 3 years and can't get a signal in your own building. (I worked at the Fayetteville NC call center) I paid for cellphone service the entire time I worked there and did not want to get their terrible service. HAH!
MOST Dropped Calls
More than 2 dropped calls on average per day with AT&T - need I say more?
Check out: http://mostdropped.blogspot.com/
Cingular service after the AT&T takeover
Ive been with Cingular for a few years now and really not had to many complaints... always had decent signal coverage at home and at work as long as i was at my desk (most of the building doesnt get signals due to building structure)...
However, immediatly following the AT&T changeover i started noticing horrible signal quality... right away i was hearing echo's and just dropped calls or calls that might not drop but just completely horrible reception where you couldnt understand a word someone was saying... Where I could before have a good quality connection and conversation at my desk i now not only have to go outside to even get a signal, but the signal is still crap while standing outside! What is the deal?? One co worker suggested it has to do with the heatwave goin on we've all been experiencing but i dont believe that. When i go to make my next payment im going to tell them if they dont get their act together by the following payment im switching and if they try to charge me for breaking the contract i will take them to small claims court for services not rendered....
HA HA, no one would believe me.
I work for Enhanced Wireless , the largest exclusive retailer of Sprint. I read the research for the "cingluar fewest dropped calls" and new it was not true from the start. To all the people who called me a liar and to all the cingular employees who harassed me i say HA HA HA. While all cell phone compaines have their flaws, Cingular (AT&T) was by far the worst i have ever had, and i had ever single carrier to compare against our service. Stay far away from T-Mobile and Immix and AT&T. As far as Verizon, they are good. If people dont like the Sprint service (which we share most of their towers by the way) I always send them their. I don't care what anyone says no one can beat Sprints Wireless data service.
thats alll!
AT&T Now forced to remove this FALSE CLAIM!
Effective immediately!!!...
AT&T is forced to remove their "Fewest Dropped Calls" claim from all advertising. Test Results, Legal Issues, and Your Common Sense have finally won out.
Never mind the fact that 1) the call has to connect in order to be counted as a dropped call. (...and Verizon Wireless has held consistently scored best in connections & dropped calls for years now)
...and 2) The shameful amount of "cherry picking" the data that Cingular/AT&T had to perform to make the claim in the first place made it tantamount to a "Bald Faced Lie"!!! And everyone in the industry knew it!
I just switched to ATT from
I just switched to ATT from Verizon and in my first month I had more dropped calls than I had in probably 4 years with Verizon. What a mistake it was to switch. Plus they over charged me for my phone that was supposedly on sale. It was on sale until my receipt printed out and then I realized that they charged me $75 more than what the offer stated. After waiting in the store for 45 minutes before a salesperson became available to help correct this issue, I seriously hate cell phone companies. All of them. They are all equally terrible companies.
i agree
people who argue for the companies belive bush had nothing to do with the bigger horrors of our times.
Just switched to AT&T
If you're still within your first 30 days, you can cancel and avoid the $200.00 per phone Early Termination Fee. Dropped calls don't go away!
AT&T Dropped calls
I had the SIM chip replaced in my Palm Treo 650 today. I replaced it at the request of AT&T's Customer Care people. I even had a dropped call while talking to their employee. I am getting dropped calls and a lot of static during conversations. I live in Manteca, Ca. and at or near home is the only place the problems seem to occur. They have told me to turn off my phone more often, remove the battery and SIM chip and that my problem is because there so few towers in my area. The problem has only been happening during the last two months.
If AT&T has the network with the fewest dropped calls, then I am getting all of the drops.
After replacing the SIM chip and doing all of the other things they asked, there is no change in my service quality.
I found this web site while trying to see if I was alone with these problems. Thanks!
AT&T Dropped calls
I live in Naperville, IL where there seem to be towers on every corner. I also have AT&T (formerly Cingular) as my cell provider. I have the same problem of dropped calls. I rarely have a phone conversation where my call DOESN'T drop. I cannot use my phone for business for that reason. Every call I make I have to tell them I have Cingular (AT&T) so the call might get dropped - I'll call right back if that happens. Anyone I tell that to seems to completely understand. I also receive calls from my sales reps out in the field. Those calls get dropped all the time - I ask them if they have Cingular (AT&T) and they say "Of Course!".
