Consumer Alert - DirecTV Complaints On Rise
UCAN has received many complaints about DirecTV from disgruntled consumers. If you're a victim of DirecTV, please file an online complaint with UCAN's Fraud Squad. If you signed up for a bundled AT&T / DirecTV package in California, you may also want to file a complaint with the California Public Utilities Commission at https://ia.cpuc.ca.gov/cimsapp/
Among the abuses reported to UCAN and elsewhere on the Internet are:
Misleading advertising - DirecTV entices new viewers with ads for low prices in big print while hiding a multitude of fees, planned rate changes and other terms in print too small to read.
ETF - DirecTV locks consumers into a two-year contract with a $480 early termination fee without disclosing the terms or even its existence. DirecTV, often without notice or authorization, then charges the consumer's credit card or debit card (tied to a checking account) for the ETF plus hundreds more in equipment fees when the consumer cancels DirecTV.
Rebate confusion - In order to obtain a promotional rate, customers sometimes have to submit a rebate. Customers who submit the rebate form after installation may be charged full price for their service for up to two months. Those who fail to return the rebate within 60 days of an order are charged the full price indefinitely – even if DirecTV failed to adequately inform them of the need to mail the form.
Charging for "free" services, installation and upgrades - The company advertises “free” installation and upgrades such as an HD receiver, DVR receiver or premium channels such as HBO and Starzz. In fact, customers may be required to pay monthly fees for the equipment. The premium channels are offered as a free trial that automatically converts into a paid subscription.
Contract extensions - DirecTV not only requires customers to agree to an extended contract at the beginning of service, but attempts to extend those terms even further. The company extends the length of contracts when customers require equipment repairs, upgrade equipment or move.
Undisclosed financing requirements - DirecTV fails to disclose that the company’s least expensive package of $29.99 per month is only available to customers who meet certain financing conditions and agree to have the costs automatically charged or debited.
Protection plan - Many customers are not aware they have been signed up a $5.99 monthly "protection plan" which DirecTV may charge $10 to cancel.
Non-return of deposit - DirecTV requests a customer's Social Security Number to run a credit check. Those who do not provide their SSN or those who do not pass the credit check may be required to pay a $200-$300 deposit to get service. Those who cancel service prior to the end of their contract lose part of the deposit and may also be charged cancellation fees.
Misleading promises of cash back - DirecTV ads show promises of cash back from $50 to $200 for referrals or moving, but consumers do not get any cash. Instead, they may get a $5 or $10 bill credit over several months.

locals
I will be an unhappy camper if I lose my local channels
DIRECTV HD
What a surprise to learn that, if you have an HD TV that has 720p, 720i or 1080i capability (all HD resolutions), but no HDMI connector (required only for 1080p), DIRECTV's newer receivers are only able to supply a non-HD resolution of 480i. This is because their newer receivers no longer provide "component video" signals to your TV set, so if you do not have a fairly new TV with an HDMI connector, you can't get High Definition pictures from DIRECTV. It isn't clear whether DIRECTV can even supply the HD resolution of 1080p that is only provided via an HDMI cable. Of course, the installation technicians will repeatedly lie to you and try to tell you that your TV is not really high definition, but that is just not true. If your TV set does not have HDMI. then in order to enjoy the benefits of HD from DIRECTV, you must either purchase/lease a DVR with "Component Video" (monster cable) output, or buy a new TV. "Deception" seems to be the company motto.
Direct TV scam you into new contract without your knowledge
I have been with the Direct TV for over three years. Last summer, I purchased refurbished H21 HD receiver from eCost.com with the understanding I would own it, since there is no written in the item description stating I was purchasing a leased item. Anyway, it was good deal and I need it to replace the regular receiver in my 3rd room (I have two HDs in other rooms). So I activated the HD receiver over the phone. It was quick and took only 10 minutes for the HD signal to show up. The lady on the other end of the phone was very helpful in setting this thing up but said nothing about the status of my contract. This year I've decided to combine TV/Internet/Phone into one package so I called Direct TV to cancel the service. To my surprise, not only I had to return the receiver I thought I purchased to own, but also they are charging me $300 for early cancellation fee though I had been their customer for over three years! I argued with the customer service that I would never agree with the 2-year extension if I was informed of it during the activation. Finally they sent me to their Property Retention Department and this rude-talking reps told me that this 2-year automatic extension is in the service agreement when I signed up their service. This really pissed me off. This clearly is a scam. They dump the cheap HD receivers to the market (labeled as refurbished without disclosing the truth they were leased items) and bait the existing customer to hook them up for contract without their acknowledgement. The worst part of it is you can't stop them from charging you since they have my credit card on file. I am sure that I am not only one into this. I am going to file a complaint to BBB and may be my state's attorney general.
Ridiculous
For all cable consumers, DTV, DISH, TIME WARNER, COMCAST, which ever it may be, remember it's a luxury getting pissed off about television is ridiculous. As I've read through all complaints I have one thing to mention 'YOU'VE ALL BROUGHT IT UPON YOURSELVES'. There's a little something that we must all read before negotiating and that is TERMS AND CONDITIONS! If your bill is too high or feel to oppose company policies it's as simple as not signing up for services.
Request your own rebate for signing up???
Hey look. Why would DirecTV require someone who signs up for their discount promotional ad to send in a rebate request in order to get the discount? I signed up for DirecTV's promotional ad, but did not get the discount because I did not "request" the discount for failing to send in the rebate request. Huh? Why doesn't DirecTV just give the discount automatically when you sign up for the promotional ad? You have to make a separate request? It's probably because they hope you fail to make the request on time so they get to pocket the extra money from you. What a scam. It doesn't bother them either.
Realistic?
You must work for then since you are advocating cooperation’s taking advantage of the consumer.
good assumption
I have a degree in Psychology, and no I dont work for such corporations. I am currently in contempt being a U-Verse customer and came about this site to make a final decision regarding Directv. However after reading all these complaints I figured I'd be best off staying with my current provider, although I must state that I do stand firm on what I mentioned. In other terms, everyone should read the side-effects before swallowing a pill.
Brought it on ourselves? Really?
You comment "you've all brought it on yourselves" is ludicrous. Imagine going to your local Honda dealer and ordering a new 2011 model Accord. You see one just like it in the showroom, test drive it, and ultimately settle on a price, agreeing to buy the car. Honda turns around and says, "we don't have the color you want in stock available at this dealership, but we can get it for you by next week." You say OK and leave. Next week Honda calls you and you go to the dealership to pick up your car. However, when you arrive, you notice it has no seats. The folks at the dealership say to you, "you didn't specifically mention anything about seats when you placed the order and so that will be another $1500 if you want them." Sound like bait and switch? If Honda did that, it would be. That is exactly the sort of thing DirecTV is doing to customers, but with equipment, promised free services, etc. DirecTV is violating the terms of an agreement they used to get you in the door to make the sale, plain and simple. How did consumers bring that upon themselves, again?
qwest direct tv scam in spokane washington
I too have become a recent victim of this rebate scam, i agreed to the 34.99 plan, when i recieved my first bill it was 83 dollars, when i called qwest to ask why they told me that i needed to talk to direct tv even though my bill comes from qwest, i was transfered, directv then tells me my beef was with qwest and transfgeres me back.... i ask to speak to a billing superviser whom informes me that i need to go online and complete a rebate form by sighning into there website and creating an account. then i tell him that i am being charged 10 dollars for hd wich was advertised as free along with the dvr and an additional standard reciever, i was told up to 4 recievers for free....they are charging me 6 dollars for the reciever and 7 dollars for the dvr. all was supposed to be part of the 3499 price. now they tell me its extra and they will have to review the recording of my order call and get back to me. if my original price is not honored i will too call the bbb and the attourny general and also join any class action lawsuit there is regarding false advertising and bait and switch contracts. however if the fix the issue i will log back on here and let everyone know. if not i will also cancle my qwest services as i have already fullfilled all of my qwest contract terms, then i will blog blog blog on every news channel website facebook and twitter account i can find, what a pain in my keester this has been
Illiterate people
If you would get a education and learn how to read and spell, maybe you would have figured out the policy and restrictions.
Illiterate person
In reply to the MORON who said, "If you would get a education....." MORON you are lecturing on learning how to read and spell yet you overlooked your own lack of education..... It would be AN EDUCATION. Not a education. Don't make fun of people when you do the same thing you stupid, useless, loser who has nothing better to do than pick on others instead of admitting you are the illiterate one.
qwest returns my calls
qwest finally returns my call, they inform me that they will fix my first months bill, however instead of it being 3599 like the brochure they mailed me said it will be 42 dollars instead, it beats the 83 dollars they attempted to hose me for but i am still pissed about the bait and switch routine. when my contract is up i will never use directv or qwest again. first of all directv is a scam artist company as anyone can see by the sheer volume of complaints and qwest should have had a legal team that saw this from the get go. i have never had a problem with qwest in the past regarding billing but you only have to pick my pocket once. there really should be a law against rebate programs, i have never once gotten what the rebate said it was going to be, the fine print should be illegal as well, when you go to the grocery store and buy a 99 cent twix bar and you go to the counter to pay they never add on a 5 cent stocking fee,10 cent restocking fee, 7 cent handling fee, 11 cent display fee, or an additional parking lot usage fee, this kind of hiddin theft after you sighn up is plain and simple fraud. period
Unauthorize charges by dish network
I cancelled my dish network service before the contract date, which obviously means that I would be subject to early cancellation fee. I gave the representative the address where I would like to receive the box (in order to return the equipment) and final bill. Days later I never received the box, I then took the time to call them to figure out why I never received the box, apparently, they entered the wrong address on their system. I asked the representative to correct the address so I can receive the box, what was disturbing to me was that the representative was so incompetent that had I not ask what address they had on the system as the mailing address for the final bill/notice then it would have remained the same wrong address. Approximately a week later I received the box, which I immediately returned with the equipment. Three days later I called to verify that they received the equipment and a final bill was mailed out (the representative did indicate that once they receive the equipment I would receive a final bill/notice). At the time of I called they did not receive the equipment, two days later my debit card was charged.... My question is why? I did everything I was suppose to do, unlike the incompetent representative to provide customers with sound information. I am not disputing that I owe dish network. From my experience with early termination fees, I receive a bill then I make a payment. This is not what occured with dish network. The representative I spoke to regarding the unauthorized charge, later inform me that they received the equipment a day after I called to verify and thats not it, when I asked about the final bill she said it was mailed out (guess to what address, the wrong address that they had on their system that I asked the representative to correct). Now not only that I never received a final bill, even if the bill was sent out on the same day they received the equipment it was impossible for me to receive the bill because it was over the weekend. When I explained this to the supervisor, he said that they are not obligated to send me a physical bill. Really? I did end up speaking with Miss S. Lopez the "executive" (above the supervisor), whom I thought was more incompetent than the first representative. She was indignat and unwilling to listen. The biggest kicker was that I stayed 50 mins on the phone with dish network and got nowhere, I then called my bank to dispute the charges (as it was pending) and the bank representative informed me that is was charged 20 mins ago (which means during the time dish network had me on hold, they charged my card).
Cricket
I made the mistake of using the same password for my cricket account that I did for some online accounts. I had to disclose my password to Cricket Tech support when having issues with there service and lo and behold these online accounts were hacked.
Indeed an article worth
Indeed an article worth reading for. Great choice of topic and the content are brief and concrete. It really help my research.

DirecTV keeps your cc on file in case you don't pay!
BUYER BEWARE!!! I just got off the phone with DirecTV. I was ordering a HDDVR receiver to replace my HD receiver. I was willing to pay the $99 for the upgrade and a handling fee of $26 as well as committing to a 24 month agreement. After completing the order, I was transferred to another representative to verify my purchase and was told the conversation would be recorded. The first few statements, I was agreeable to. Then, he started telling me that DirecTV would keep my credit card on file and if I didn't fulfill the new 24 month commitment, my credit card would be charged. If I didn't return the equipment, my credit card would be charged. I told the representative that I had been a customer of DirecTV for 15 years and had never failed to pay my bill or keep equipment. I told him I wanted to purchase the new receiver, but I didn't want them to keep my credit card on file. That was not an option. Nada...zilch...no go. It is a requirement. He said I could use a different credit card. I then said, "Are you telling me if I don't agree to let you keep my credit card on file, I cannot purchase a new receiver?" He said, that is correct. I canceled the order and asked him to remove my credit card from their records. I will go without the upgrade of the new equipment. Buyers...please beware of what this can and will do to your bank account if you are late paying your bill or, God forbid, you got sick and didn't pay your bill. These guys are going to sock it to you because they've got your credit card on file! Then you've got the bank to deal with. TV is not that important, is it?
Direct TV doesnt tell the Truth
I work at DISH Network and absolutely believe in our product and pricing strategy, it is the best in the industry. We offer free HD for Life to new and EXISTING customers. We offer free HD equipment upgrades for new customers and EXISTING customers with good credit history for DISH. We have live customer service agents 24 hours a day who can provide you with pricing, package information, and technology advice. Did you know DIRECTTV is tied up in court litigation to face charges of “unfair sales practices”, including “hiding fees, planned rate changes, and terms that call for automatic renewal”? For more information visit DISH’s website at http://www.dish.com and then call DISH’s excellent customer service staff at 1.800.333.3474. You can file a complaint with the BBB or the Attorney General’s office. If you are DISH network subscriber contact me directly and I would be glad to look into your concern personally!
Your push for Dish Network
I have recently been a victim of DIRECTV. I was a DISH customer for more than ten years and very satisfied with one exception: I wanted GMC and it wasn't available at the time from DISH. When my DISH contract ran out I noticed a substantial increase in my bill. Instead of contacting DISH i bought into the lies of DTV. My bundle is through ATT. It was a representative from ATT/DTV that blatantly lied to me 3 times. I asked specifically if I would be required to sign a contract and was told 3 times that there was no contract. The availability of local networks was misleading. I wasn't told that DTV did not have my local stations available. I have filed a DNS waiver 3 times and have been denied with the exception of some national PBS feed and NBC. we are missing the opening of the NFL season tonight because I don't get the network.
As for DISH, I was, like I said, a satisfied customer. When I called DISH yesterday to see about taking advantage of special offers I was told that because it was less than 90 days since I cancelled my DISH that I wasn't eligible for any special offers. In addition, I was told that I have an outstanding balance of $16.17. I got confirmation that DISH received their equipment back; my bill is through ATT and paid up to date, so...how could I possibly owe DISH. When I tried to get clarification, the representative informed me that she didn't have access to my account. Well if she didn't have access to my account, how did she know I owed $16.17. She tried to transfer me to customer service representative when I asked where I was calling because I was having issues with understanding her. She told me, "The Philippines". That was the end of that conversation.
I still want to switch back, but want to make sure my rights with DTV. Beings I've only had their service for 2 months, I will probably be charged a $480 early cancellation fee. They will have to take me to court to get it. I hope they have my conversation taped as they warn you about for "quality assurance" so they can hear the lies that were told to me.
You say that you can be contacted directly (something I have been told is not possible by reps. from many different companies). I would like to be contacted by you directly. How can I make this happen when there is no information in your comment?
Durect TV
As far as Im concerned, DIrect TV is breaking their contract with me to provide Fox Network(channel 28) in our area. It has been taken off the air because of contract disputes. Why should I pay by bill when I have to go to the neighbors or a bar to watch the NFL Playoffs and all my favorite shows?
charging for free services
We called our state Attorney General. We are looking into filing a class action lawsuit against Directv. I've been a Directv customer for 15 years, but it's about to end. GET READY DIRECTV. PAYBACK IS COMING!! YOU'RE GOING TO SINK FASTER THAN THE TITANIC!
class action
My information is to much to write but we must stop these darn crooks they just cleaned out my bank acct for early cancellation with out my permission using my debit card THEY HAVE GOT TO BE STOPPED
KEEP ME IN TOUCH PLEASE
MIKE LEE
Use debit card only
I cancelled my Direct TV service early as I lost my job and was still under a contract. Long story short, they offered me 3 months free, I took up the offer, might find a job between then, and then cancelled after the 3 free months was up. I knew that I would have to pay a early termination fee as I had several months left over on my contract. I'm billed thru Qwest phone service (bundled package) and was told that when I cancelled my Direct TV service the balance owed would be placed on my debit/credit card on file with them. I promptly cancelled that debit card with my bank (I reported it lost) and received a new one with a new number that Direct TV didn't have so they would be forced to mail me a final bill. But they still zapped me and charged for the the "3 free months" I received and it was billed on this month's phone bill. Along with that, I was charged for service during the "3 free months".
This is why I'm glad I work
This is why I'm glad I work for a more reputable company (DISH Network). Our new customer promotions are much easier on the customer - it should be easy to switch, not a hassle. Customers don't have to submit a rebate to get the promotional rate, it's instantaneous on signup. Our premium channel promotions will automatically fall off after the promotional period, eliminating the need for the customer to call in. I guess this is why DirecTV received an "F" rating from the BBB with over 40,000 complaints against them.
Re: This is why I'm glad I work
Is this not a case of a pot calling the kettle black? In your post you, a Dish Network employee/advocate, have the gall to call Direct TV a disreputable company, when Dish Network has had their fair share of lawsuits resulting in settlements.
While I am not praising Direct TV in any manner, how dare you make reference to Direct TV's BBB rating of an "F" "with over 40,000 complaints", when your company/employer has a BBB rating of "C+" with 13839 complaints over the past 36 months. Wait there is more, you speak about how "customer friendly" Dish Network is and how gosh darn easy it is for the customer to get the best offers, rates, services, etc.
Watch this, of the filed BBB complaints dealt w/ Advertising Issues, Advertised price not honored, Advertised product not available, Advertised service not available, Advertised terms not honored, Advertisement did not disclose all conditions required to take advantage of an offer, Advertisement misrepresented a product, Advertisement misrepresented a service, Bait & switch advertisement, False or unsubstantiated claims in advertisement. According to BBB website, 4,134 were regarding Billing or Collection Issues, 1,028 Failure to correct billing errors, Unauthorized Bank Debits and CC Charges, and the list goes on.
In my opinion, Dish Network needs some revamping also b/c lying to and steal from customers who work hard for their money is not the way to go.
So be careful of what you say, b/c someone may just read it.
Hope you are still "Glad you work for Dish Network"!!!
Bogus Directv charges for PPV in Texas
Has anyone experience PPV charges for adult and\or family movies being billed by Directv, to their account, which they did not make? Are there any antitrust or class action law suits being filed, against Directv, for bogus PPV charges in Texas?
Thanks
rb
Bogus Directv charges for PPV in Hawaii
I have the same problem. I had cancelled my Directv account after fulfilling my 2 year commitment at the end of October 2010. In Feb of 2011 I get a $200 bill for PPV movies they claim I watched during the month of December 2008. I hope there are more folks to bring this to light. I am now getting daily robocalls from their collections department. Overall I enjoyed the service and stopped for financial reasons. Now I warn everyone that will listen, "STAY AWAY FROM DIRECTV"
Fox
I will be changing to Dish soon. I am mad because you took Fox of the air on Sunday on the final game of the season. I had a lot of people coming over to watch the Green Bay and Chicago game there was no warning. Bad move by you and bad timing. You could of waited until Monday.
Directv programing
Directv is always breaking our contract. Now we may be losing our local channel CBS that is included in our contract that I am paying for, with on cost reduction to me. If I lose anymore channels I will no longer keep Directv! Sure I may get a bunch of channels, but most are infomercials and repeats that I hate! Maybe we get 10 channels that is worth watching? Anyway everything I watch I can get off of an antenna. Lets see, That is free.
Hostage Holding
It seems that DIRECTV is holding the citizens of the Columbia, SC hostage. They are trying to negoiate a deal with the local NBC affiliate, WIS, Channel 10. If they don't reach an agreement by December 31, this station could go off the air. What can be done, I wonder?
Movie advertising
I've got a major problem with Directv's movie advertising often on every channel it seems. Every channel may be small stretch but it's a hell of a lot. I flick the remote everytime I see them now.
DirecTV Bait & Swith / UNauthorized charge to my debit card / Fr
I was in the process of moving to Lubbock in December of 2008. I was getting utilities, internet and TV service set up in order to move into a rental beginning in January of 2009. On or around the week of Christmas I ordered Direct TV. I had been a loyal Direct TV customer living in Rockwall, Tx from 2001 to 2007. When I placed my order for my Lubbock residence, my daughter was sitting with me, and I specifically asked the representative if they had local channels. He told me yes. I asked him at least 4 times if they had local channels and he said yes every time. Thus I ordered the service and paid Direct TV with a debit card giving him authorization for a total of $21.60. That amount was deducted from my checking account on Dec. 24, 2008.
December 29, 2008 Direct TV installers came to my house to install the service. I had to work so I arranged for my daughter to be there. She called when they got there and was told that there were no local channels and the technician told them that Direct TV was doing that too everyone, that I wasn’t the first. At that point I told her to tell them to go ahead that I would deal with it later and at that point as far as I was concerned they had broken the agreement.
On December 31, 2008 I ordered Suddenlink TV service. On January 14, 2009 Suddenlink Tech’s had installed my new service and the next day Jan. 15, 2009 I called Direct TV and told them I was cancelling their service. They had baited and switched me and I was mad.
It Doesn’t End There.
On January 23, 2009 I was looking at my bank statement online and noticed that Direct TV had run a memo posted charge for $514.61 from my account. That was Friday. The next day Jan. 24, 2009 I went to my local bank where I had banked and spoke with a representative and told her to put a stop payment on it which at the time said that it would work. On Monday January 26, 2009 the $514.61 was taken out of my account and given to Direct TV. I went back to the bank and spoke with the branch president. Told her what was going on and that I had put a stop payment on it and was assured that it would work, which it didn’t. She called Direct TV but it got me nowhere. A dispute was filed with the bank but to no avail.
There’s More.
In the first week of March 2009 I was checking my bank balance again online and on March 2, 2009 the bank had let Direct TV take another $276.05 from my account. I went back to the bank and was told that they couldn’t do anything about it; once again I filed a dispute with the bank and once again was told there was nothing that they could do about it.
The bank in both instances didn’t have any written proof from Direct TV that I had a written contract with them. They (Direct TV) told both the bank and I that if I would reestablish their service that they would give me my money back. I said hell no.
On May, 15, 2009 after I had sent them their equipment back they did refund my $276.05.
As of this date Direct TV is still up to their antics of promising local channels but not delivering. I would bet theirs hundreds and probably thousands out their just like me who have been screwed by Direct TV and local banks.
I would appreciate your help in this matter. If you live in Texas: West Texas or in the surrounding Lubbock area contact me and lets put an end to being screwed by Direct TV. Direct TV is committing Fraud, outright unauthorized use of our credit and debit cards and this needs to stop.
Thanks

Charging me for an account that isn't mine.
I have been a directv customer for years also. My daughter has an account also and and she occasionally used my debit card to pay her bill since she had no bank account. In the last 10 months she used it once 7 months ago. She had gotten an account and had paid her bill with it the last 3 times. Her husband had his hours cut back at work and she was unable to pay her bill so DTV decided to deducted almost $500.00 from my account! They charged for equipment not returned and she hadn't even received the boxes to return it. Of course this transaction was never authorized by me and I have never signed anything with them. Nice since I am on unemployment and am trying to pay my bills. I have called numerous times to them about this and e-mailed and faxed documentation but 3 weeks later still haven't gotten my refund. Today they called and want me to refax the documentation since they apparently lost it. This company is incompetent and I advise everyone to not use them.
$50 for Transfer
The TV Commercial about Free Transfer when you relocate is a LIE.
I had to pay $50 because I haven't been DTV customer for six months yet. I paid all the bills on time to DTV and was expected to do what DTV TV promotion said when moved. Very disappointing. The customer service was helpless and no sense of "customer service" attitude. Cannot wait till the contract is over!
DirecTv Lies to keep you locked into a contract
I have been a loyal DericTv customer since 2006 but sing August 2010 my experience with DTV changed as I feel that I was lied by DTV management staff to as an entrapment to sign into a contract again. I was promised for 6 months $20.00 off and Free DVR service $7.00 for 12 months. Instead this month DTV staff continues to deny my credits and DTV so called "Floor Managers" continued to disrespect me and continued to be unhelpful. This is a legal matter as a requested to speak with someone higher than a floor manager but he told me that he will not allow me to talk to his supervisor denied my request as a loyal customer as they always say when they pick up their phone. I can see the big headlines on a newspaper country wide that reads "DTV lies to get you to lock into a contract!!!" This will definitely catch the eyes of many other customers that are in my position right now. I would like a DTV Regional Manager to call me as this matter should lead to legal actions. I want my contract cancelled and no fee charged.

Thank you SO much for this page...
I was signing up for their "rebate" today, just hours before the installers were due to arrive. DirecTV made a fatal mistake: on their rebate page, they pluralized the word into "Rebates" - that activated my crap detector. When I googled "DirecTV rebate scam" I found this UCAN page and immediately called in to cancel my order. I still have to worry about the reversal of the "handling" charge and I asked them to confirm for me the last four digits of my card. I was told by the first representative that she did not have this info and that she would have to transfer me to a different rep who would have it. The second rep said that they no longer had that info because my account was canceled.
I feel like I avoided a monumental ongoing headache - THANK YOU!!!!!
It is getting to the point that living like a hermit would be the only way to protect yourself from an ocean of service provider/membership scams and daily headaches. Better to read books and stay at home and forget about TV, internet, phone, travel or insurance.
I have been a victim of both
I have been a victim of both Directv and Dish Network scams. I am looking to join some kind of class action lawsuit against Directv a.s.a.p.
Anyways, I signed up for Directv for my sister and I personally has never had any dish type services, however upon signing up I was lead to believe that my sister would be receiving the discount of @29.99 a month plus whatever costs for the receivers. My sister had Directv for a couple of hours and then canceled due to so reason that I really don't know, however while on the phone talking to a rep (over a year had passed since my sister first signed up for Directv) promising that I would get the best deal possible. However, what he failed to disclose is that because my sister used her phone number a year ago, (directv keeps consumers phone number in their system for two years) that I would not be entitled to the $29.99 a month discount rate, even though I was using my name (DeeDee) for the service. When my sister called to tell them (second instance) that they had failed to mail out the 12 month rebate for the discount of $29i.99 a month with the 3 mons free starz, hbo and some other crap. I will be filing a complaint under the Michigan Consumer Protection Act because they failed to disclose this information. There is no way that I would have agreed to a 2=year contract had I known of the deceit.
Rebate BS
I have a similar situation going and want Directv's blood. Have you learned anything yet about the best approach to get the price for the service you agreed to pay for?
Thank you
DirecTV Pay vs Free Channels
Dear DirecTV:
Although I don't have TV myself, I enjoy watching several of the programs that are exclusives of yours while sitting at my local watering hole. But the owner neglected to pay the bill this month, so you promptly cut off her service. Well, not exactly. I was surprised to find that you cut off only the worthwhile channels, but not the hundreds upon hundreds of infomercial-only channels.
Television programming being what it is these days, it didn't take a lot for me to adjust to the free infomercials that you still deliver to the bar.
That brings me to this. Since the infomercials are obviously free, can you hook me up so I can get them at home too?
Now my buddy next door has a question for you too. Unlike me, he abhors commercials and avoids them like the plague. He's even installed an auto-mute device on his set that kills the sound when they come on (which is pretty often on broadcast TV). So when I told him that yours are free, he thought for a moment and came up with an idea. He wants to know if you have some kind of "sub-basic" plan that delivers just the actually worthwhile channels but NOT the free infomercials, for less money than your basic and other overpriced plans. He's ready to sign-up.
Thanks. Paco Morratto
DirecTV in Ms Gulf Coast
DirecTV sucks!!!!They lied about stations that were available in my area. They installed the equipment and when I pressed them to tell how to access the local area stations, I was finally told they were not available. I made them remove the equipment immediately before the service tech left. They then proceeded to charge me for a disconnect fee and an early termination fee. When I complained loudly about "full and fair disclosure", they agreed to waive the fees but proceeded to deduct it from my checking account. I have been fighting with them since 4/12/10 to get my money returned and at every call, there is another reason why it has not been done. I have been repeatedly lied to and told whatever to get me off the phone. At first, it was a week to ten days for the refund to be processed, then it was that I didn't request a credit so nothing had been done, then it was 30 days to process a credit, then whoever was to issue the credit didn't do it so it sat there in limbo for a week until I called to check on the credit again, now today I was told that it is 6-8 weeks since the last posting on my account (which is later since the employees didn't do their jobs) before the money will be refunded. In total, it will be 10 weeks that DirecTV has had use of my money and they don't feel obligated to pay any interest on the use of it or any real need to return it in a timely manner. I don't consider their business to be reputable and would not recommend them to anyone.
Cancelled DirecTV due to installation
I was a pretty happy customer with DirecTV for about 4 years. My move from Virginia to Florida was painless -- I was able to install the dish and receivers in my new home and got hooked back up with a simple phone call. Flash forward several years and I moved to Colorado -- decided to go with cable for the new home because I could do broadband and HDTV in one package (Qwest required you to install and maintain a landline to get DSL at the time even if you weren't ever going to use the service).
Now Comcast is moving to a cumbersome "all digital" format and Qwest no longer requires you to subscribe to landline phone service so I investigated switching to DirecTV. Before I placed the order, I was assured both by Qwest and DirecTV that the "installer" could just drop off the receivers -- at most s/he'd have to install a new dish since my house already had an older DirecTV dish (multi-satellite 3 LNB).
On install day, I got a call on my cell phone with the installer saying he couldn't just drop off the receivers. I called DirecTV and was told professional installation was required even though I told them I could do it myself. I spoke to 2 or 3 different CSRs and got the same story -- I have to have "professional installation" even though I was perfectly capable of screwing in coax and calling in an activation number when I was in grade school.
The last CSR kept trying to convince me I had to have professional installation. He raised issues like "what if you have to repoint the dish?" (answer: I can look up the satellite locations online and use a compass to repoint it until I get a signal reading -- this isn't hard stuff). I told him I saw three choices: drop off the equipment, let me pick up the equipment or cancel my order. After 30 minutes with him trying convince me to have a "professional" installation, I told him to cancel the order.
I'm disappointed. I loved my previous experience with DirecTV but this latest experience really soured me. They didn't even have the courtesy to respond to the written complaint asking for the rationale on why they insist on professional installation.
I did hear some complaints
I did hear some complaints regarding Direct TV, but I didn't encounter any special problem with those guys. Anyway if I will stumble in one of the problems listed above, I will definitely file a complaint.
Directv rebate scam
We live in Toledo, OH. We are victims of the Directv rebate scam. They first lured us in by offering the $29.99 / month deal with free 3 months Starz and Showtime package. When you sign up for it, they will just install the HD package for you without asking for your permission(a $10.00 /month option. Thus, your bill goes up to $39.99/month)(The truth is you must have a HD receiver to receive local channels; I found that out later after many phone calls but they never told you in the beginning). Also, their staffs whom you call to subscribe always will not tell you that you must send in the confirmation numbers(more than one) on line BEFORE the installation so the rebate will take effect immediately. Other wise, you will fall into a trap that you will keep paying the regular amount they normally charge everybody(which is around $77/ month). We were not happy when we received the first bill which is $77; We make phone calls after phones call to deal with the staffs who are well trained to scam us. First, there are good understanding people who are willing to reason with you and help you to resolve the issue; But there are also some people who want to help the company to rip you off. We deal will some heartless few who will either told you to read the fine print and the policy of the company and when you ask to speak to the supervisor you will be forced to listen to the music until your cell phone battery is dead. We made more phone calls and finally one understanding staff pick up the phone, after telling him in a nice way (not mad) that the fact is if Directv insist that we must pay what we are not sign up for: The $10/month extra HD service fee and the regular fee before the rebate take effect, we are going back to the Cable and they can send our bill to the collection agency. The good staff is willing to help us to resolve the issue and adjusted our bill to $29.99/month plus tax. Finally, problem solved (After close to 2 hours on the line talking to 3 different staffs).
My advice to the people who feel they are being scammed: Try to understand your rights and who you are dealing with. The company is using the general Americans' weakness to scam you. Americans are so worry about their credit scores especially those who make good money and the young adults who have been taught to follow like sheep since they were borned. Ignore the tactic they use to make you quit calling them such as repeating the bogus company policy and the fine print in the contract to you and play classical music to torture you until you hang up or to the death of your cell phone battery when you ask to speak to the supervisor. Get to the point, tell them nicely that if they would like to continue the scam, you will give your business to the Cable. However, the best way to stop this madness is to urge the congress to stop all the rebates scams; No more rebate, no problem! Just remember, there is always a catch on every good deal!!
What choice does DTV have
What would you do to prevent scammers and low life from subscribing and then not pay? We can all thank the scum of the earth for the actions that these (ALL) service providers are forced to use to not get taken by these arse holes whom think they our smarter than the rest of us. These scammers have caused alot of businesses to take actions that cost us more money.

Really?
I've been a DTV customer for years. I haven't been the victim of any of these pratices yet. I can't think of any reason to single out DTV actually. AT&T Universal, Dish, Comcast and all the rest including DTV are all guilty of reprehensable business practices. The only real solution is to stop buying the service. I encourage everyone to simply stop paying for TV, get themselves an over the air antenna and enjoy! Remember why we all got cable in the first place right? Because the signal on the antenna was terrrible! With digital TV that is no longer the case! In fact, over the air HD is the best looking HD I have ever seen! DirecTV will soon be getting my cancellation notice!
