Lens.com selling recalled contact lenses

UCAN.org user AmiLin recently brought a disturbing practice to our attention. After buying 4 boxes of contact lens from Lens.com, AmiLin discovered that she had been sold recalled contacts. She was aware that some of the Optix 02 contact lenses (the brand she normally buys) had been recalled and even contacted Lens.com before purchasing to confirm that none of their Optix 02 lenses had sku's within the recall range (view the recall notice here). Lens.com assured AmiLin that she would not be sold recalled contact lenses, however, that is exactly what they did. As if that weren't enough, Lens.com refused to fully refund AmiLin for the recalled contact lenses. Read some of AmiLin's correspondence with Lens.com below:

Hi

I had purchased Optix O2 and they had the sku numbers that matched the recalled boxes. I would like to have a refund/or exchange. Please get back to me as soon as possible.

Thanks
Ami

Dear Ami,
You just need to fill out the back of the invoice which is the return form and just mail them back to us.

Thank you,

I will be sending out today 3 boxes that are unopened and would like the refund of the boxes as soon as possible. Reason for return contacts codes were part of the recall and which then caused pressure on eye from one of the 4 boxes I had ordered. Return of three will be sent out today from San Diego CA.

Thank you
Ami

My Own opinion!!

What ever happen with Ami was wrong!
But it was Ami's responsibility to see reviews and site before buy any thing. some reputed site sell's same product in more price but to buy form that reputed sites is more secure other wise this might happen again and again.

Follow up on Lens.com

After sending back all contacts to be refunded on 10 January, I called on 16 January to confirm receipt. Nakesha at Lens.com claimed that they had not received the package. I called back 15 minutes later and spoke with Jane, gave her the delivery confirmation number, and was then told that Karen, who was responsible for RGP lens issues (I hadn't heard the name before) had gone for the day. I was told to expect a call from Karen in the morning by Jane.

I did not receive the call, so I called and spoke Kelsey and asked to be put through to Karen. After much hold time, I was told that the order had been completely refunded to my FSA card, and that I would see the refund in 24 to 48 hours. I confirmed that the actual action had been done, instead of a promise that it would be done.

I will report if the refund goes through. If it does, it appears that tenacity is key in dealing with this company if you have been deceived. Obviously, I will never work with them again and encourage others to pay a bit more, but get the right products without fearing for your safety or wellbeing.

But most of all, take the names and record the conversations of every person you speak with so you have a proverbial paper trail. Lastly, contact the FDA, the Better Business Bureau, and the Missouri and Nevada Attorney General offices to report concerns. Only by calling these companies to task can we ensure that we will be dealt with fairly. Do not take excuses and false promises if you feel you are being ripped off.

More Informtion

Turns out Lens.com is incorporated in my home state, Nevada http://nvsos.gov/sosentitysearch/CorpDetails.aspx?lx8nvq=h3gXsUK3U%252buBzbZm5LN5cg%253d%253d&nt7=0

Nevada's Attorney General is strong in protecting consumers. The website is here: http://ag.state.nv.us/

Is Lens.com dangerous to one's health

First off, there is a course of action for this. If enough people complain to the FDA (which regulates the contact lens end) and the Missouri Attorney General's office (for the questionable dealings), it may have the effect of correcting the injustice that Lens.com is inflicting on it's customers.

I had a bad experience with lens. com and RGP lenses, I ordered a replacement for one lens, plus two additional pairs. The single that was to match my original Boston ES brand, ostensibly made under the same conditions, same materials, etc, was about 90 percent lighter and appeared larger. Because my original Boston ES (ordered through my doctor) was so much darker, I couldn't wear them together, as my eyes appeared to be different colors. Normally, RGP lenses aren't intended to change color, but because the shades were so different, it was clear they were not the same lens.

The manufacturer also forget to put a dot on the right lens for one of the other pairs, so one could not tell which was which (this is a standard ordering option for RGP lenses.

I talked with "Service" for weeks. They couldn't get their story straight. I even sent them pictures of the lenses (happy to share them with anyone who wishes to see).

Moreover, the website clearly offers an additional discount with no stated qualifications for those who order more than one lens per eye. They refused me the discount.

I contacted Bausch and Laumb (the makers of the Boston ES dot) and they warned me I might not have the correct lenses.

First I was told by Lens.com that they would ship me a replacement lens. When nothing came, I called them, and was told they "changed their mind" and said they would refund my purchase. I insisted on a written communication. The best I got were these:

Dear Jane:

Thank you for writing back. I was under the understanding you were going to call
me and thus have called again.

As I mentioned, the tint does not match my Boston ES lens, and I have doubts
that it is the correct one. The tint's saturation is less than half of my other
Boston ES, and is thus does make the pair unwearable--my eyes look different and
the tint does indeed affect the color of my eye, rendering the Lens.com lens
useless, as it was ordered to replace a lost lens. Although the RGP specialists
state otherwise, I can demonstrate that it is clearly not the same, and makes my
eyes look artificial

If I have not been made the correct lens, I expect it to be rectified. Moreover,
the language of the discount offer makes no reference to tint as a disqualification.

Please let me know if I have to contact the appropriate federal regulating
agencies and Bausch and Laumb via Independent RGP labs to ensure that I have not
been given the incorrect product. I will file a dispute with my credit card
company in the meantime as the brown lens I received is not the same as my
standard Boston ES lens. As you can see from the photo attached, the product
isn't even close to matching my genuine Boston ES product, which is
substantially darker.

If Lens.com cannot get the correct lens, I want a refund.

Lens.com

Ordered over a month ago still no lenses. Never ever use this company. Customer service hung up on me twice, the worst expeience i've ever had after over 20 years of ordering lenses.

Lens

Lens.com was only willing to refund the consumer mentioned above for the unopened boxes of lenses, even though they had been recalled.

cheap MBT shoes

MBT stands for Masai Barefoot Technology. The company that makes MBT shoes (also known as the anti-shoe) is Swiss Masai. The uniquely-designed, multi-layered, cured sole is designed to simulate walking in sand (similar to the natural walking environment of the Masai in Kenya). This creates a natural, uneven walking surface and forces the body to use all the major and stabilsing muscle groups, thus training the whole body to move correctly.

Very Bad Company

There are many complaints about this company:
http://marketplace.health.discovery.com/merchant_rating/Lens_com_417.html

And according to this article by the St. Lois Better Business Bureau:
http://stlouis.bbb.org/article/missouri-firm-offering-discount-contact-lenses-has-customers-seeing-red-11131

they are basically the same company as JustLenses.com, ContactsAmerica.com and 1-800-GET-LENS.

Disappointing

I used the site many times but till now i didn't have any problem with them, but i wonder here why would thy do such things, it's really awkward.

Strange

It's hard to believe something like this happen, but lens is big site why they are doing something like this, now I'm thinking twice before buying anything.

Lens.com Adds "Handling Fee" Without Notifying Buyer

I just purchased some contact lenses from lens.com. I seldom check the totals on online purchases because the computer does no make a mistake when adding up line items. As I was checking on my order, I noticed that this computer did make a mistake of $10.40 in their favor. When I called customer service, I was told that it was a "handling fee". This fee is not disclosed as a line item on your invoice, but rather with a minute asterisk next to the subtotal line. When I pointed that out, I was told that the web person was trying to "fix" that.

These kinds of unethical practices give legitimate sellers on the internet a bad name.

Recalled lenses - unheard of but good to know!

That's crazy! I've been ordering contacts for nearly 20 years and have only ran into two recalls. One situation was similar in that they did not want to issue me a refund immediately but it all worked out OK. I've probably used at least 5 different types of lenses over the years, ordering contact lenses from VisionDirect.com mostly. I usually get Acuvue lenses and/or Freshlook contacts, as I like the way those feel over most of the others. I never ordered from Lens.com but did have a neighbor who told me she had billing problems with them. I will not order from them or recommend them in the future.

Do you know how often recalls occur with contacts? And, it seems like this would be more publicized if it were a real health concern. I hardly ever hear about it in the news or online.

I did get a bad recalled

I did get a bad recalled box...a few weeks before finding out..This was my second box since Oct , 2006 having lots of eye problems dryness, red eye,Strategy Games this started in Dec having lots of pics. but I was slow in putting the problem together because of wearing the contacts because I didn't wear them daily

This was my secound box

This was my secound box since Oct , 2006 having lots of eye problems dryness, red eye, this started in Dec having lots of pics. but Acne Scar I was slow in putting the problem together because of wearing the contacts because I didn't wear them daily Then in end of Feb/March having to see a eye specialist could not hardly see, red, watering all the time very painfull, was in lots of pain and pretty low regarding all this.

Accountability

I really dont understand....Why would someone sell recalled contacts? That could be dangerous. People like these should be hel accountable for their actions. The question is, how to hold someone accountable when doing something like this?

Acuvue oasys might be the best.

I like it anyway. It's popular in these days.

Is Walmart selling recalled O2 Optix contact lenses, too?

While researching this matter I found on a web forum a comment indicating that Walmart is also selling, or has sold, recalled O2 Optix contact lenses. The link to the website is: http://www.joelitton.net/A559B2/home.nsf/d6plinks/6YT47V

I was also using o2 optix contacts , which wal-mart sold to me after the recall purchased Feb 1st/07 and I did get a bad recalled box...a few weeks before finding out..This was my secound box since Oct , 2006 having lots of eye problems dryness, red eye, this started in Dec having lots of pics. but I was slow in putting the problem together because of wearing the contacts because I didn't wear them daily Then in end of Feb/March having to see a eye specialist could not hardly see, red, watering all the time very painfull, was in lots of pain and pretty low regarding all this. This wasn't in just one eye but both...both of my cornias had over 100 nic's on them I've spent lots of money on med's trying to fix the problem this went of for over 2mths. I thought I was going blind and doctors weren't able to tell me that I wasn't going blind. I also been told that I well not be able to wear contacts again. Thanks to O2 optix and Wal-mart :-(

O2 Optix contacts recall

I had very serious corneal ulcerations in BOTH my eyes 2 months apart due to the defective contacts had all the same SYMPTOMS PAIN, TEARING ,BLURRED VISION, REDNESS, HEADACHE should I continue!! This went on for 6 months with DAILY visits for weeks to check my vision. I have contacted a lawyer who is seeking on my be-half for reimbursement for over $ 700.00 in medical copays and a possible law suit for pain and suffering and poss permanant damage.
PLEASE contact ciba vision and put a complaint in and send them a bill for your medical expenses they have been in contact with the physician who treated me and has asked him to complete a questioniere. They are making light of the situation sayhing there are only 7 global cases. More people need to contact them , I urge you to do the same we were the victims. I purchased my lenses from Costco who offered a full refund but I am seeking this from Cibavision.

Lens.com censors my O2 Optix comment on their website

Lens.com's O2 Optix web page gives readers the options of leaving comments on the product and ranking the lenses on a scale of 1 - 5 stars. The web page is: http://www.lens.com/contact-lenses/lens394.asp

I tried leaving an informational "buyer beware" warning on that web page about Lens.com's practice of selling recalled lenses on their website, but so far Lens.com has censored the message and not allowed it to be posted. The message, which can be seen below, is certainly not an effort at smearing their name, but rather is merely intended to make consumers aware of Lens.com's practice of reselling recalled lenses in order to help protect themselves. The message I have tried leaving is:

Buyers of the O2 Optix lenses need to be aware that Lens.com has engaged in selling recalled contacts. I am by no means claiming this is a regular practice, but it certainly has been done. To see one consumer's experience with this, check out her blog at the UCAN.org website:
http://www.ucan.org/blog/money_privacy/money_saving_tips/lens_com_sellin...

Also, please note that the 1-star rating is not for the quality of the O2 Optix contact lenses, which we have no opinion on, but rather is for the Lens.com practice of selling recalled lenses.

Below you will find a link to the original recall letter sent to doctors by Ciba Vision, the O2 Optix contact lens manufacturer. If you scroll through it a bit you will find on page 3 the SKU numbers within the recall range. The website is:
http://www.cibavision.com/docs/recall_letter.pdf

It's also important to note that Lens.com was only willing to refund the consumer mentioned above for the unopened boxes of lenses, even though they had been recalled. This suggests to UCAN that the intent may be to resell those same recalled lenses again to other consumers. We just don't want it to be you (or anyone for that matter).

For more on this issue, please visit our website www.ucan.org as we are continuing to investigate this problem.

ACUVUE Contact Lenses
ACUVUE OASYS Contact Lenses, they are all good.

Thank you so much for putting this up. This means a lot to me and others that were scammed by this seller. It is a shame that they could not just be upfront with me and tell me that they are recalled bar codes. Fortunately they did refund me almost all my money..Thank you again so much for putting this up!
