Use AT&T U-verse to negotiate a better cable TV and Internet package with Cox and Time Warner

AT&T has recently rolled out a bundled cable TV and high-speed Internet package in San Diego. Still in its infancy, AT&T U-verse is available in only 21 cities with a grand total of 30,000 subscribers. Nonetheless, it represents direct competition for Cox Communications and Time Warner Cable in San Diego. And when there is competition, consumers gain instant leverage. Below are some tips for using your AT&T U-verse leverage to get a better TV/Internet package, as well as a price comparison.

  • You've got nothing to lose: Unlike cell phones, for the vast majority of cable TV/Internet packages, there is no termination fee (you could have a termination fee if you get DSL through your phone company). Usually, cable companies do not have to worry about consumers cancelling and going to a competitor, because there are no competitors. So, theoretically, if there were multiple providers, one could switch from company to company taking advantage of free trials without ever paying a penny (...that day may already be here for a lucky few).
  • Let them know you are in demand: Happy with your service? Not happy with your current package? It doesn't really matter. Either way, you'll have an opportunity to get the same (or better) service for less. Granted, the San Diego AT&T U-verse rollout is not extensive at this point. However, AT&T has been very secretive about what specific areas are covered, and there is a good chance that Cox and Time Warner are in the dark with everyone else. So give your cable provider a call and tell them you're considering taking your service to AT&T U-verse and that you checked online and it said you were eligible (no matter what Cox or Time Warner tells you). Also let them know that AT&T is offering the first two months free on its 240 and 300 channel packages. They may say there is nothing they can do for you, but be persistent and see if you can't at least walk away with a couple of promo offers.
  • Follow the freebies: If you are lucky enough to be in an AT&T U-verse service area, you may not have to pay for TV or Internet service for some time. Just like with cell phones, the good deals are offered for sign-ups and upgrades. Cox, Time Warner, and AT&T all offer sweet deals on either TV or Internet packages, or both. As mentioned above, you should not incur any termination fees for jumping from company to company to catch the next best deal.

There is some of yelling

There is some of yelling about who is better. Does TW have faster internet, fiber to Vrad and what that means and more so over all quality and spend Uverse can provide it their telco line via TV service. As a former Tech and Tech support agent for Uverse I could based upon my mood raise concerns from constant issues or praise the quality of legit excellent service.
I have a pretty good back ground in DSL, Digital service before I took a job at Uverse. What amazed me once we got beyond the Dummies' guide of IT service in training, how it began more a class on purely playing it by ear. It makes sense though when it sets in that the concept of Uverse is therefor in experimental stage, so any customer will take a chance of great headaches with not just install, but effects beyond such of limited service due to improper installation, old telco wires, or even more frequent distance from Vrad to prem not allowing the service to be 100 %. Sadly even new premo homes that have fiber optic service all the way to the house absence of a Vrad has issues. Does every house have those issues.... NO. Does AT&T know for sure as a company why? No they don't. Will they some day? Of course the answer is more about when on whether a yes or no. I see 2 problems per experience that its either a sloppy install, or environmental. In a perfect world At&t would dig up everyones phone lines and replace them properly attaching non-VRAD purely fiber to prem(house) service and dedicate purely on a service free of Vrads. Of course thats too expensive at the moment. As of now most telco lines in the ground are beyond their prime. In a chaotic world the service will never be perfect for everyone, but just know that if you have issues with Uverse At&t will attempt to make it right, because they know its no where close to being perfect.

We were told that....

Its sad to read your frustration regarding uverse considering that you work for at&t.

There is no need to read between the lines of your post. Your post clearly indicates that there are serious issues with uverse as many of us have already experienced them.

The problem is that we were told that uverse was great, it wasn't. Some of us were told that we were getting fiber to our homes, it was a lie. We were told that things were going to improve over time as the service matured, that was 4 years ago and today it has not improved. Some of us started with a gateway profile of 27 Mbps shortly after it was downgraded to 25 Mbps now there is the 32 Mbps and not everybody can get it... I know I can't.

In the mean time we saw Verizon FIOS with WONDERFUL internet speeds and superb picture quality and we still have only 1 or 2 severely compressed HD streams. Now we see DOCSIS3.0 pooping everywhere with internet speeds of 50 and 100 Mbps and we are still at 18Mbps which is really 12Mbps

How can you 'attempt to make it right' when the underlying technology is so WRONG? I think this FTTN was a terrible idea and now it the end of the line, there is no more milk out of this twisted pair copper cow.

For me it is the end of the line and time to call Comcast and get TV, internet and phone. Their prices are perhaps lower than uverse and their internet speeds are amazingly higher than uverse.

U verse

I live in the Inland Empire in southern california.
Att called said I can get u verse and told me about it.
Wanted to set me up with a great deal. Said I have to talk it over and to call me back. He never called back. I got a few more calls but never the great deal he offered.
So I said ok why not. Well, I wanted out of twc's two yr. contract.
U verse was going to cost me ten bucks more a month. No real big deal. If the service is all what they say. Reading here its not.
Well the guy came to install. First thing he wanted to know was where was the phone box. i asked why do you want that. He said for the signal. He said the big box outside the mobile home park has the optic line. And is brought into the park. Then its brought to each mobile by the telephone wires....WTF....??????
How do you go from an optic line to a slow phone line and get 12 megs of internet and all the hd tv stuff?????
Also said he would have to spice new ends on the existing cable to connect to their eq. So what if it don't work and I want it replaced back. Nope, they don't do that. What about that free install? Don't include new cable. So, I should hope that this old phone line will bring me all u verse says it will. Not after reading the stories here.
I just can't believe that they are using a phone line for this???
No matter how fast cable or optic is. When the last line to bring all this to the house is a phone line how can you get all they say they offer? Sorry, but twc may suck. But att u verse just don't sound right using phone line. I could go with cable which still can carry plenty....but phone line??

U Verse

First of all, do you have any clue how ATT Uverse works. It is run through Fiber Optics Lines (that is cables that have plastic or glass insides instead of metal). This allows larger bandwith (huge amount of data at one time), Signal travels at the speed of light (versus regular cable travels at the speed of sound), and it is what the pro's use (they use it to run cables under the atlantic ocean for international communications).
Next, we are currently already using a form of fiber optics...its called a telephone line. So you saying "...telephone wires...WTF...????" is stupid because telephone wires are fiber optic and transfer data quicker. The only reason metal existed was because fiber optic or telephone lines require a device to descramble the line (such as your telephone or in this case the ATT Uverse reciever box).
Also, since fiber optics is new in the world of television, they have to make modifications to current systems, hence the splicing.
Maybe you should go look some stuff up!

LOL, Are you for real? Do you

LOL, Are you for real?

Do you know what the speed of sound or light is?

Sooo, uverse is fiber? to your home? WRONG! uverse is fiber to the VRAD and from there twisted pair copper cables to your house. UVERSE IS NOT 100% PURE FIBER plain and simple.

Now to the good stuff.

So signal travels at the speed of light in uverse and at the speed of sound in coaxial? HA! HA! HA! where did you go to school? Let me guess YOU DIDN'T!

We? Who are WE? Do you work for AT&T? If you do that could explain your absolute ignorance about this simple technical concepts. If you don't work for AT&T YOU SHOULD! They can use a genius like you.

Back to 'we are currently using...blah, blah' So you need a 'device' to descramble the line? No shit! Why Alexander G. Bell didn't think of that? Fiber optics new in the TV world? WOW! where did you learn all this stuff? Form www.uverseusers.com?

So they modified the TV system by 'splicing'? Splicing what?

I want to thank you for brighten up my day and I will order uverse as soon as it becomes available in my area which will be NEVER!

U-Verse

Just for information there is no way to run fiber to house connection. No one has invented a tap to work Fiber to TV. Has to go from fiber node to feeder cable then to drop caple to home. When AT&T gives up there will be a company step in and make the system work. It is the future. However AT&T has failed already in the CATV business. They think only fortune 500 companies are capable of engineering and constructing their system. When they turn it over to a small eager company then it will work properly and off to the moon from there

Check out VerizonFiOS

Interesting conversation. I would recommend you guys check out FiOS offered by Verizon. It is a fiber cable run directly to the house. It is a new line installed from the existing fiber lines in the street, which were installed earlier. I currently have this service in my home in Portland, OR and I love it.

It is not so much the speed of the connection, (which is 68% of the speed of light, compared to coax, which is about 87% the speed of light). The improvement comes in how much data is transferred at one time. The sheer volume of data fiber can handle makes coax seem like a joke, there really is no comparison.

It sounds like AT&T is trying to fool the public by providing fiber in the street but not to the house. That technology is not really a new technology at all, but they try and make is seem like it is a big deal for the consumer when it isn't.

It would be a big deal if we were all still using DSL, then is absolutely would matter what kind of cables the provider was using. But with Broadband the only people who care what is in the street is the provider, because they can service more customers with one service main.

There is a ton if info on this topic out there...just Google it. Good luck to you guys getting true fiber to your homes. Once you have it you will never want anything less.

-Jeremy from Portland

Whoever you are, you need to

Whoever you are, you need to shut the hell up until you know what you are talking about! YOU are obviously the one without a clue. (Signal travels at the speed of sounds in a metal cable instead of speed of light in a fiber optics cable, what are you smoking, dude just because you are CLUELESS don't just make stuff up!) The previous guy Doug, his comment were exactly correct, so don't go bashing him when you are dead wrong. I have U-Verse and was one of the first to be on it. What Doug said is right the BIG BOX he described is as far as the fiber goes and then it is just regular copper phone lines from there to wherever the end user is and this can be thousands of feet. There has never been AT&T fiber just for a residential phone line to houses, period. A lucky few got fiber to their house when AT&T started running it for high speed Intenet and TV etc, but once they figured out their little miracle of getting 35+MB over copper that ended the fiber to the house, at least for a while. Eventually they WILL have to pick that back up and actually run fiber to everyone's home, but not for a while unfortunately.

Your about as stupid as they

Your about as stupid as they come son... do some research before syaing that retarded crap.. no way in hell uverse is more expensive than your service for same channel lineup.. also, you can record four shows at once with cox? oh yeah i forgot thats a no. u think cox would give you the cable for free if they installed in a new house? no dumbass

Issues w uverse

Waited for 4 hrs for tech to set up. He didn't show. Spent 20 minutes being transfered with customer service. Set up delayed one day.
No issues with netflix with cox. Uverse pauses, buffers, puts out of sync audio on netflix .
Internet was fine with cox. Uverse causes jump backs when on line.
Cox music channels clear and good. Uverse makes buzzing noise on music channels and music picks are not as good as cox.

After talking to people and reading the stories about the customer service I am going back to cox this week.

WiFi

One more thing I did not mention. AT&T include free access to their WiFi when you have the UVerse internet service. This is great, particularly if you like Starbuck's or McDonald's, since most Starbuck's and McDonald's have an AT&T WiFi hotspots, along with many other locations.

AT&T UVerse Signal

If you have some problems with speed, freezing, or phone drop outs ask the tech to install a signal booster. We were at the edge of their range and had some initial issues. After the tech installed the booster outside on the line, the service worked great with no more problems.

AT&T UVerse vs. Cox and TWC

I have had the AT&T UVerse service for about a year now. I have the U200 + Internet Pro + Unlimited Voice. The service has been great. Every once in a while the TV picture will freeze, but usually for only about 10 seconds. This is far better than when I had Cox and lost service regularly for anywhere from a few mnuutes to hours. The advertised speed fr my internet is 3 Mbs and using a third party speed test ir comes back consistently at 2.8 Mbs, which is pretty close to the advertised. It is also much better than you can get from TWC for the price, particularly in the upload speed department. I get more channels for the price than with TWC and the phone has been great. The whole house DVR is a plus in that I can record and watch from any TV in the house. I can even set the DVR fro any computer, anywhere, which is great if I am not home and remember I forgot to set something to record. The only minor annoyance is having to pay $7/month for an additional box for each TV, but even with that, it is still cheaper than TWC and they don't charge extra for the remote like some cable companies.

I am moving and checked Cox where I am moving to. The AT&T UVerse is about $30/month cheaper for more channels and better internet speed. I would recommend AT&T UVerse over Cox or TWC any tme.

wrong

The information you just stated about being cheaper than TWC is incorrect infact it would serve you better to do more research on the information before you state cetain "facts". TWC HSD speed is faster than uvers, freezing of the picture does not happen with twc, the "whole house dvr" eats up bandwith and slows down internet when trying to do both at the same time and I know you dont get more channels for the price for a fact. I hate when people dont give full comparisons or inacurate information just as the table above states packages and prices, speeds and prices all of which are actually not correcty either.

DO NOT MAKE THE ATT UVERSE MISTAKE

I switched from Cox to Uverse in Mission Viejo CA about 4 months ago and it has been nothing but a huge migraine headache. I am on first name basis with the techs that come to my house to fix the random problems. Twice lost all landline phone services; HDTV images constantly pixelate when another show is recording. The internet tv program management is not user-friendly. I don't care how much more it costs, I am going back to Cox

Uverse TV Limits

Big families be warned. You can only tune into 4 channels at one time. So, if your recording a show and watching a program in one room. The 2 kids are each watching their own shows in their rooms, and your spouse wants to watch something else in the bedroom...This CAN NOT be done as there are not 5 "tuners" in the primary receiver. Or, lets say you have 8 receivers (maximum allowed by att). you can only use up to four of them at a time.
Reason: All the other receivers in the house have to access the tuners and recorded shows on the primary receiver. The receiver only has four TV Tuners inside. Even worse, You can not have more than one DVR receiver. Well, I'm sure if you were willing to pay for the service twice, they would probably give you two then.

AT&T Uverse Coupon Code

AT&T Uverse Coupon savings of $250-$400 is being offerd on AT&T Uverse Coupn on RicksCouponPicks but my question is there a specific coupon code where you can input at checkout for additional uverse savings.

Thanks for the wake up call COX

After several years of suppling my cable wants(not needs) at $55. mo. and over $20,000. later, I called out cox for the last time for a problem with dropped phone calls and internet disconnect issues. The tech they sent out in his infinate wisdom saw no harm in resting/leaning his 200+lbs. against a bed post, damaging it,(it only cost $4,000. what the hell, it wasn't his) then to make matters worse, leaving on his 2ft wide tool belt across his 4ft ass, he scrathed a $800. night stand. At that point he was instucted to get out, I only had a limited number of rooms with furniture left to damage. Their first offer to remedy the damage, came from Eric in the claims dept. who suggested I might try appling some furniture polish on the scratches, his second offer came a week later, and was for a whole $150. in Cox services, providing I sign a release, this was quickly, raised to a whopping $175. Being the difficult type that I must be, I actually found this offer insulting and unacceptable, considering the value of the furniture and extent of the damage.
But thanks Eric/Cox for showing me the err in my poor judgement. The next $20K I spend will NOT BE ON CABLE, but maybe a new motorcycle, car, boat, real estate, stocks, investments, travel, cruises, education, Vegas, anything more or less tangible than a cable signal that shows countless re-runs.
No more Cox-suckers in this house. Cox! your out...

stop whining.

stop whining.

There are a bunch of whiners

There are a bunch of whiners on here. I have had Uverse for a year now in oklahoma. ITS AWESOME! Yes the install took awhile but Im glad I switched from Cox.

What are the best TV settings for Panasonic Plasma

I recently got ATT U-verse. Seems alright.
What the settings people are finding that give the best TV picture for a sports game? I know peoples opinions are different regarding quality but I'm not 100% sure where I should start. If you have a Panasonic Plasma, let me know your settings.

I'm Glad I did NOT cancel my Cable

First. I got AT&T U-Verse to be abe to record 4 shows @ the same time!!!! .Yeah Right.
it turned out that you can only record 2 shows.

Second.. The next day The service goes out so did my internet, Plus my Phone ..#@#@& ..So here i'm with NO TV, no internet, and no phone. WOW.
so i called AT&T 800 # using my cell phone it took about 45 min to get to level (2). And then some.
ok so 3 days later they came and fixed it. !!! the NEXT day service went out again.
so i called again and they said just unplug the portal and everything will be ok.
I've been doing that every day now for the last 2 weeks, because the service seems to go out EVERY night @ midnite and comes back @ 9 or 10 AM. I finally got fed up and canceled my U-Verse last month.
now i get a bill for $325.00 for services i never enjoyed. bad equipment, and worst customer service EVER.
Wow. mean while i still have my Time Warner, that i never had any problem with for more than 5 years ,,, I'm Glad I KEPT my cable Service.

AT&T Uverse Scam

I experienced the same problem. When I finally canceled after 3 months of on/off service and hours of tech support, they sent me a bill. Of course I refused to pay it and they hounded me for a year. Then I spoke with a VP of AT&T who deleted the bill. One year later, the bill was back and had to be deleted again.
NEVER USE AT&T becasue it is really Pacific Bell who took over and is now tarnishing the AT&T name.

NEVER do business with AT&T

Columbus Ohio - Let me begin by stating that I have TWC and I cannot stand it. The box is a disaster, I lose the signal frequently and I have to reboot the box and or modem at least once a week. When I lived in Oregon I had Direct TV and was very pleased with it, but I now only have a mobile phone (no land line), DTV doesnt offer internet, and TWC will not provide internet without television.

Literally several times a week I angrily tell my wife we're dumping TWC immediately.

But... I have talked to ATT on 3 seperate occasions to switch. The first two times I discussed the capabilities of ATT with the installer when he arrived at my home after I waited for him for five hours. The installer confirmed my suspicions that the ATT salesperson had lied to me about what ATT could do and about how their promotional offers are set up. I am so disinfranchised with TWC that I actually went back to ATT a third time, and was lied to again.

I personally know 3 people in the Columbus area that have cancelled and then have received very large unexpected bills from ATT shortly thereafter. All three have been fighting it for months and everyone has a comical story of some sort about the boxes they send you.

There is very little doubt in my mind that ATTs box will be more reliable than TWC. How could it not be?? However, before switching, conisder something that ATT will never tell you: IF YOU HAVE MORE THAN 1 TV, AND ARE WATCHING A TV THAT DOES NOT HAVE THE DVR BOX, YOU CANNOT PAUSE OR REWIND LIVE TV. Example: You own 2 tvs. One in the family room, one in the bedroom. The DVR is on the TV in the family room. You are laying in bed watching TV... If the phone rings you are not able to pause the TV. Kind of a dealbreaker in my opinion.

As a whole, ATT UVERSE is more than willing to knowingly lie to its customers to get them to subscribe, and then will do everything within its power to overcharge and stall once the customer decides to cancel.

STAY AWAY!!! DECENT PRODUCT -- SHADY COMPANY.

What city U-Verse?

Wondering what city or area you are in?
I am in Birmingham, Alabama, and my area of the city just got U-Verse. Wonder how it is here?

Inquiry about rates, etc. for Internet use

Hello, I am looking for the best-priced/best quality Internet service to use at home/anywhere for my laptop computer.

I do not need any phone/tv services, (I don't need cable, and I don't have/need a phone landline in my apartment) I am just thinking about a wireless Internet connection for my laptop.

Also, if possible, I would like to have this Internet wireless service for my laptop on a month-to-month basis (not on a contract for a given period), so that I can try out the service without making a long-term, potentially expensive committment.

One more thing: Would you have any branches in San Diego, near the North Park/Hillcrest area that I could visit should I have any more questions?

Please let me know what service(s) you have that might fit my needs. Thank you very much.

Uverse was supposed to be the solution. ??

We had TWC/KC for years.  Uverse became available a year ago and we switched.

It has some features that are better than TWC - Basically the Scientific Atlantic boxes on TWC that are not DVR's seemed to suck so bad at switching between channels that are sd to hd.  That was pathetic.

However - our Uverse service has progressively gotten worse.  In the evenings the picture freezes on many of the tv's and if you record a show - it will be recorded very choppy as well.  Tech Support came out...and replaced one "Bad Receiver".  Still having issues with all 4 in the evenings...

Anybody had good luck with DirectTV ?

It might just be the area

It might just be the area you're in because I've had it for over a year and I LOOOOVEEEEE it! I would never switch back to anything else! It's so much faster and don't have to wait at all when I'm switching channels or getting a movie on demand. Comcast takes forever to pull up the on demand movie you're requesting! If feels ancient compared to Uverse

QUESTION

The wife and I just got U-VERSE yesterday, so far so good! Just a quick question I know with cable you can (T) off the COAX cable and run it into a cable ready TV. Can you do this with U-VERSE? Has anyone tried this yet?

Thanks!

You cannot do this because it

You cannot do this because it is IPTV it is not a regular cable signal so you have to have the box at each TV. You can split the final output from their box to the TV and watch the same program on two TV's, but that is kind of a waste.

Unfortunately, this can not

Unfortunately, this can not be done. It is possible to do this with cable service and is a definite positive perk when you have multiple TVs. U-Verse requires additional converter boxes for each TV. They will cost you $7/ month extra per TV.

uverse splitting signal

From what they told me during my uverse install, it can't be done...basically you need another "box" with each TV...not unlike satellite service.

Careful if you add U-Verse phone to existing U-Verse TV

I'm not sure what will come of this, as I may have no recourse but to pay it, but I'm still rather ticked off. I have AT&T U-Verse TV service and am quite happy with it. I also had an AT&T land line phone which was separate from the U-Verse TV. So I thought, why not get U-Verse voice service to bundle with my TV, save a little money and put all my charges on one bill. Simple right? Well, it might start to be cheaper way on down the road, because unbeknownst to me, if I simply want to switch from AT&T phone to AT&T U-Verse voice (and I've already got U-Verse TV service), there's a little matter of a $149 one-time connection fee. Great! Thanks for never mentioning this to me when I asked about setting up the service. At least with the AT&T phone service they mention the connection fee's cost and ask whether you'd like to break it up into installments. I know, caveat emptor, but I would hope/think that at some point they'd mention "oh-by-the way" to set this up you need to lay down $149 and then at least offer to break it up into a couple of bill installments. Hopefully when I hear back from them, we can work something out. Anyway, just remember that as a new customer you get free installation of your services, but afterwards, anything you add will involve a connection fee of some sort (even though basically all they do is activate the port on the back of the ethernet box which from an outsider's point of view doesn't look like it should cost $149, but that 's a whole other issue).

That cancellation fee is

That cancellation fee is actually waived if you get the phone at the same time as your TV. If the digital phone is not available in your area yet, you can get the "all distance" plan, which is the alternative to it until it becomes available (basically same plan except it's still on the regular phone plan) and have that install fee waived as well.

Agree with you. I recently

Agree with you. I recently switch to Uverse and it's true, you save an extra bucks plus you get better programming line-up.

u-Verse beats cable by miles

I got u-Verse a few days ago. Everything from VT, phone, Internet was installed quickly and works well.

I won't miss the crappy old Scientific Atlanta boxes and the chattering noise from teh Cox cable boxes. I won't miss the fact everytime I order an on-demand movie the box would freeze, I won't miss the Internet speed that was 3 times slower, I won't miss the slow menu programming, the slow channel changing, the lack of integration, or the lach of an HDMI port.

I could go on. But with a doubt, you cannot compare u-verse to cable, they are in entirely different leagues. This si why Cox advertises bunbled pricing, they cannot compete on features and capabilities. They would have to replace all those ole crappy boxes with new ones and guess what, they are not cheduled to do that for years and years.

wow this guy

"YOU CANNOT COMPARE U-VERSE TO CABLE" uverse is cable there genius

U-Verse is NOT cable you

U-Verse is NOT cable you jerk. Know what you are talking about before you jump on someone else. U-Verse is a totally different system. It is IPTV, which is in no way, shape or form the same as cable. You cannot use a cable tuner card in a PC with it, you cannot run it to a cable ready TV set either. So wise up before you open your mouth!

Uverse Promotions $300-$400 Available Consumers

Uverse promotions of $300-$400 from RicksCouponPicks are also available for all consumers directly who want to get the uverse tv service. AT&T Uverse does beat cable hands down. Due to its interactive DVR, Remote Wireless Programming are recording plus many other features as well.

Riverside, CA: U-verse Internet routinely slow after 10pm

I live in a condo, and U-verse works just fine during the day and even during "peak hours" when people are home from work. But it sucks if you use the internet late night. The speeds are comparable to 2600 baud. Almost zero connectivity. I am a student at UCR and do a lot of internet research at night, so this situation is a total pain in the ass. Cox cable was so much better for me! If you aren't a night owl, and don't live in an apartment building, U-verse might be fine for you.

But I'll be calling to cancel as soon as I can.

uhh where the hell in

uhh where the hell in riverside did you get any choice other than charter for cable services?

nfl games on uverse 450

I switched from Direct TV with NFL Sunday Ticket to Uverse 450 and have been dealing with my husband and son ever since. What NFL games will they not be able to see? The saleperson told me they can get all of them as they OWN Direct TV. I have yet to confirm this. Please help me understand exactly what we will be able to watch on game night. They like to see all of them!

New NFL REDZONE

AT&T just added the new NFL REDZONE HD to line up. It's in the HD premium tier ($5.00/month). Your husband and son will love it!

They contract with Direct TV

They contract with Direct TV with their packages they do not own them. If you can't get the Uverse services they contract out the cable to Direct TV. If you have Uverse you would have to break out the TV services and go back to Direct TV. Direct TV is the only company that carries the NFL ticket. Hope that helps - a friend in the business.

using 2 DVR's with ATT U-Verse

Was wondering if anyone out there has had any luck using more than 1 DVR (if you can get another DVR) with AT&T's U-Verse system. We also have internet and I noticed that there are 4 cat5 ports located on the rear panel of the server...one of those is connected to the DVR in the living room and I believe that this enables the DVR to record 4 programs at once. I removed the cable from one of the receivers and connected it to the server with cat5 cable and the darn thing worked...picture and sound. I was told by one of the customer service reps that their system does not support more than 1 DVR...I'm starting to wonder if that is true, especially because of the results I got with the cat5 cable. Can someone shed some light on this for me? Thank You.

Using 2 DVRs

We're using 2 DVRs at our house with ATT. I think they just did something new to make it work.

Good luck!

2 dvr's with uverse

First, the 4 ports on the ack ogf the modem are so you can plug-in a total of 4 computers (hardwired). The Modem(server) talks to the tv boxes through the coax.

I was also told that you can have only 1 DVR on thier system. Lame! Verizon fios allows up to 7.

Total Home DVR

To answer all of your questions the total home DVR was unleashed earlier this year allowing up to 8 receivers (which is the most that our system can handle) to have full access to the DVR network within the home. Record 4 shows at one time and record and watch from up to 8 receivers in the home. If FIOS can only do 7 then I guess U-verse is your best bet...especially since DVR is free from the U200 and up. Thanks

You can still have only one

You can still have only one DVR with U-Verse. You can have up to 8 receivers but they are DVRs. They can however access the one DVR. Pretty lame marketing on AT&Ts part.

DVR's

True you can only have one DVR but, all the TV's up to 8 can access that DVR. It can play recorded movies and you can also delete and set recordings from those other TV's. The DVR acts more like a hard drive that the other receivers can access information from...

I don't see how that is bad marketing from AT&T...it's pretty slick to me!

Still LAME

Great, I have 8 receivers. But I can't watch 8 different channels. There are only 4 tuners. Who says we all want to sit around watching moms recorded cooking show? That is where AT&T FAILED.

Just got Uverse and I'm

Just got Uverse and I'm having trouble maintaining a good connection. The downloads with their internet start fine but then slow down, like during my games the lag out after a few minutes and when I stream my netflix it does fine at first but then the connection slows down.... anybody else experiencing this? Currently have the U200 with Pro internet and unlim.phone, but temporarily increased internet to elite from pleading for a trial of it before going to Cox... any similar experiences out there?

We gave been experiencing the

We gave been experiencing the same problem... however, this only happened once we hit our year anniversary with this service. For the past month, our bandwidth has been inconsistant. We are now unable to watch our Netflix instant movies and playing our XBox or PS3 online. I have done everything I can from home to address connectivity issues, however, it is still not working. Everytime we call AT&T we get disconnected or the office that addresses this issue is closed.
I'm getting fed up with this part of our sevice.

Anyone else have this issue corrected?

Key to good signal &

Key to good signal & reception is to get a good installer. First installer + repair tech attempted to run the Uverse gateway off the phone Jack closest to where I was positioning the gateway. After about a week of “Works then does not work” I got an installer who knew his stuff. Told me problem was trying to run off phone wire in the house. Concern was quality of wire in the home. Builder may have split it in the walls, etc. He also found about 100 ft of phone line coiled in my crawl space where the buried line comes into the house from the connection on the outside. Being close to Maximum distance to get Uverse the 100 ft may have pushed me over the limit. Makes sense as Union guys outside would say signal to the house was great.

I have a newer home wired for cable in every room. Experienced installer ran line directly from outside Phone box to outside to Cable box then connected gateway to cable. After that all signals in the house were carried by Coax. Boots up fast even if Outage. Crystal clear picture & great HD quality.

Union guys was the one to get

Union guys was the one to get the signal good to the home before you even seen the Uverse tech.Thats why you have a uverse tech who deals with the inside installation and a outside tech who keep the your network running.

Cancel tech appt. with uverse

After 2 hs of hearing how wonder. and how much $$$$ we 'll be saving, i scheduled the IT "Day" , for tom. am Saturday. My techie husband didn"t like the idea of switching, just to save an alleged $ 150 between TW (premium pack HD rec, 3 tvs $ 161 ) 2 tel lines and DSL 6 (2 sep. modem) with AT&T. "Ain't broken, don't fix it". Today something on my mind told me check what it is out there.... It was TOOOOO GOOD TO BE TRUTH!!!!!! I told my hu, that the chatting out there was terrible, real people with scary stories.... So we decided to wait .. it's not worthy ,just for that $$$$, to go into trouble. already exp. problems with DSL sometimes, and to get it back takes l0 mins ( tip: ask for american rep, will go smothly, and don't forget those stupid sec. questions like, " who is your favorite actor", that time took 1 HR!!!!! to get back!!!). Just before making the call to cancel appt., we got the "friendly reminder" over the phone. Called the 1-800, and took 3 persons!!! 10 mins to get the order number for the cancel. that was a reminder of what will happen to have them in all connections. Thanks for all of you out there telling your stories and hope you solved your problems.

I have U-verse

I live in San Diego and have had U-verse for 3 months and I hate it. If you've gotten use to having more than one dvr in your home you will be VERY UNHAPPY w/U-verse. Not only can you only record on the main box you can only pause, rewind or stop live shows on the DVR television. All the other boxes in your home only function to choose programs. What a colossal pain that is. If you're watching a program in your bedroom and decide you'll finish it the next night--guess what? You have to go to where the main tv is located to record the show. Want to pause a live show to 'do whatever'? Fugget about it unless you're watching the main dvr tv. I hate this thing and will be switching back to Time Warner. No amount of complaints or pleadings to AT&T have done any good. BTW, if you're thinking of hooking up a Tivo to overcome this problem, fugget about that too. Tivo won't work w/U-verse.

you can choose any show to

you can choose any show to record from any tv in your home and can play it back from any tv. I have this service and use it every day. It is true that you can only pause live tv from the main DVR. ALSO, you can record up to 4 shows all at the same time, so remember that if you are recording two shows already that only leaves two left to watch or record, if you have a lot of TV's, some one might not be able to watch tv.

I CAN"T BELIEVE THE LIES CABLE TELLS

First of all, The biggest lie I've read is that Uverse's bandwidth is lower than cable. This is such BULL*^#@. Those coax cables time warner and cox use are from the frickin 80's. Come on give me a break... The bandwidth over fiber is huge...do your research PLEASE...The Coax cable companies claim to have a fiber rich network, MORE BULL@#*!...UVERSE IS SECOND TO NONE. TIME WARNER AND COX ARE VERY SCARED...They're retention offers are through the roof. They'll give you a discount and suck your "you know what" just to keep you....hahaha

PRICE (most expensive) 1.Time warner - taking the prize
2.COx - a litlle better
3. UVERSE - definitely more affordable

QUALITY 1. UVERSE - just experience it for yourself
2. COX and Time Warner - the same old stuff - "will never compare to verizon Vios and att Uverse"!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Uverse runs cat 5 to your

Uverse runs cat 5 to your modem. Cat5 is faster and holds more data than coax. The problem is they don't run cat5 to all the cable boxes in the house. It's my understanding that coax can run at 100mbps, and cat 5 at 1gbps.

heh

The problem with Uverse that we noted was the way they wire apartment complexes. If you have a house, you share bandwidth with no one. If you have AT&T dsl in an apartment, you share bandwidth with no one. If you have AT&T Uverse in an apartment complex, YOU SHARE BANDWIDTH WITH EVERYONE IN THE COMPLEX. During peak hours (such as, say, 6-8 pm, right after everyone gets home from work), our signal would drop out completely, take 10-20 minutes to come back on, and then, 10-20 minutes later, drop out again...and again... and again. After 1 month, we couldn't stand it, and got rid of it.

Also re: DVRs - the tech who installed Uverse in our apartment told us a DVR was "necessary to the service" and insisted on installing one - even though our package did not include it. They tried to charge us for it. I refused to pay, and they backed right down.

Also, although it was "necessary" for a tech to come out and install (even though my husband is a technical person with the background and know-how to have done it himself), when we got rid of Uverse, they just sent us a box and told us to pack everything up and send it back. Problem: the box they sent wasn't large enough for the DVR alone, much less the rest of the equipment, and it took 5 months of repeated complaints to get them to send us out another box - during which time they charged us as if we had purchased said equipment, and it took another 6 months (by which time, we had moved to an entirely different apartment!) to get the charges reversed.

Finally, the AT&T tech who wired our building came back out 6 months later (about a month after we got rid of our Uverse account), after hours on a Saturday, claiming he was there to "wire your building for Uverse". Turns out there's a well-known scam running (according to our county sheriff's department) where AT&T techs use their position as a tech to case apartments for valuables, and then, later, to gain entry to apartment buildings, and breaking into units where no one is home. Because people have heard something about Uverse, they tend to let the techs into the building, even though the tech doesn't claim to be there for them, specifically. We didn't let the guy in; we called AT&T and then the sheriff - both of whom verified that we had done the right thing, as there was no service order for our building. Watch out.

AT&T Techs casing Apartments???

why in the hell would an at&t uverse technician scout peoples homes and apartment to steal your belongings??? As an AT&T regional Manager- did you know that the average uverse tech makes atleast $40.00 an hour??? with as much overtime as they could stand??? Most of my techs made well over $100,000 last year (2008). why in the hell would they even think about stealing your $600 flat screen to run the risk of losing their job??? try another scare tactic please! Question- are you a Republican?

Sounds like you guys are

Sounds like you guys are paying your techs too much- Is that why you charge so much for cable?

huh?

Sounds like they are - they have have jobs to pay their bills and all of our new health plan. Are you Democrat?

Coax vs Fiber

You are right about the fibre but where Uverse lost it is when they run fiber to a node in your neighborhood and from there twisted copper telephone wire to your home. This concept is flawed hence the HD is simply not as good as Cable or Satellite.

In other cities the local telco runs the fiber right outside your door. If AT&T had done this with a bit more investment foresight they would have blown cable away for good.

I reluctantly switched back to TWC due to the poor quality of signal and Internet.

Kidding

You must be kidding. The copper cabling can support gigabit plus bandwith and if you look on the control console on your U-verse box, you'll notice that it is actually using several Hundred Mbps already. It is is trandmitting and receiving at about 300 Mbps and it uses much of the bandwith to stream live television via TCP/ IP Protocal and it can at any time use the rest of the bandwith for internet transmission. The only reason you are limited 18 Mbps is that is the practical limittation placed on the box via software. If you had the right premissions, you could program all of the bandwith to the internet connection.

Your a Knucklehead

Coax affords a great deal more frequency spectrum than does twisted-pair. Traditional coaxial cable television networks generally support 370MHz. Newer deployments, such as hybrid fiber coax (HFC) architectures, support 750MHz or 1,000MHz systems. (HFC is discussed in detail in Chapter 12.) Therefore, coax provides from 370 to 1,000 times more capacity than single twisted-pair. With this additional capacity, you can carve out individual channels, which makes coax a broadband facility. Multiplexing techniques can be applied to coax to derive multiple channels. Coax offers slightly better performance than twisted-pair because the metallic shielding protects the center conductor from outside interferences; hence the performance of coax is on the order of 10–9 (i.e., 1 in 1 billion) bps received in error. Amplifiers need to be spaced every 1.5 miles (2.5 km), which is another improvement over twisted-pair, but it still means a substantial number of amplifiers must be deployed throughout the network.

Cox vs. Uverse

Well I made the switch. Have had Cox for 7 years and was tired of paying $130/month for cable, DVR & internet. Called Cox to cancel and they tried to talk me out of it of course--their biggest argument was that I'd be losing the Padres. Big whoopee doo, boo hoo! Oh, and that AT&T charges for Hi-Def while at Cox it's free. Well, when I mentioned that AT&T doesn't charge for DVR like Cox does, the retention rep was put right back in his place. I'm quite happy with the U-200 and realize that eventually I'll be paying about $110 total, but with the cashback incentives I'm saving quite a lot.

I think it's wonderful to be able to access my DVR from anywhere and record something I may have forgot to. Cox is unfortunately way behind and was not my friend in the digital age, in fact they were awful. Calling them on a Saturday for help involved 30+ min hold times.

My internet speed with AT&T is no slower than Cox, save on the upload, which is only slightly worse than Cox was. I did speed tests before/after the UVerse install.

If I were a Cox executive, I'd be really worried now. The monopoly is over.

it did not work for me.

it did not work for me.

Switching back from Uverse to TWC

I don't like TWC but......
Reasons:
-True HD picture quality far superior with TWC. I need to fully enjoy my expensive Flatscreens investment.
-Uverse suffer hugely with out of sync sound and vision it can be so far out that watching music, dance, sports is a joke.
-No momentary glitches with Internet TWC connection.

I really wanted to stay with Uverse but just can't due to the above reasons and will try again if a company brings the fiber right outside my door.

One more reason

I am a Tennis nut and despite many promises Uverse does not carry The Tennis channel

uverse as well as cox

I currently have my phone, internet and tv through Cox.I also have Direct T.V. I would like to get rid of Direct T.V. and have uverse installed. ATT tells me that they can not install it that way. While it is available it would have to run on the same coax as Cox. It is either one or the other.Other representatives tols me that doing what I want would be no problem.
So far I've talked to at least 6 agents with ATT and there was no consistency at all. I was also told that a supervisor would not be able to help me as they did not know the technology involved. This does not give me a warm fuzzy feeling about doping business with thm.

COAX is not required for

COAX is not required for AT&T Uverse. It can also be run using Cat5e. All of the Uverse STBs have both a COAX and Ethernet jack.

AT&T U-Verse

We have the AT&T U-Verse and like it pretty well over all. But the music is just terrible! The format is bad...I don't want to know who this artist sounds like or who followed them or who they're following. They don't give the year of a song or any really useful information. Also, it seems like they play anything on any channel. Was listening to the Classic Rhythm & Blues and they played Isaac Hayes singing "The Look of Love". Please!!!

Time Warner Cable Increased Cable costs by 35% IN Carlsbad CA

I am thinking about switching to Uverse. I have AT&T for my home phone and for internet and I am using TWC for TV and HD service. I noticed in Feb my bill was higher, and I had heard TWC was going to increase costs around 8 to 10 percent. Well, in Carlsbad my increase works out to 34.5 percent. I called and they basically told me that since I was an Adelphia customer before and I was getting a really good deal for the past few years so they had to get my rates in line with other customers in the San Diego area. I told them I would probably leave and they honestly didnt even care. The women told me that I can bring my equipment by the office and they will stop the billing....nothing about staying or anything remotely close to customer support. Seems weird in these economic times that they wouldnt even try to get me to stay.

OK...now that I am done with my rant.....can anyone confirm my questions below about AT&T U-verse in Carlsbad or San Diego.....

A) Will I lose the padres games? Not a huge deal...but it would be nice to have.
B) Can I record more than one hd channel at a time? If I can only record one at a time, can I at least switch away and watch something else?
C) How much HD shows in hours can the DVR hold? My TWC box holds less than 15 hours of hd time.

Thanks for any info....

rates went up for you

rates went up for you because your original adelphia service infrastrucure was so outdated and behind the times. time warner had to come in and completely revamp your entire system. the rates went up slightly because of this. also, time warners rates recently went up a few dollars due to the channels they provide getting more money on the new renewal contracts. at&t and sattelite rates went up also because of this.

if you go to at&t and get the same level of service that you have now with time warner (i.e. internet speed, number of channels, extra tv's, etc) then your bill will be higher.

you will lose the padres channel. at&t does not offer it nor will they ever offer it. they have tried in court to get cox cable to release it to them but the courts ruled against it citing cox is the owner and will make decision to offer to competitors or not.

i beleive with at&t, you can only record 1 hd program at a time. some people have said that this is not true now as a software update may of fixed this issue. but i'm pretty sure the issue is not with software rather it is with at&ts available bandwith which is very low coming to your home. your current dvr box may be an older model and you should try switching it out with an updated version. my time warner dvr box allows me to record about 80 hours of regular programming and 35 hours of hd programming. call back into customer service and ask for the "retention" department. they should offer you something with a good price so you don't have to make the switch. good luck

AT&T UVerse Service Irving TX

If you are thinking about AT&T UVerse, please rethink your decision. I have had the service for 1 1/2 years. When it was first installed, I had to have them come multiple times to fix the system. Now, I have had techs out on 3/10 (1 inhouse and 1 line INR), 2 techs on 3/11, 1 tech on 3/17 and am waiting for another tech to come tomorrow morning. Each time the techs are scheduled, you are given a four hour window of when they will arrive. I have spent way too much of MY time for this. I have requested supervisors and complained to the FCC to no avail. Each time, you call in you are placed at the back of the queue (basically, they open a new ticket - tech arrives and leaves - they close the ticket). This process allows them to report high resolution stats to management.

AT&T U-verse vs Time Warner Service Arlington TX

I have had U-verse for better than a year. Yes, there are problems on the front, dimwits on the phone - Employers pay peanuts they get monkeys.
But when you get it all debugged it's great. Set it up to record the whole series of shows that you like. Look a month ahead and set it up to record those individual programs that you want. When you watch them, fast forward through the glut of idiotic commercials. I'm an insomniac so I keep a backlog of recorded programs. 2:30am: In comfortable recliner, watch a show and when the commercial comes on YOU GO TO SLEEP.
Works great. Remember. you're still dealing with AT&T, the company you learned to hate years ago. They're working to change it but remember Stupidity in Management is the norm, intelligent management is a rarity no matter what the industry. Had Time Warner before. They were billing me for FOUR MONTHS that I had paid. Even after I took the trouble to go to the bank, paid a dollar each for copies of my canceled checks and sent TWC copies of both sides of the checks. Yes, AT&T is a pain in the posterior when you have to call them, but then so is TXU and Arlington Utilities.

Same problem with uverse

I am in Mesquite. I am waiting for my 5th tech to come out tomorrow. System just freezes up and I lose service, have to reboot the modem takes 5 minutes to come up. Very unreliable phone and internet. did you ever get your issues resolved?

u-verse issues

We had the exact same thing & had numerous techs out. Finally got a good one who stripped the wires behind the outlets & got a good new connection & we've had NO problems since. I bet it's the wiring behind your walls. Since ATT goes through the phone lines in our homes it is a common problem. Good luck. Ask them to try that!

Texas U-Verse Problems

Mesquite and Irving are miles apart and what you both reported is troubling. Please go to www.att.com and send an email to the company to ask what the problem is and wait for an emailed response. Then, post the responses you get. One question you want to definitely ask is---are there specific TX areas where U-Verse is not possible or is erratic? See if there's a coverage map for the Metroplex, Mesquite, Rockwall and Rowlett. In the email, you also both want to ask if the fiber system is fully in place to accommodate this technology.

If there are validated problems, ask for credits for the time the system didn't work and let them know you need to cancel to some other technology that works in your area.

PLEASE LET US KNOW.

carrier? Wiring! Pet Peeve

What is the input device for the U Verse? I have heard that they come through the local cable company, and another person told me they come through DirecTv Dishes. I am wondering what is the correct input for this system, or is there multiple source availability depending upon area...

For the most part, by the way, all the carriers are jumping on each other's territory now. Phone companies now carry cable and internet, Cable companies carry internet and phone, and Entertainment Corporations carry phone internet, and cable. Any Tom Dick or Harry is now a Utility Company, with all kinds of crazy packages and incentives for basically the same crappy programming the others are offering. Face it, DirecTv, Comcast, or Time Warner all show The Tonight Show at exactly the same time, same program, same crap. So, you all want to jump ship to the new deal, the cheapest setup, etc.. All the companies use the same wiring in your home. They have to. After all, your home already should have cable and phone, today's homes also will be ethernet ready. But why worry? The companies will bring you a wireless router, and set it up for you.

Here is one thing also I'd like to discuss. I go into neighborhoods all the time where there will be ten wireless routers in one block, all set up with security. So, there are ten people paying fifty bucks a month for internet service, that could all run off of one guy's wireless router. This is happening all over the U.S. Personally, I set mine up, and told my neighbors to use mine free. Two are, and I am glad. They give me barbeque and beers instead, which is a lot more than I get from Time Warner.

U-Verse travels via fiber

U-Verse travels via fiber optics to the local routers. From there, the signal travels through AT&T's normal phone lines to the houses on the telephone poles and will come in to your house through a CAT-5 if available or through standard phone line - mine is through phone line. Once inside your house, all of the U-verse data (cable, internet, phone) gets plugged directly into the 'router' -if you will - which acts as your phone line connection(s), your internet modem AND wireless internet router, as well as the 4 television tuners that one contract will allow. All of the cable boxes are slaves to that main unit and are connected via CAT 5 (if your house is wired) or through Coax - which I'm finding out is probably not the desirable method.

Just a little note on your neighborhood internet...thats a very altruistic thing you're doing for your neighbors...and a VERY ballsy thing too! It's YOUR butt that will be doing hard time for anything illegal that goes on through your connection. Its not just music, film production companies are going after people for downloading pirated movies (I actually have a close friend who received some legal papers over a recent 'batman' movie that he downloaded before it came out on DVD... not cool). How about someone's kid decides to order something that is not allowed in the US over your internet connection? Or how about the dreaded pervert...thats not stuff you want your name anywhere near. I'm not here to scare you or act like a paranoid freak but at this day in age, you gotta keep your guard up. It seems as though these days we can leave a bigger carbon footprint with a computer than we do with our own 2 feet...just some friendly advice.

Paranoid fearmongering.

Paranoid fearmongering.

Actually...sadly...it isn't

Unfortunately you are legally liable for traffic that goes over your internet connection. Besides, it almost certainly violates just about any EULA that you have with your ISP.

To not secure that connection would only provide further evidence of culpability in the event it is used for illegal activities. Securing the connection would show due diligence at the least, but still isn't a 100% guarantee you won't end up in court. It's nice to be friendly, but in a litigious society it's better to be safer than sorry in this particular case...potential for lots of loss with little to gain.

www dot dslreports dot com/faq/8463

Providing internet service

Providing internet service through your line is also a violation of the Terms of Service. You are operating as a service provider. It's (legally) the same thing as putting a splitter on your incoming cable line, and running coax to all your neighbor's houses.

no wireless signal

I JUST HAD U VERSE TV AND INTERNET INSTALLED. I HAVE 3 SET TOP BOXES (ALL HOOKED TO THE GATEWAY WITH CAT 5) THE GATEWAY HAS A WIRELESS ROUTER BUILT IN BUT IT DOSENT BROADCAST A SIGNAL. I DIRECT WIRED THE GATEWAY TO MY COMPUTER AND CHECKED THE SETTINGS. IT SHOWS THAT THE WIRELESS IS ENABLED. A TECH CAME OUT AND REPLACED THE GATEWAY BUT THE NEW ONE HAS THE SAME PROBLEM. NO WIRELESS SIGNAL AND THE WIRLESS LIGHT ON THE FRONT NEVER COMES ON. THE TECH SAID HE HAS NO IDEA WHAT THE PROBLEM IS AND THERES NOTHING HE CAN DO. IS IT POSSIBLE THAT THIS GATEWAY IS BAD TOO?

Wireless and 3800HGV-B Residential Gateway (RG)

I just got mine yesterday and spent several hours noodling through the web pages on the RG and then getting my wife's IBM T-41 connected wirelessly.

1) You don't get the wireless light until there REALLY is a connection. She has an older 802.11b connection, so I set WEP, Shared, and used the passkey from the RG. On the laptop, WEP, Shared instead of Open, and entered the passkey from the RG as a passphrase (10 character). That got her on-line. She's running Windows XP SP3.

2) D-Link wireless is different and I'm still fighting with that. My daughter has a Sony laptop without internal wireless, so I bought a DWL-G650 (which works fine with my D-Link and Linksys (with DD-WRT v23)). She's running Windows 2000 Pro.

Internet/cable service problems

I just wanted to say, that I read the article on negotiating your internet and/or cable bill with the company that you go through. It stated that "you had nothing to loose!" Wrong! I did what it advised and sent my cable company an email, advising them, that I was considering changing my internet service provider! That got my internet and almost my cable, shut off! Yes, I was a couple of months behind on paying my bill, but I had called the cable company three times since last Tuesday, advising them, that I would pay my bill at a certain date, next month and that I was thinking about switching my internet service to another company! Well, the next 2 days, my internet was shut off. I called the company again and advised them, that I spoke with a customer service rep. last Tuesday, about my bill! Well, that customer service rep. stated, that the previous customer service rep. was wrong! Nothing was ever mentioned to me, about my service being turned off, until I got home and my internet was off. then, a couple of hours later, the cable man came to my door step, to shut off my cable service! Again, no warning about this! So, the moral of the story, be careful what you say to your cable co., it may bite you in the butt next time!

deductions off U-verse bill

we had numerous connection issues & when they finally were resolved (I gave it one week w/no problems then called billing) they gave me almost 400.00 of my next bill equal to a month of services plus a month of free HD. I was happy with that but also with Hurricane Ike they also gave me a nice outage discount HOWEVER....IF YOU DON"T CALL, THEY DON"T OFFER! So call...what can it hurt?

dumbass pay your bill next

dumbass pay your bill next time, they aren't getting paid for the service you use. you really think they care if you go, no. they shut the service off and will send the bill to collections if not paid so your credit is affecting, that is juts plain stupidity on your part.

Cable Compnay's

You were behind a few months on your Cable bill #1 # 2 Any Compnay will first alert you be Mail or or by phone pay this amount by such date or your service will be disconnect and a letter would coem to you by mail. Don;t waste you r time wiht Cabel TV ..... Dish Netowrk offers packes $9.99 amonth you heard right. I use DSL 6.0 Local phone servcie phoen AT&T Yes Land line is much better and do esnto haev all the trafic cbael internet does......

I'm curious did you attempt

I'm curious did you attempt to negotiate your past due bill down with a threat to leave to Uverse?

In either case, you have got to be kidding me! You were a couple of months over due on your bill and you had the unmitigated cajones to attempt to extract a price concession from them? Damn right they shut you off, as well they should.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with the advice given in the article with regards to negotiating a better monthly deal, or some concessions like a few months free or reduced monthly rate for premium channels or services, but only an idiot would think they could extract any concession from a cable provider when they owe months of cable bills.

What on earth would make you think that any cable company would offer any incentives to what is essentially a deadbeat, or freeloader, based on a threat to leave? Hell you're not paying your bill now, you'd be a fool to expect that their reaction would be anything but - see ya later bye.

Concessions, and freebees are for customers in GOOD standing, not customers who cost them money to service. That means you, who hasn't paid a bill in months, don't qualify for anything but service termination. Promising to pay doesn't mean jack, ESPECIALLY, when it's accompanied by a threat to dump their service. What you essentially told them is you have no intention of paying your bill in favor of moving to Uverse. You may not have said the words, you may not even have meant those words, but that's what you conveyed to them.

Your stupidity is not to blamed on the advice given in the article. The blame lies solely in our hands.

You seem extremely clueless on the one hand to expect they would grant you a concession under your circumstance, but even more so for expecting that anyone would see the cable company, or the advice given in this article, as the villain here as opposed to you.

Clearly your problem isn't

Clearly your problem isn't with "what you said" to your cable company or your negotiating "skills". This article is probably only directed at people who PAY THEIR BILL REGULARLY.
If you aren't paid up, the cable company has leverage on YOU. I hope your comment doesn't spread needless FUD because consumers should be empowered to negotiate and make choices.

Uverse

I've had uverse internet only for almost a year. It is better than ATT dsl that I had before. The upload speed is almost 1mb/sec...that's 3X better. Also, reliability is better. My gateway went bad shortly after getting it. They replaced it. Since then I've experienced almost no down times. Every once-in-a-while I have to unplug the gateway and plug it back in. But that's only a few times a year. My 1.5 download speed is adequate for watching TV on my computer. I don't want to pay more for the higher speeds. I'm happy.

Watching two Simultanious channels for 92109 San Diego?

Can anyone comment if watching two HD channels simultaniously in North PB (92109) is supported?

nope! i live in south pb

nope! i live in south pb (92109) too. at&t claims it works but mine and a friends won't (like many of the other u-verse features). i'm gonna switch back to time warner cable. lower price and better service. i saw the time warner door-to-door guys out here just last week so i'm gonna call the number they left with me and check into this special promotion they offer me that is only available at the door. looks like its gonna be more channels, cash back, way faster internet, lower price and the dvr will record two hd channels no problem!

digital converter needed for analog TV using U-verse service?

I have a father in law that doesn't want to get rid of his older ANALOG television. Before he gets U-verse he wants to know if he will still need the digital converter box. He currently uses the digital converter box using cable. Thx in advance.

Converter Boxes and U-Verse

Nope. Their box will work just fine with his analog tv w/o the need for another box (converters). Just don't spend the extra $10/mon on HD as his TV won't handle it. When/if he upgrades tv's, then he can add the HD and get even better picture. The converter boxes are only necessary for those people using antennas for their source of picture. Cable, satellite, anyone "providing" a paid service will make sure their equipment will work for their customers. No worries! :)

I am thinking of switcing over to AT&T u-verse . Hope to have nice experience

Att&T service is my NIGHTMARE

I'v had At&T uversive close to a year now, it's getting so bad, many times I don't bother calling them out any more. They have been out so many times that I now know what to do to get my 'SERVICE' working again. There 'Computer' you first get when you call gets everthing you ask for all wrong, by the time you get to theright Dept. your so ''Fustaded'(?) 'your' yelling at the person thats TRYING TO HELP YOU, THATS AFTER GETTING DISCONETTED 2-3 TIMES BEFORE YOU GET TO THE RIGHT DEPT. Sorry for the caps, I'm so tired.
I have more to say about A&T service, it's just to late now. But AT&T does some 'good' points. I'v called so many times that many of the 'Customer Service' people & I ave become 'Friends'. Like I know 'Amy' is going is going into the hospital tomorrow/today, since it's after 12a.m. in So.Ca. to have a few minor lumps removed from her liver. Or every night/day at 12:03a.m. our T.V. will freeze, so we can make sure our watces, or alarms, ect. all are set at the right time.
I hope you do have an nice experience. For me I'm DONE with paying them for 'NO SERVICE'. I just hope my Computer will work tomorrow so I can look for a 'Better' Cable Co. Tonight I'm just too tired,, I'll keep checking my Computer durning the day, sonner or later it will work. Another 'minor' thing is count on your T.V. to 'Feeze-up' at least 6 times a day, it could be for a few mins or as long as 15-20 mins. Good Luck with At&T. If this helps you, I live in Simi Valley,CA.
When I 'can' I'll read more posts. Goodnight, Pegi

Uverse in NE Ohio

Read all these posts but see none from my area. I`ve been a TWC user for a number of years and have become so disenchanted with both their service and customer service that I don`t even call anymore when something goes amiss. I know it`s hopeless to get through to talk to a human without a long, long wait and then about a week to get service scheduled. I suffer through pixelated TV so bad as to be unwatchable a lot of the time. My internet connection regularly drops the IP or slows down to a snails pace (even at times slower than dial up). So, I`m more than anxious for a try at Uverse. I`ve asked everyone from AT&T service truck drivers to phone and internet sites when it might be available on my street. No one can tell me. Two blocks up the street has it and these people are VERY satisfied with both the reception and the customer service.
I have a couple of questions that some here might be able to answer for me. I noted in one of the posts about underground lines holding up installation. My phone lines are underground while those up the street are not. New fiber optic underground lines were put in here two or three years ago so I wouldn`t think this would be any hold up but don`t know. Is it?
Another question, does the DSL wireless modem also have Cat 5 ports? I have a wired network that I would like to continue to use as well as the wireless connection.

UVERSE connection.

Uverse in NE Ohio,

I had the same problem getting my UVERSE connected. The Fiber and VRAD box were installed one year and three hundred feet from my house before I could manage to get connected. My undergrounding project for the neighborhood has still not been completed to this day here in San Diego. Request from AT&T for UVERSE was hopeless, no one in AT&T or UVERSE sales seems to know if you can get their service. Guess the elephant AT&T is too big to know at the street level what is possible or not. I argued with AT&T and UVERSE sales that I could get service, all said NO you can't. Finally I demanded that a service Engineer come out and see for himself. He connected a scanning tool to my phone line and said " Sure you can get UVERSE, could have gotten it a year ago, this whole neighborhood is wired for it" He had to get a new wire drop from the pole because old wire was parallel and they needed, unshielded twisted pair, 6 strand wire used for Ethernet communications. After the correct wire type was installed, a UVERSE Tech came out and hooked me up, great guys, excellent service. I must say that at first I was impressed with the technology, set top box has wireless for computer ISP only, not video. I shut the wireless service off because I don't want my neighbors hacking into my systems. I also enabled routers (off by default) so I could run my seperate Linux firewall PC. TV picture quality is great, HD is great too if you have a HD TV. If you don't have a HD TV don't pay for the HD service. There are still some glitches, video hangs occasionaly and I have to reset gateway device once or twice a month because I loose the connection to the ISP. What is neat is that through your computer's web browser you can customize the gateway and set top box, see your account online, pay bill, add or remove services yourself. No phone calls, menus or people to talk to. You can even disconnect or cancel your UVERSE service! Love this feature. The Bad news is one HD channel viewing or recording at a time, TIVO will not work with set top box, No NEWSGROUPS service available and it now actually cost more than my local cable! The competition with COX cable has forced them to act like a company instead of a monopoly and that's great! Some day I will go back to cable when it offers a lifetime cost of $50 a month for Internet and TV. If you want to try UVERSE I suggest you demand they install it, if they say "Can't be done" tell them "send Engineer to prove it" That's the only way I got service. Good luck to you!
Stephen

Uverse in NEO

Took your advice and had an engineer come out. Found out I was too far from the box and could not get a strong enough signal to get all available services. They said MAYBE they would install a closer box this summer. Thanks for answering. Now at least I know where I stand.

Uverse in NEO

You probably can still get U-Verse, they can "Gang" the two sets of twisted pair to increase the distance/speed. Usually they only use one set of the two for hookup.
Regards,
Stephen

Uverse in NEO

They actually told me this but said I couldn`t watch and tape HD at the same time.

Uverse in NEO

I think what they meant was that you can only DVR record the HD channel you're watching at the same time. This is true for all of U-Verse customers now. You can still watch HD and record another SD channel. The HD is only on like 30 channels out of the 300 available. I signed up for HD, bought and returned a HD LCD panel just to test SD vs HD Quality. I loved the the HD but paying extra monthly fees and buying a HD TV then dumping my 720i $2500.00 Plasma did not make sense to me. After returning the HD LCD I went online to my account and canceled the HD option. Must say I love the online WEB control of your account! No phone calls, menu items or waiting time like you have with cable and phone companies when asking a question or changing something with your account. I am happy with the Plasma and SD. Your biggest complaint would be occasional picture freezing for 3 to 4 seconds a few times a week. Still, you should get a better quality picture and the 5.1 suround sound signal. It's the same price as cable in my area, San Diego for the same service as cable.

The pixelation is probably

The pixelation is probably due to the wiring in your home being old or faulty. Replace it and you should be fine. Or you could always get the AT&T U-verse installed. They will install new wiring. Then you can cancel your AT&T and go back to the superior/ higher-bandwith product TWC offers for a lower rate.

Pixelation

Actually the cables into the house have been replaced twice in the past three years. Inside cables were checked by TWC also and given a clean bill of health. Last time I called (about a year ago) they told me they had fixed a problem in the main line and I no longer had a problem. They canceled my service call (without telling me) and insisted I no longer had a problem. That`s when I gave up calling them and decided to just live with the crappy service until I could get something better.

Pixels

Eventhough the wiring in the house is new.. the issue could how the wiring was done. Here is one of the best examples of how any RF signal works...

Imagine you start with a river (your main coax line) and you put a fork in it (coax splitter), now you have 2 smaller streams with half as much water in each. Every time you put another fork in your stream, the amount of water goes down, and so does the speed. Assuming there are no rocks (kinks in the cables, or bad segments in the wires) your bandwith only decreases by half, each time you split it.

Check every coax connection, make sure it is sealed and steated properly. Make sure that all the unused connections are terminated using a 75Ohm coax terminator (radio shack or Lowes). check to make sure there is no "extra" coax bundled anywhere, and look for kinks in the coax. The more you split off, the crappier the signal...

A clean bill of health means they probably checked the resistance on the cable.. if it was within "spec" then your are cleared.. Although interference from internal and external sources.. I.E. coax running paralell with electrical lines in your wall is not discovered by just checking resistance.

Hope that helps.

Idiot

First off Cox and Time Warner have tools to tell if you are in a UVERSE area. Know why? Because ATT says that everyone can get UVERSE until their set up and they slap a DISH on the side of their house. Discounts are good but dont call just to get one, that will screw you in the long run . what I mean is layoffs, financial crunches, and retirement. When you need it most , most of these cable companies will help you lower the bill . Use it up on a temporary discount and your npt eligible from getting any more promos for at least a year. Compare your AFTER TAX , SURCHARGE, FEES , FCC CHARGES, etc. 9 out of 10 times to equal service including internet speeds, hd, channels, phone features with long distance cable is always the way to go.

uverse really usucks

i was scheduled for installation on Saturday between 12-2pm to be installed with uverse tv and internet. i received a call around 1pm that they were behind and wouldn't be able to make it out. we rescheduled for the next day, Sunday for 8-10am. at 11am i received a call that they were behind and that they would let me know when an installer would be available. at 12pm i received a call from the installer saying he was outside. i told him not to bother, that my time is valuable and he should pound dirt. i'll stick with comcast for now.

SPORTS PACKAGES

NO NBA LEAGUE PASS, NO BUSINESS FROM ME!!!! i was ready to switch till they told me that they didnt have that Package.

AT&T - following the freebees

Don't count on following the freebies if you're working with AT&T. I subscribed to the "free" month of cable when they were promoting the U-Verse. Installation was free, 1 month cable free, free DVR for the month & a $100 rebate. The only stipulation was that you keep the "free" cable for 30 days, at the end of which you may cancel or change plans. The sales person prompted me to take the most expensive plan at $125 because, after all, it was free. I asked all the right questions and got all the right answers; all untrue.

Problem #1: After signing papers I was told that I would have to be home for a 4-hour window for the installation that would take 4-6 hours. I waited 2 hours, the installation took 4.

Problem #2: You cannot even enter the rebate code to collect the rebate until the 29th day. At that point you are told that in order to actually collect the rebate you must agree to the terms of service...those terms are that you KEEP the cable plan.

Problem #3: I was told by the sales person that if I decided to cancel the cable I could still keep the internet service - also not true. When I found out the rebate was a scam I tried to cancel only the cable because I didn't want to incur the $125 for the upcoming month. If you cancel the cable, you can't keep the internet service.

Problem #4: I was told that if I decided not to keep the U-verse I could switch back to my DSL internet service without a problem; also not true. I was told by customer service that my internet service had been switched back to DSL (I re-setup my box myself). A week later, still trying to get my DSL service to work I got someone on the line who said it required a technician because when you get U-verse they disconnect wiring for DSL.

Problem #5: When I had the conversation about switching back to DSL I was told they no longer have my previous "plan" and my bill increased by $5/month for the exact same plan I had prior to signing up for U-verse one month earlier. (In one year my free month of cable will cost me $60.)

Problem #6: During that same conversation I asked three times for them to be sure the U-verse was cancelled and that I would never be charged anything for that service. Two days later I received a bill for $140.

Problem #7: They sent boxes for me to ship back the modem & DVR. When I called back to straighten out the billing I found that my service had not been cancelled. They re-cancelled it; two days later sent me another set of boxes asking for the same equipment I already returned. I am just waiting for them to bill me for equipment they think I still have.

Problem #8: I was given a 12-HOUR timeframe during which I had to stay home and wait for them to show up to re-install the DSL they disconnected for U-verse. She showed up at the end of the day.

Problem #9: When they reconnected my DSL they also disconnected my phone line. In an attempt to get that reconnected I was given another 12-hour timeframe to wait for the repair.

This is where I stand now - no phone service and an empty pre-paid UPS box to ship back, I am out 18 hours of my time waiting on service, and $5/month from now on.

I hear you brother

The UVerse tech came out to switch me from TWC. The pic on the TV in the den was beautiful but he couldn't get a pic on the TV in the bedroom. Even tho he was using the same cabling that TWC had been using. On top of that my laptop couldn't connect. He was able to get his laptop to connect but mine never did. Again I never had a problem before or after on TWC. He put everything back to TWC before he left. That was in February. The bill has been cancelled twice by service reps but I'm still getting billed for the past 2 months. They sent me the return boxes even tho the tech took the boxes with him. I should have known better than to deal with ATT. Unfortunately D*TV nor Dish are an option so I'm stuck with TWC.

WOW!

Man I thought AT&T screwed me over with much the same installation goof ups, being 7 hours late and then taking 5 hours to install after which I had no telephone, I did have VDSL, and only one TV worked like it was supposed to but man you got me beat!

Outage in San Diego Starting on 10/09/2008

Is anyone experiencing a problem where you pictures freezes in the San Diego, Carmel Valley area? I spoke with Tech Support and they said there was an outage and they have no ETA. This has been going on for about 24 hrs now. I just wanted to confirm if anyone else in the area was experiencing the same problem.

uverse sucks in San Diego

10-16-08
Hi
I just had AT&T uverse installed in my house in Clairemont in San Diego last week.
The system included phone+ wireless internet+ the new dvr for 3 TV's.
The first day everything worked fine but on the second day the TV's would freeze for a few minutes than come back on. On the third day the system failed competely and I have ben trying to have a tech come out and fix it. I called using my cell phone because my home phone dosn't work anymore and had a tech scheduled between 2-4 pm but no one came over or called. I waited 3 more days and many calls into AT&T but
no results. I finally got the phone number to their dispatch 1-866-351-6364 and had another appt sheduled but they didn't come over either.
No phone or TV or internet for five days now and its still out.
Don't get AT&T uverse here in San Diego, it sucks big time and the service sucks even more.

U-Verse in San Diego

I recomend that you remove power cable from back of residential gateway (Not the set top box), wait 1 minute then plug it back in. I have to do this twice a month for my U-Verse service. If all the LEDs on the gateway come up green you are golden! no tech needed. This is a common problem with cable modems too, a limitation for DHCP and Ethernet devices/protocol comunications.

U-Verse HD Channels

The one thing I would say for sure to ask is to find out how many HD channels is supported in your area. I left Time Warner for U-Verse and you can only record 1 HD channel and then can't watch ANY HD channel except that one you are recording until its over.

They are apparently updating my area to support 2 HD channels but that is still behind Time Warner HD.

I have just installed my

I have just installed my AT&T U-verse quad package two days ago.I have 300 plus channels tv,high speed internet, unlimited digital home phone, and wireless phone all on one bill. my savings come to over $200 per month in bills. i had time warner, aol,t moblie ,and a seperate home phone. the quality of att are better far none than others provide. installation was a breeze.i hope TIME WARNER goes out of business.

U-verse damaging TVs

My mom and my boss both lost their televisions this week. Both subscribe to U-verse and both had the same problem, the video is shot, and both have fairly new TVs. I saw on the internet today that another U-verse customer also lost the video in both of his TVs. In all cases, the TVs are unrepairable. When you spend thousands of dollars, this is costly damage, and I have no doubt that it is U-verse - related. Keep this post in case your TV breaks down all of a sudden.

U-verse damaging TVs

Randy,

I'm with the other folks replying to your blog post - I'm scratching my head trying to come up with a way that any external piece of equipment could DAMAGE your TV. Even if, very unlikely, the U-verse box was sending 110v out the coax or video terminal (the box would've failed before it was ever connected to your TV), I'm not willing to accept that it would just affect the video. I submit that it would destroy the entire TV. And I'm really stretching things to accept that this worst-case scenario could even occur.

What did the TV repair people say the found? Why would they not repair it? If the U-verse box truly damaged (just the video circuits in your) TV I'd think you'd have cause to sue at least for new TV's.

If it turned out not to be due to U-verse, please let us all know what you found out.

Two damaged TV sets

After many initial problems were worked out we love ATT Uverse. (Other than we can't watch Dodger games on FSNPT in San Diego county.) The first TV went out within the first couple of months. Service Tech came out and switched out DVR box and had same problem. He suggested problem was in the TV. The TV was three years old, so we told him to go away, we were going to cancel ATT. Just to test his theory when he left we brought in another TV from another room that was also three years old. TV worked fine...........until now. This TV has now gone out. We have had the ATT Uverse for less than six months and we are out two sets. We thought maybe because they were not HD tv sets that caused the problem, but before we go out and spend money on a new TV we want to know if there are problems with the DVR and what type of TV you have. Too much coincidence for me.

Randy.... please stay in school

There is no way U-verse is going to cause the picture to go out on your television unless it gets struck by lighting and the surge manages to make it to the television through coaxil.

This is FUD or lack of planning...

Every cable system puts pulses down their cable. The reason is immaterial. Why do you think those stupid set top boxes fail so much.

If you pay close to $1,000 for a HD LCD TV, do yourself a favor, get an APC Power Backup Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) for around $119 - $150 to protect your TV. Those devices come with a $100,000 warranty to replace the TV. I would not plug in an expensive TV to either our Power Grid or any company's cable connection without Surge protection. The better UPS systems have surge suppression for both power and Coaxial cable. They DO NOT INTERFERE WITH THE HD SIGNAL AT ALL (thinking ahead for the next FUD argument),

The fact of the matter, with Cable, all their service plans you are throttled back to less than 100Kbps 85 - 95% of the time. (that's downstream). The more important number is your upstream bandwidth. If you are throttled, restricted to less than 40Kbps (all Cable companies do this) Video sputters and you have to wait for it to catch up, more to download, etc...

Do NOT GO BACK TO CABLE, ever. Go to DSL where you do not share the pipe, thus there are no lame excuses to restrict / impede / throttle your service in order to get you to pay more (the only real reason cable companies do this).

At least with DSL you will have a minimum 384K UP, probably more and either 1.5GB or 3 GB down.

BTW the speed test (which is not restricted, duh moment here) means very little, only the maximum amount capable. The speed test showed 9000Kbps (9MB) down and 900Kbps up; however we were throttled 24 X 7 to less than 100Kbps down and 30Kbps up.

How do we see this you ask, not with your off the shelve piece of crap big box store router. Get a firewall/router that will run the open source DD-WRT software. Yes it works for all systems, Mac and Windows also, not just Linux or Unix. With the DD-WRT software installed on a compatible device (check the list on the website and ONLY purchase a "supported device") you will see your ACTUAL bandwidth in real time, 24 X 7. The cable company can NOT lie to you any more. Correct that, they still lie, you just know the truth now.

I watched my bandwidth with my friend's speed test hit 9000 down and 900K up and as soon as it was finished he was once again throttled back to < 100K down and < 30K up.

You wake up when you see it with your own eyes. The DD-WRT software gives a residential firewall/router ($30 - $200) the capabilities of a $300 - $1,000 commercial router.

Every cable company throttles, restricts, impedes, its part of their business model that they always deny doing, but do anyway.

You want and need Fiber to your house or apartment! Get DSL until you can get Fiber. If the cable company ever offers Fiber to your door, insist on guarantees of minimum sustained bandwidths or do not ever buy from them again.

My guess is most of the people complaining about UVerse are shills for or Cable Company employees. UVerse sounds like a viable option, along with DSL to Cable.

Give me fiber or give me death!

damage

I could see if it was just me having two sets damaged after using u-verse, but 3 different people in 3 different states with the same exact problem??? Let's just sit back and see how many more happen.....and no, I don't want to go to school any more. After 27 years, I'm SICK of school!!!

No offense but I also find

No offense but I also find it rather difficult to believe (or at least understand) how this could possibly be related to u-verse. Can you supply some kind of evidence and technical explanation? After all, no matter how new the service is, it's in a lot of homes going to a lot of TVs.

I have the same problem....

I just got a new 52" Samsung LCD and U-verse at the same time and the TV went out after one month. We though maybe we just bought a lemon TV but now ANOTHER TV in a different room will not turn on at all either. I'm starting to think it's AT&T....

I had ATT because they lied to me about the Padre games. They don't carry it so I dumped them. I was really pissed too! Now I see them whining about Cox not giving access to carry it. ATT you suck! They also quit installing Vrads so the fake promise of it being everywhere is just that. FAKE

Connecting set top box wirelessly

I am wondering if it is possible connect the set top box via a wireless adapter (connects to the device via ethernet jack) that is already configured to work with my existing wireless router. Needless to say, the wireless router will be connected to the RG via a cat5 cable.

in other words,

RG <-> Wireless Router <-> Wireless Adapter <-> Set top box

If it does work, would the fact that the wireless adapter is 11b cause any issues in terms of performance/connectivity (i.e. bandwidth concerns for IPTV concept to work) and the fact that it is not directly connected to RG wirelessly but through another wireless router which is wired to RG.

Maybe with N-mimo

I've tried this with 11b, 11g, and SuperG (108Mb) with no success. It looks like a bandwidth issue. I haven't tried with N-mimo yet but given its higher throughput and better duplex handling, it might work.

Good luck!

U-Verse in Mission Hills San Diego

All I can say is I could not be happier with U-Verse. The installer went out of his way to make sure everything was done properly. He installed new RG6 to all of my outlets etc. How and why I can't tell you but I can tell you the HD picture is better on U-Verse. The only problem I have had was my DVR went bad. They sent a tech out within 3 hours and replaced it and I have been trouble free since. Wish I knew where to send kudo's for the installation and service tech's they had work on my service

Any one has contacts for uverse in san diego?

Looks like Stacy Dion has left AT&T this week and Benny Pope is in a different division now. Any one else has another contact in Uverse San Diego county area ...

Thanks

I key your disconnections, san diego TWC customers.

twc in san diego has Price Lock Guarantees that are definitely worth checking out.

if you have basic/standard cable, 1 digital tier, and digital phone with 1 hd box its only 97.37 plus approximately 4.5% in taxes. you can get the extra stuff too, no problem, but that price is locked down for 2 years.

(p.s. i DO work for twc, in disconnections, and whether or not you like twc, its still a good deal (but its not advertised, so ask for it))

U-verse is Blowing Cable out of the water....

I loved the last blogs about U-verse...specially the youtube video; unfortunately, it isn't accurate!!!! In fact, uverse sends 1 channel at a time, this is where the fiber optic lines play a big role (faster channel changing, better quality).
It was a nice touch using the article written last year; Uverse has come a long way since october of 2007.
Best way to compare is to try it our yourself, right now!!!!
No install, No Contracts, No SATELLITE; THIS IS UVERSE!!!! 30 Day Money Back Guarantee!!!!!!!!!!! No RISK!!!!
1 mo. Free TV, $100 cash back, 1 yr. free HD (46 channels are now available, I want to see cable do that; 2HD Streams!!!!!!!!!)
Check to see if your area is available...or call me for details.

desperate at&t advertising on the blog... again?

wow, it is true that at&t is desperate over at their sales team. advertising here on a blog seems a bit unprofessional. heard the whole team has been scrambling away from at&t after the sales numbers dropped and at&t raised the rates. now they are almost all selling for the cable companies. i'm pretty sure that youtube video is accurate due to u-verse only having around 26 mbps to push its video, internet, and phone through. look at the low dsl speeds. try watching an hd u-verse feed and do a bandwith test on your internet speed and you'll see what i mean.

The bandwidth is all right.

AT&T UVerse has 4 packages that I know of currently for San Diego, CA.
bps = bits per second, Downstream/Upstream, TWC = TimeWarner Cable

"Express" is 1.5mbps/1mbps - $?
"Pro" is 3mbps/1mbps - $30
"Elite" is 6mbps/1mbps - $45
"Max" is 10mbps/1.5mbps - $55

I recently had a salesperson for AT&T approach me and convert me from cable. He either lied, or didn't know what he was talking about. He originally sold me the "Pro" package and explained that it was 3 Mega "bytes" down and 1 Mega "byte" up. This immediately caught my attention, I quickly corrected him, and said, "Do you mean bits?", he re-assured me we were talking bytes here. The sales person (who will remain nameless) advised me against telling TWC that I was switching, saying that they are known for interrupting service out of spite. So, I set up cancellation with TWC and leave out that I am being converted over to AT&T, everything gets installed, hooked up, and I find out it was indeed bits we were talking about.

While the "Max" plan is the only plan that stacks up against TimeWarner's internet connection offer (10mbps/1mbps), it costs me currently $115 a month for the U300 TV package (similar to the TV package I had with TWC) and my now "Max" connection. With TWC, I had 10mbps/1mbps + Value pack cable for just under $80 a month. This is only the tip however, I have nagios set up on my routing computer, I am no longer able to monitor many of my services at work due to AT&T's internal traffic filtering. Outbound SMTP is blocked, some ICMP's to certain IP's on my network no longer pass through to the end point and AT&T email relay server uses defacto TLS without STARTTLS over port 465. Additionally, I have noticed a certain degree of packet loss when talking pinging certain hops on within the boundaries of the local AT&T network--this may be normal if they have set up rates on allowed pings, I'm not sure how they're configured.

So far, I am sufficiently dissatisfied with AT&T and I almost feel cheated. I am, at this point, fairly certain that the sales person told me not to tell them about being converted so that I wouldn't learn the truth too soon. I am going to put my tail between my legs, suffer the consequences of my actions and head back to TWC. It is in my personal opinion that I say, do not trust the sales staff. The deal's at AT&T are sound however, for those who do not have the same requirements of their link as I do. One thing to keep in mind is that TV Channel, Internet connection, and Phone lines each have their own set bandwidth. That is to say, they are not shared, as they are in cable. Personally, I have never had a problem with my line being shared on cable. That may not be the case for everyone, and is worth keeping in mind. The fact remains that at this point in time, it is more expensive to use AT&T at a similar speed than it is to use TWC. Not only that, but to this date, TWC's sales rep's have never lied to me, or mis-informed me on what I would receive, which means a great deal to me in the matter of trust.

Bandwith is reserved for all 3 services!!!

When viewing HD the bandwith used is the one allocated for that signal, your internet has its own allocated bandwith and so does the phone. Do your research...
In addition, the numbers have not dropped, just ask the cable companies!!!
I'm not here because I need sales, I'm here to set the story straight on U-verse.
Thank you everyone and please don't hesitate to ask questions!!! Don't just go by what people say on blogs, go to your neighbors and friends. Ask them about their Uverse service, see for yourself how happy they are!!!!

Ivan is a cheese ball ATT salesman

Ivan is pretty cheesy using spam to solicit business on a consumer blog. We had the ATT sales guy stop by several times this week with the hard sell. I could see the commission in his eyes. I like the competition aspect but no sale.

how to deal with sales persons

We ( at our business) have started dealing with sales persons this way

( since they know where were are obviously)

before we will talk to them ( listen to their speil when they come in our business)

we ask for their ID ( drivers licsence) so far all of them have refused, and took off like the mafia was after them.

seems if they know where we can find them, they don't even bother with their petty scam and sales crapola

Fiber optic is nothing new!

What is "the fiber optic make things faster" part. U-verse has fiber optic only to the pole and not to the house. Cable companies have had this for almost 2 decades. Fiber optic is nothing new. True that U-verse has about 10 more HD channels than the cable companies but those "ten" are just repeat east coast, central, and west coast feeds of the same channel. Plus the percentage of actual HD content is pretty low on most of them. HD channels will be a big thing in the next year or so and I'm sure cable will blow U-verse away due to the lack of bandwith limitations like U-verse has. It is great to see competition but nothing seems "fantastic" in any way. Those things are yet to come.

It's really how we send our

It's really how we send our signal; Cable companies usually send all the channels at once and the receivers filter everything out, except for what you are watching (the youtube video is the perfect example of how cable companies will eventually have issues with trying to send everything through that little cable). Its true cable companies use fiber, unfortunately not all the way to the pole or node.
Our service sends you one channel at a time, no need to filter channels; fiber optic plays a big role in how fast the signal travels to your house. In fact our service node cannot be farther than 3000 feet from your house; which means that our signal travels 3000 feet max on our copper run. This is how we guarantee the quality of the service.
In regards to the bandwith limitations, there are really no limitations on our service; wait and in see what will happen in the near future with our so-called limitations!!!

The cable companies are

The cable companies are actually switching how they send the channels to your tv later this year. Only the channel you are watching will be sent to your tv. The new system is called "switch digital" and it will allow the high speed internet bandwith speeds to be increased dramatically. Channel line ups will also increase. It is a shame that AT&T didn't run their system with fiber optic all the way to the house like they had originally planned. The cost factor was much too high and they have already sunk plenty of money into the new U-verse system. The info on this is towards the end of this blog.

U-Verse HD quality

San Diego, Mission Hills install follow up:
The HD is working! Had 2 flat screen TVs side by side (780i 42inch plasma vs 37 inch 1080P LCD) and did a comparison. For the plasma sound, I connected the set top audio optical-out Toslink to my 5.1 AV receiver. The sound quality is great, but just like cable TV, there is still the problem of higher or "more dynamic" sound level differences between the various channels and during commercials. Manual volume adjustment is required to be used for the different channels to have a comfortable sound level. Testing the video, the HD quality is noticeably better than SD even on the 780i 42inch plasma. The plasma internal scaling could not correctly display the 1080i signal through the component cables. The display reduced the picture size inside of the screen and no adjustment on the plasma would render the the HD to be displayed full screen. On the VIP 1216 and 1200 the output of the box can be adjusted to 4:3 Standard, Widescreen, 720P and 1080i. I had to use the 4:3 standard definition for the plasma. The 37 inch 1080P LCD screen was connected using a HDMI cable (does sound and video) and had the same result of a smaller display size until I set LCD to 1080i input. After I did that and set the VIP 1200 output to 1080i, the picture filled the entire screen. My next quality concern was "macro blocking" or "pixilation" that I noticed with COX HD and their mpg2 compression scheme during rapid movment in programs. With the Motorola box and MPG4 compression, picture seemed to have an unnoticeable amount of pixilation in the background of sports programs like football and baseball, showing how good AT&T’s HD really is. The slight pixelation could just be the LCD's response time, would be interesting to compare a 1080P plasma TV with U-Verse digital signal. Anyways, was very impressed with the HD signal, switched back and forth on ESPN and ESPN HD. Noticeable video quality difference, sharper image, blacker blacks and deeper contrast, especialy on the HD LCD TV. For those who need and want the best, HD is the way to go. Myself, I’m pretty satisfied with the 780i 42inch plasma and U-Verse SD (standard definition). The 1080i LCD I got from Fry’s was returned after the comparison test was completed. For me I couldn't justify dumping my $2800.00 Panasonic plasma and purchasing a HD set along with extra monthly fees. One thing I noticed though was that the blue "HD" light on the DVR and other set top box does not go on with or without HD signal. Blue HD light only comes on when powering "booting" up the units. To confirm I had HD programing, had to punch in the 1000+ channel numbers to confirm that HD was working. The HD channels are free for the first month so now that I am done with the comparison, I will be going online to my AT&T U-Verse account and remove HD programing. Imagine, I can do it myself 24/7, online, and not have to argue with an account manager during bussiness hours to do it! That alone will keep me away from COX! Enjoy!

sounds like a good test.

sounds like a good test. just so you know, there are no programs on cable, u-verse or sattelite transmitted in 1080P so it's good you didn't try and test it. look it up on the web if you don't believe me. 780P and 1080i do just fine with todays technology.

Good Test

Yeah, I don't have a 1080P source (PS3 or blue-ray) In any event not all advertised 1080P devices can actually accept a 1080P signal!
Stephen

Good Test

Yeah, your right, couldn't test 1080P! I don't have an PS3 or Blue Ray player. In any event, not all tv sets can display a 1080P signal even though they advertise it!

Using a PC tuner

What does it take to run uverse through a PC. I want to use it on my media center PC but do I need to have a converter box for this or can I just run it directly into my PC?

Forgot to mention, no tuner is used

I forgot to mention that the U-Verse STP is a "Stream requestor" not a "Tuner" per se.
Cable and satelite broadcast all of their program content at the same time through the medium of coax cable and/or air. Their set-top boxes are like tuners because they focus on or "tune in" a specific channel and "tune out" the rest of the channels. With U-Verse there are no channels being received until they are specifically requested. The Motorola IPTV set-top box request a digital "stream" to be sent to it from the AT&T network via the gateway "modem". AT&T network will then send up to up to four "streams" or channels at a time to the Uverse gateway which is then distributed to the requesting set-top boxes and displayed. Connected to the AT&T network, The PC can't function as a tuner because there are no channels to tune into. The PC can't be the gateway/set-top box either, because of propreitary networking, compression scheme and content encryption.

cable companies have had

cable companies have had this technology for some time but have not started using it. expect to see it when they start rolling out more products like hd, international channels, etc. this technology is called "switch digital" and is merely a way providing more, with less (i.e. bandwith). u-verse has to utilize this technology due to its limited available bandwith.

cable companies have had this technology for some time

Just to be clear for all readers, this concept of requesting a stream (in reference to cable providers) applies to digital channels. At this point, at least for Time Warner San Diego, the analog channels are still carried "broadband", in a spectrum of frequencies that your cable-ready TV or VCR or digital recorder knows how to tunes. This is why most cable subscribers with NTSC (analog), cable-ready, TVs & VCRs do not have to buy set-tup converters when their local stations stop transmitting NTSC signals - the cable companies still send these and non-broadcast signals in this spectral manner, all using the NTSC format. This is bound to change someday but not right now.

U-Verse Use PC as setop box

I'm sure if you had the knowlege, genious IQ and the inside information about the IPTV technology, you could make a PC become your U-VERSE gateway to the house. You need to understand that the technology for this was not off the shelf. It has taken a long time to devlop a solution that performs at an acceptable level. The signal coming to the house is Ethernet style packets modified for IPTV and AT&T's network. You can "sniff" the signal with an analyzer and see what comes "out the pipe" Here is someone who has, see: http://www.nabble.com/Re:-Trying-to-use-irrecord-for-AT-T-u-verse-STB-p1.... These Ethernet packets contain compressed data. For sound Dolby Digital, AC3 and ACC. for Video encryption and compression, H.264 (Mpg4) , VC-1 and Mpg2, control information and macrovision copy protection for content. The VIP1216 set-top box uses Sigma Designs SMP8634 multiMedia processor see:http://www.sigmadesigns.com/public/Products/SMP8630/pdf_files/SMP8634_br.pdf
developed specifically for secure, DRM copy protected Audio/Video processing. Your PC is not designed for such a specific purpose of sound/video signal processing. Imagine your laptop managing the ABS brakes in your car! A 92% reliability of controlling the ABS brakes would hardly be acceptable! That's why a special processor was designed only to control ABS brake systems. I'm sure someone will find a way to "crack" into the signal packets and make a recorder or other device to capture the video. HD itself has various security measures built into it to prevent copying content, even the HDMI connection and sound/display devices have propritary security features! But why bother cracking it ? This quality of sound and video is delivered to your house for a few dollars a day. With competition heating up between cable, satalite and IPTV, the prices should be low for years! Hopefully I answered your questions. If anybody knows more about this please reply, help me out

hi! can the out put from set top box be recorded. if the tv use it will it work. att says no

Can Uverse be recorded?

I see no problems recording the video out of the STB through the composite RCA ,cable, or S-Video connectors on the back of the box by using a cheap video capture device. Make sure video capture device has some onboard hardware compression built into it like MPEG 2. Video and audio files are huge uncompressed, gigabits in size sometimes. You can use software such as Adobe Premere to capture and compress it as it enters your PC but this uses the computer's CPU requiring a more powerful PC. There are also options in Adobe premere to reduce the picture overall size or resolution to further shrink the output file size. With HD the problem of file size and CPU power is magnified even greater! Video Input to a capture device from HDMI, DVI or component usualy require capture devices in the $1000.00 plus range. MPEG4 compression on the fly (hardware chip) is required for these video sources. A PC can receive and process HD's amount of data say from a HD camcorder if you have a Dual core 3ghz+ processor and at least 2 gig of RAM, then compressing through software (not recomended). So far the best affordable capture device I could find for component input was hauppauge's HD PVR, article released today: http://www.zatznotfunny.com/2008-04/hauppauge-hd-pvr-specs-revealed/ . What's nice about this device is that it accepts the AC-3, Dolby Digital audio from the optical audio on the STB to create some real quality video shows. An older unit without AC-3/5.1 digital audio is ADS PYRO A/V Link Professional: http://reviews.cnet.com/tv-tuner-adapters/ads-pyro-a-v/4507-9332_7-31288... is another option. Remember, more quality = (more complexity + more cost) it all depends on what you want to do. There are lots of forums for this sort of stuff, just Google "HD PVR" and you should get some ideas. I was hot on recording high quality video and sound but the more I got into it, the more I was overwhelmed by the scope. This is a hard-core enthuziasts project for those who have the time and resources. Basicaly, I now do a torrent search to find videos or TV programs that I'm interested in. Someone else has done all the work for you!
Stephen

Can U-Verse HD be recorded? simple answer NO!

Can U-Verse HD be recorded? The only way you can currently record the HD output of the Motorola VIP 1200 and 1216 STB is via the 780P component cables and audio outputs. The HDMI ouput uses hardware and software DRM techniques to prevent recording of HD content, thereby protecting content rights. Even the video and sound devices connected participate in the DRM process as part of compliance to the 1.3 HDMI specification. The devices use a chip that provides HDCP functionality. HDCP stands for High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection. HDCP encrypts the digital signal to prevent it from being recorded. HDCP encryption / decryption takes place within your equipment. As far as I've heard, no one has found a cheap way to "crack" this yet.

UVerse Wireless Internet Incompatible with Windows ME?

Just had UVerse installed for cable and internet. As the tech was installing the internet he mentioned that our computer which runs Windows ME would not be compatible with the UVerse service. His suggestion was to go and buy a computer with either Windows XP or Vista. After calling ATT customer service they confirmed that they do not support computers running ME. Wish I had known this prior to installation.

ME support

I agree that there could have been posted a "PC Requirements" like any software has listed on the side of the box e.g. Pentium 4, 1.6 Ghz, 512mb memory or greater, Windows 98SE, 2000, XP, Vista, ect....... and a list of tested working wireless devices on their WEB site. That being said, Microsoft does not support 98 or ME anymore and made it known, read this offical Microsoft statement: "End of support for Windows 98 and Windows Me Effective July 11, 2006, Windows 98, Windows 98 Second Edition, and Windows Me (and their related components) will transition to a non-supported status. After this date, Microsoft will no longer provide any incident support options or security updates. Microsoft is not offering a custom support agreement for these products." This means there will be no patches or security updates made, leaving the security of your computer up to the end user to develop. This is an unsurmountable task for anybody really. Both 98 and ME are not designed to be connected to large networks and only basic functionality was provided by Microsoft. In any event, plugged into a high speed connection, your PC address will quickly be picked up by automated scripts and made available worldwide to hackers, spammers and other malicious attackers. The PC will slow down to a crawl and eventualy become unusable or dead. Even with my XP updated, patched and most recent security updates I still use third party protection such as Spybot Search and Destroy, ZoneAlarm Firewall, AVG free aditition, SUPERantiSpyware and CCleaner to keep my PC usable. They also have to be updated and some manualy run to keep the PC clean and working properly. It is unfortunate that all of this has to be done just to use a PC connected to the Internet! Sign of the times I guess, so you can see it is unreasonable to expect AT&T to support ME and 98. I'm sure Just supporting home networking and wireless will cost them millions of dollars a year!

Mission Hills First Customer is Connected! Install details

Here is a report on my experiences with the U-VERSE Installation into the house:
After my order was confirmed (read "U-VERSE San Diego" below Post) Received in the mail a welcome to U-Verse packet and pamplets about U-Verse, channel selections, operation and options. On Saturday the 26th of April, AT&T Tech called at 8:30 am to confirm appointment. He called again when he was on my street. I went outside to meet him and showed him the telephone pod that all of the house are to be wired to on my block. Inside is only plastic ropes from the house and a fat one to another AT&T box somewhere down the street. Tech then said he could run it from the pole. I asked “over the parallel wire?” He said no, he would request that a twisted pair drop would be run from the pole. My next question was how does that work, “Isn’t the wire at the pole also parallel wire?” He said that the main wire on the pole is already twisted pair and that the only factor is how far away the connected VRAD box is. Apparently the VRAD box was installed and connected to the existing phone wire system already in place in the neighborhood. So if you have a local VRAD box close to the house and the neighborhood phone system is connected, you should be able to get U-VERSE even if AT&T says that you can’t. Persistance should get you the service eventually. By 9:30 Am he started working on the install. The old wiring was removed, Satalite coax was first to go, then the antiquated phone wire. The Coax running to the bedroom was left intact. We decided to use it because it is relatively new and in good shape, also to not rip up the walls pulling the staples out. My house has lath and plaster so removing wall fastners makes messy holes quick! The in-house analog phone wiring and jacks were replaced and my regular phone worked perfectly. Cat 5 wire was run to the AT&T Residential Gateway (Modem) and turned on. We connected my separate Linux Firewall and could not get PC onto the internet. The default gateway does not allow other gateways, routers or other PC’s as gateways. This can be manually configured to allow those items and tech changed from the default to allow routers. After applying Gateway new settings, I was able to retain my firewall/Router and had access to the internet.Tech plugged his laptop into my network, did a few commands and handed laptop to me He asked me to create a username and password. After doing that He turned on the video DVR and the other set top box. Turning TVs on, a gear appeared on screen while some configuration files were being downloaded into the boxes. Took 18 minutes for the DVR and 22 minutes for the other box. All of the extra needed cables were supplied except for a 6 foot component cable. Apparently Tech has no video or sound cables longer than 3 feet, so if you need them have them handy before the install. Needed an HDMI and Toslink optical sound cable which he supplied at no charge. Tech Programmed the universal U-VERSE remote control to operate the TV’s and the VCR/VHS combo. Gave me a pamplet with device codes to set up AT&T remote for other devices. Next was an education on how to use the remote and how to record a program on the DVR. I ordered HD programming but the Tech did not have it in his order so there was nothing he could do, no HD. That has to be done from the backend so I called Stacy Dion at 858-349-3579 and she said she would add it tomorrow on Sunday morning. Still setting up everything, will follow up with HD quality and usage report on the 42” 780p plasma in SD verses the 37” 1080P in HD. Total time Tech was here was just over 3 hours, went pretty smooth actually. Will keep you posted.

Good Try Time Warner Sales Guy!!!

Below is a comment from a time Warner Sales Guy and he says this about AT&T U-Verse:

Many doors I go to have switched to the AT&T U-verse/DSL product to give it a try and are very eager to switch back to Time Warner Cable due to various reasons. These reasons include: long application/credit check process, 6-8 hour install appointment, constant return technical support issue appointments, billing issues, reduced internet speed, limited HD selection, weak customer support, etc., etc.

My sister didnt have a credit check! The installation was professional done and she is quite please with their service. AT&T U-verse/DSL??? Dont know anything about it being DSL-her's is Fiber Optic and LIGHTENING FAST!!! My sister said it's like she is sitting on the web. Her TV reception is amazing and her old TV picture looks like it is a new TV compared to the bad cable reception Time Warner gave it. She thought the TV was going out! She hasnt faced billing yet. But, "reduced internet speed". Where did he get that? From DSL? This is not AT&T DSL (no dish) it is FIBER OPTIC. She is not limited to HD selection (she hasnt picked HD yet-just getting reg reception-digital?). She has 200 channels (and I hear you can pick more). The only thing she had to give up with the Channel 4 sports channel which is owned by Time Warner. Does "she" care? NO!!
She hasnt needed customer support so no idea on a response. Good try--Time Warner Sales Guy!

haha

This guy is just ignorant makings statments on behalf of someone else, the cool thing is whenever someone starts talking for someone they are usually mistaken about certain information due to it being relayed improperly, besides the way this guy was talking you can tell hes a moron

Yes, CREDIT CHECK!

So how do you know her credit was not checked? I ordered U-Verse, and they did check my credit file. They said they would. I have monitoring, and I looked. I even had ATT wireline service for 30 years at the same address. No matter. The check was through Equifax...

first off, with cable if you have a 6mb internet connection, it will most likely be slower than a 6mb dsl connection because with cable, you are basicly sharing your internet with your neighbors. This is why most banks will use dsl not cable because dsl is more secure where as cable is not. So, all in all the top cable speed and the top dsl speed in actual real time use are just as fast as one anouther, and when everybody is on the internet watching youtube and stuff like that, dsl will be the same average speed, but with cable, you will notice a significant decrease in speed. just my 2 cents

With DSL you also share with neighbors

5 or 10 years ago, this was a valid argument. Cable networks were slower and grew quickly with too many users, but they have matured. Either way, the internet is a shared network. With DSL, your data and your neighbor's data travel side by side on the DSL provider's network and gets split off individually for the slower 2-wire run to your house. The DSL network can become over utilized just like any other. However, by limiting each user to lower limits, they rarely notice because they are not used to high speeds. On the other hand, users on cable networks are used to running at 10Mb/s or 20Mb/s with premium service. When things get busy and slow down to 4-6Mb/s, it really feels slow. It's all about perception.

Think of Cable as everyone with direct access to the big, fat pipe. Think of DSL as everyone with their own little pipe feeding into the big pipe. When the big pipe is full, everything slows down regardless. Still, DSL users never see any benefit from making the big pipe fatter, whereas cable users do.

ok, ok. congrats on the "no

ok, ok. congrats on the "no credit check". it may be possible without it but from what at&t reps have told me, it is required. call them and find out. also, check your info. if you read towards the end of this blog there is plenty of information regarding if u-verse is fiber-optic or not. you will read that it is fiber only to the node and not to the house. this is true also with cable service and has been the norm for many years. nothing new with fiber optic at all. if at&t did bring fiber to the house, that would be fantastic and the bandwith would be incredible but read about why they didn't do that below. the internet is dsl but is called "u-verse enabled dsl". just a fancy name for dsl. check the published speeds to confirm dsl from at&t is at a lower bandwith than cable high speed internet. all analog channels available through cable are also available as a digital channel (just enter "10" before the channel number). remember though that digital channels are only a compressed version of an analog channel allowing the provider to send you more channels using less bandwith. channel 4 padres is not owned by time warner cable. it is owned by cox cable and generously shared with time warner cable. just the facts!

Just ordered through Stacy

I live in North PB and just called Stacy and placed my order for the U-Verse Max Internet package. She told me it includes 10Mbps Down and 1.5Mbps up for $60/mo. Should be installed next week sometime so we'll see what happens. I'll reply with an update after I get a chance to use it.

Cheers,
Ben

New lower Time Warner rates!

Looks like Time Warner lowered it rates! They are now obviously trying to be competetive in the market. Cable w/free HD is now only $29.95/12 months (over 200 channels) and Road Runner High-speed internet (speeds up to 15 Mbps) is also only $29.95/12 months. Also includes free install! Thats about $35 less a month than AT&T's U-verse combo and it has faster internet and free HD. Not bad Time Warner! Looks like this competition thing is working out for all of us! I just ordered from a local rep and also got the DVR and Road Runner Turbo upgrade for free and the promotion extended for 24 months! I'm stoked!!!

My sister got her U-Verse installed today in Scripps Ranch

My sister got her U-Verse installed today in Scripps Ranch and she is thrilled. She said they thought their livingroom TV was going out. The picture was dim and weak and that they were going to need a new one soon (its not HD). After the U-Verse was installed she said her TV picture looks like a brand new TV. She said the signal must be awesome! One thing she did find out (extra fee) is she got the 1 DVR box and 2 regular set top boxes for two other TVS. Installation is free and the boxes are included at no extra charge. EXCEPT.... if you want to USE the HD-TV Box. Then you need to pay an additional $10 a month to get HD for that box. You get the box free, you dont have to rent it or anything. But you have to pay for the service to get HD (the package she got is $85 a month). Not sure of the goodies it includes. I heard they can only provide HD for one TV also but two may be able later. Then do you have to buy/rent another box for a second TV to have HD? And will it be $10 a month separately for that one to operate HD? Oh yeah, she said the Internet is lightening speed. I cant wait for Poway to get it at the end of this year!!

San Diego U-Verse Information source

Please call Stacy at (858) 349-3579 or email: SD1635@att.com . I am sure she can answer any questions that you may have about the products and harware options available. Funny how the Main AT&T number for information on U-Verse will not direct you to anyone who knows the details about U-Verse in your community. I started my search through AT&T and could only get local information by searching on Google. Found UCAN and it was infinately more granular with local info. Guess AT&T want's to keep Time Warner and COX in the dark about street by street U-Verse availability. Good for bussiness perhaps, but it seems to isolate the new customer!
Stephen

um, i'm sure they are not

um, i'm sure they are not hiding servicable areas for u-verse from the competition. it's a dead give away when they install the huge u-verse utility boxes out on the street for the u-verse service.

San Diego Mission Hills First U-verse Customer!!!!

Hooray!
All of the work I did to investigate U-VERSE availability through AT&T and the City of San Diego has paid off!
Today AT&T sent me an email declaring that I was an interested customer and that I could now order U-VERSE!!!
I was so happy I called Stacy Dion at (858) 349-3579 and email: SD1635@att.com to tell her the good news and to give the sales order to her. She returned my call in 10 minutes and arrived at my house 20 minutes later to explain the various packages available and also the equipment details. I signed up for the AT&T U-verse TV U400 package and the AT&T Yahoo! High Speed Internet U-verse enabled option ($25.00) The first month is free. I get 300 channels, 1 DVR box and 1 (can have 2) regular set top boxes for another TV. Installation is free and the boxes are included at no extra charge. After 30 days I can change the package online without even calling AT&T! Just have to login to my AT&T web account and make changes to the package! Try doing that with COX! I tried a COX HD programing promotion and did not like the quality or hidden extra monthly fees. Took 6 weeks and 20 hours on hold and speaking to everyone at COX before they would disconnect the HD and stop charging me! Very, Very poor service, more like the shaft! In any event I am scheduled for U-VERSE installation on April 26th. There still is no wire in the underground tube yet. It will be interesting to see what kind of bandwidth is possible through a polypropylene rope! Will keep everyone posted about the progress of my U-VERSE project. Stacy said I will be the first in my neighborhood to have the service! Her first customer here!

please keep us updated on your experience with Uverse

Hi Steve-o, please keep us updated and let us know how the installation of Uverse and quality of service works out for you... thanks for sharing your story!

Is U-verse really that bad?

I am interested in U-verse but called around and heard a few things that I would like to find if it is true or not. First I was told that U-verse has only one HD feed coming into the house. Apparently this means I can only watch HD programming on one TV at a time but my family has 4 HD tv's and won't be able to watch any HD shows when one of the others is already watching one. I guess this is due to the limited bandwith that U-verse has available for its service. Second, I heard that AT&T keeps raising their rates. I did notice the rate went up last month by about $10 but wasn't sure is it had gone up last year or not. Third, I was told that now, only the first U-verse TV box/equipment is free and the additional boxes will be at least $5 extra per month each. Can I use U-verse without a U-verse box and just plug the cable directly into my TV to get the standard channels for free just like my Time Warner Cable service does or do I have to pay for the extra equipment? Fourth, what is the maximum high speed internet speed I can get with U-verse. Right now I have Road Runner Turbo with 15/mbps down and 2/mbps up and I don't want to get any slower. Fifth, when will AT&T offer a bundle package that includes phone. My friend has U-verse plus AT&T phone but is billed seperatly and she says the rates for both are so high with all the extra fees, hidden charges and taxes. I was shocked to learn that the U-verse service and AT&T phone are actually two different entitities. I'm sure some type of bundled package would make the U-verse price more attractive. Please answer so I may make a decision. Thanks!

No damage here

I keep seeing these posts about damaged TV's.

I have the following configurations:
an old analog TV hooked up to one set top box over a regular video cable
a 3 year old LCD hooked to another set top over component video cables (YPbPr)
a four month old LCD hooked to the DVR over HDMI

I have had no video issues and have not heard of any from any of my neighbors. How were your TV's hooked up? Are you using surge supressors or UPS units?

Hello.. I am a sales mgr and can answer all your questions, I think you will be satisfied with the majority of the answers. You can now be billed on a single bill and we give you 3 digital boxes for free. Call or email me and I will explain everything in detail. 858-349-3579

THanks,

Please answer here.

Can you please answer my questions here on the forum so that we may all discuss these questions. If I must call you, it may seem that there is something to hide which would definitely make me a bit uncomfortable. I could always call AT&T directly with my questions but would possibly not get the correct answers. It does seem a bit strange that you are here on a forum selling your product. I am happy to know that everything can be on one bill now but do you have unlimited calling packages nationally and international and what are the rates. Also I plan on getting U-verse next month. Will the 3 boxes still be free? Please post your response to the questions here. Thanks!
