Mother Nature 1, Big Business 0: I love the smell of Sea Life in the morning!

California water officials recently ruled in favor of sea life over the three power plants throughout San Diego County. The power plants are subject to an overhaul, from closing plants to building new cooling towers.

Last week, the State Water Resources Control Board ruled to phase out cooling systems for seaside power plants because the process kills more than 2.6 million fish and 19 billion fish larvae each year. Energy companies will fight the new policy in favor of sea life because of the costs of complying with the law. Poor energy companies, right? Wrong! Poor fish!

The new guidelines make California a national leader in efforts to stop using the "once-through" cooling system. Ocean experts consider the controversial cooling system a great threat to coastal marine life. Environmentalists support California's new laws designed to meet the federal Clean Water Act even though there are valid concerns that loopholes might allow some energy companies to operate without substantial improvements for years past compliance deadlines.
