2006: An Energy Odyssey
2006 has proven to be one of the most memorable in UCAN’s history. We made great strides this year, while enduring perhaps the worst energy year since the infamous 2000-2001 electricity “crisis.”
This was the year that gasoline prices hit an unheard of high, reaching $3.44 a gallon on May 11, while consumer confidence hit all-time lows. SDG&E filed three huge rate cases, each one costing in excess of $1 billion. If approved, each one of these projects will drive up your electric bills. Meanwhile, natural gas prices were more volatile than Russell Crowe at a paparazzi convention.
At the same time, the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC), was hijacked by the phone industry. The Schwarzenegger Commission reversed the prior Davis-appointed PUC crackdowns on phone company abuses. Meanwhile, California voters rejected Prop. 87, the initiative that promised some meaningful relief from the vise-like grip that Big Oil has on California pump prices.
Yet, what could have been a discouraging year turned into big one for UCAN’s members … and for the organization itself. UCAN is celebrating seven major court and regulatory victories that promise big rate refunds and improved customer service.
